00:01 - 00:02
Hello, everybody.
00:03 - 00:03
Happy Earth Day Week.
00:04 - 00:08
A special little science lesson for a week, I'm gonna
00:08 - 00:09
talk a little bit about recycling.
00:11 - 00:12
So what is recycling?
00:13 - 00:16
Recycling is a way to take trash and turn into
00:16 - 00:16
new products.
00:17 - 00:21
There are a number of different recycling process is that
00:21 - 00:23
allow materials to be used more than once.
00:26 - 00:27
So what can be recycled?
00:28 - 00:30
Um, all sorts of materials, especially those in this picture
00:31 - 00:31
right here.
00:32 - 00:36
Um, some of the most common processes in use today
00:37 - 00:42
involve recycling plastic glass, metals, paper, electron ICS in textiles.
00:44 - 00:48
Typically used items made of these materials include soda cans,
00:49 - 00:54
plastic milk cartons, newspapers, old computers and cardboard boxes.
00:59 - 01:01
It's a little bit more on what can be recycled.
01:02 - 01:06
Um, so depending on what town you live in, you'll
01:06 - 01:08
have a different sort of recycling service.
01:08 - 01:11
So here where I live in Tinley Park, we use
01:11 - 01:13
Homewood disposal service.
01:14 - 01:18
Um, so in this slide is just like a couple
01:18 - 01:21
of things that are accepted recycling items.
01:21 - 01:23
And then we're gonna talk about some things that may
01:23 - 01:28
surprise you that you're not allowed to psych some things
01:29 - 01:33
that our love our aluminum, tin or metal cans, plastic
01:33 - 01:34
vials or containers.
01:35 - 01:40
Glass bottles or jars, cartons and clean milk, juice, broth,
01:41 - 01:43
soup and other file holders.
01:44 - 01:45
Junk mail.
01:45 - 01:52
Um, plant in cardboard boxes, um, paperboard boxes and newspapers,
01:53 - 01:56
catalogs, phone books and paper bags.
01:57 - 01:59
So some things that may surprise you.
01:59 - 02:01
There's actually a long list of things that are not
02:02 - 02:03
accepted for recycling.
02:04 - 02:06
So any time you try recycling, we used these or
02:06 - 02:08
end up just gonna be thrown away in the landfill.
02:08 - 02:15
Sometimes, Uh, those include plastic bags, um, greasy pizza boxes.
02:16 - 02:19
Okay, so if you have a pizza box and it
02:19 - 02:21
has grease in it, you're gonna want to cut out
02:21 - 02:24
the areas with the grease in the pizza fax and
02:25 - 02:27
throw away the greasy part, and you can put the
02:28 - 02:29
rest of it in the recycling bin.
02:30 - 02:33
Um, some other things, including electronics and TV ads.
02:34 - 02:37
You actually have to go to a specialized location and
02:37 - 02:42
drop off your old TVs and electronics recycling service's are
02:42 - 02:47
gonna actually do that other own, um, another thing that
02:47 - 02:50
I found super interesting waas batteries.
02:51 - 02:55
Once again, batteries is taken to a special location for
02:55 - 02:57
them to be reused and repurpose.
02:58 - 03:03
Um, there was one other thing that a lot of
03:03 - 03:06
people actually do try to do is diapers.
03:07 - 03:10
So dirty diapers, For obvious reasons, they're not allowed to
03:11 - 03:11
be recycled it all.
03:12 - 03:13
So, guys, just keep that in mind.
03:14 - 03:16
When you're recycling, you're gonna want to take the stuff
03:17 - 03:21
that actually accepted items for your company, then coming it
03:22 - 03:22
picks up for yourself.
03:23 - 03:25
And make sure you put that in there.
03:25 - 03:27
Do not use a plastic bag for your items.
03:31 - 03:33
All right, So how does recycling work?
03:38 - 03:39
The video doesn't work.
03:39 - 03:41
I have to link that to you guys, Which is
03:41 - 03:42
okay. Yeah.
03:43 - 03:45
We're gonna move out of an excellent because my video
03:45 - 03:47
visit work s.
03:48 - 03:49
So how are certain items?
03:50 - 03:55
Recycled recycling is actually complicated process and is different for
03:55 - 03:56
each type of material.
03:57 - 04:00
So aluminum cans were one of the first items to
04:01 - 04:01
be heavily recycled.
04:02 - 04:05
The process isn't quite as complicated as it is for
04:05 - 04:07
other items on the cancer.
04:08 - 04:12
Usually first of shredded and melted from their aluminum.
04:13 - 04:16
Could be used to make new cans and other aluminum
04:17 - 04:20
items. So there are a lot of types of plastics
04:21 - 04:23
and each type come from different combination of chemicals.
04:24 - 04:28
As a result, plastic bottles are first sorted into their
04:29 - 04:30
various chemical types.
04:31 - 04:35
They're cleaned to get rid of any leftover food or
04:35 - 04:35
other ways.
04:36 - 04:40
Next, the bottles are crushed and shredded into fine plastic
04:40 - 04:41
cups chips.
04:42 - 04:46
Thes chips must be melted down to create new plastic
04:47 - 04:51
or turn it into fiver used for making carpets or
04:51 - 04:55
clothing. Uh, paper, on the other hand, starts its recycling
04:56 - 04:59
process by being mixed with water and other chemicals that
04:59 - 04:59
break it down.
05:01 - 05:03
It then gets shredded and heated up.
05:04 - 05:07
This process eventually turns the paper into a pole or
05:08 - 05:13
slurry. Ah, the poll is strained in order room.
05:13 - 05:15
Any clues or plastics?
05:16 - 05:18
After that, it gets cleaned and bleached to remove any
05:19 - 05:20
leftover inks or dies.
05:21 - 05:22
Now the pope is ready.
05:22 - 05:24
May be made into a new paper.
05:25 - 05:28
So fun fact about paper paper could be actually be
05:28 - 05:29
recycled seven times.
05:30 - 05:34
Okay, After that seven time, the fibers and the paper
05:35 - 05:35
actually unable.
05:37 - 05:40
Um, so the next we have the computer and banners.
05:41 - 05:43
Computers and batteries are usually recycled in order to remove
05:43 - 05:47
harmful chemicals as to recover sale, but some of the
05:47 - 05:51
valuable materials, such as gold from the electron IC boards.
05:51 - 05:54
But like I said, you can't just, um, take out
05:55 - 05:58
your old computer on garbage day, right?
05:58 - 06:01
And put that in your recycling thing because you have
06:01 - 06:03
to take that to a special location to be able
06:04 - 06:05
to recycle your electronics.
06:06 - 06:06
I know.
06:06 - 06:09
In Tinley Park, we have a certain location right over
06:09 - 06:12
by the police station where people are trapped off their
06:12 - 06:20
old electronic goods, so benefits of recycle their many benefits
06:21 - 06:21
from cycle.
06:22 - 06:27
Um, these include recycling materials, means less trash and save
06:27 - 06:29
space and dumps and landfills.
06:30 - 06:31
Um, also helps.
06:32 - 06:35
A resource is when we use materials again, this means
06:35 - 06:38
we take fewer Resource is from the earth, and you
06:38 - 06:42
know that the resources we're getting from the earth are
06:42 - 06:42
gonna last forever.
06:43 - 06:47
Right? So we need to keep reusing, are needed resources
06:49 - 06:49
in pollution.
06:50 - 06:56
In general, recycling materials can proves less pollution, which helps
06:56 - 06:57
keep our environment.
07:01 - 07:02
So what can you do?
07:03 - 07:06
S. So just be sure, recycle everything you can in
07:06 - 07:07
your home in school.
07:08 - 07:11
Uh, there's almost always a recycled trash can route.
07:11 - 07:13
I'll be sure to drop here.
07:13 - 07:15
Use aluminum cans and plastic bottles in there.
07:16 - 07:20
I'm al B Sure put paper items like newspaper cereal
07:20 - 07:25
boxes and homer pages after the tournament.
07:26 - 07:29
Be sure after the tournament, okay, napping for right so
07:30 - 07:31
into the recycling bin.
07:35 - 07:38
So just some fun facts that end this Plastics are
07:38 - 07:42
usually marked with an identification code that indicates the recycling
07:42 - 07:46
symbol, Um, and a number from 1 to 7.
07:47 - 07:52
Ah, this indicates the type of chemicals or polymer used
07:53 - 07:53
to make plastic.
07:54 - 07:56
Because there's not just one type of plastic I know
07:56 - 07:57
you can only see my eyes Right now.
07:58 - 08:00
There's a, uh, not just one type of plastic Easy
08:01 - 08:05
excuse different materials when creating plastic.
08:05 - 08:09
So the numbers one through seven, right one through seven
08:10 - 08:14
actually indicate what type of materials were used.
08:14 - 08:19
So then they're ableto actually sort all the plastic materials
08:20 - 08:22
and actually be able to reuse them, which is pretty
08:22 - 08:28
cool. Um, like I said earlier, and use paper can
08:28 - 08:29
be recycled around seven times.
08:30 - 08:32
After this, the fibers get too short and are filtered
08:33 - 08:34
out by the recycling process.
08:35 - 08:37
That's so waste materials.
08:38 - 08:43
Eyes turned into a lecture, uh, electricity energy by burning
08:44 - 08:49
it. Modern incinerators, basically things that bird stuff right on
08:49 - 08:50
the last thing glasses.
08:50 - 08:54
One of the most recycled materials are best recycling materials.
08:55 - 08:59
Um, clear glass can be recycled over and over again.
09:01 - 09:04
All right, that pretty much wraps up on recycling 101
09:05 - 09:07
Please go to the next line and answer the next
09:07 - 09:08
couple questions.
09:08 - 09:10
I hope you guys have a great week seal.
