00:01 - 00:02
Welcome to
00:02 - 00:04
Nu One secondary today.
00:04 - 00:06
I'll be telling you about the history and
00:06 - 00:08
my personal experience at Saint Paul's Cathedral.
00:12 - 00:16
Saint Paul's Cathedral is located within the central city of London
00:16 - 00:21
and sits atop Ludgate Hill. A Roman temple to Diana may once have stood on the site.
00:22 - 00:26
But the first Christian cathedral there was dedicated to Saint Paul in 80 60 oh four.
00:27 - 00:28
During the rule of King
00:28 - 00:28
Appelt,
00:29 - 00:30
the first
00:30 - 00:32
that cathedral burned and its replacement,
00:32 - 00:38
which was built in 6 75 to 6 85 was destroyed by Vikings in 9 62 ad
00:39 - 00:43
in 10 87 a third cathedral erected on the site also burned.
00:43 - 00:47
Saint Paul's is the fourth and longest standing cathedral built on the site
00:47 - 00:51
in the 16 sixties. An architect by the name of Christopher Ryn
00:51 - 00:54
was enlisted to survey and repaired the cathedral
00:54 - 00:56
which had been severely damaged by Cromwellian core
00:57 - 01:00
troops who had used it as a barracks during the English civil War.
01:01 - 01:02
But unfortunately,
01:02 - 01:08
it was destroyed in the great fire of London in 16 66 before work could begin
01:09 - 01:12
ren subsequently designed and oversaw the construction at the
01:12 - 01:15
present cathedral which was built mainly at Portland stone.
01:16 - 01:21
His plans were approved in 16 75 and work was carried out until 17 10.
01:21 - 01:22
However,
01:22 - 01:24
during the latter half of his work
01:24 - 01:26
ren made some unapproved decorative changes to the
01:26 - 01:31
interior of the cathedral in an attempt to bring it in line with Victorian styles
01:32 - 01:37
in the 19 for in 1941 during the battle of Britain civil defense brigades protected
01:37 - 01:41
the structure from fire although it was hit directly by bombs at one point,
01:41 - 01:45
an unexploded bomb was removed at great risk from the nave.
01:45 - 01:49
Repairs were carried out, the repairs were carried out following the war.
01:50 - 01:53
Many architects who build cathedrals like Saint Paul's
01:53 - 01:55
usually did not live to see the end
01:55 - 01:58
of their work due to the long amount of time it took to build them.
01:58 - 02:01
So it was a great surprise to many that re lived
02:01 - 02:04
to see Saint Paul's finished by his son in 17 10,
02:05 - 02:08
Ren built the stunning cathedral in only 35 years.
02:08 - 02:11
A very impressive accomplishment for his time.
02:11 - 02:15
All in all it is clear to see that Saint Paul's has been through some tough times.
02:15 - 02:17
And when that's considered,
02:17 - 02:20
it really is amazing that it's still standing today.
02:22 - 02:25
Saint Paul's Cathedral boasts one of the largest domes in
02:25 - 02:29
the world which towers at an impressive 366 ft high.
02:30 - 02:33
The famous whispering galley lies at the base of the dome and it is
02:33 - 02:37
said that even the quietest whisper can be heard clearly through the dome.
02:38 - 02:45
But the only way to get to the top of the dome is to climb a total of 528 steps.
02:46 - 02:49
Here is a picture of me and my brother Cohen going on the staircase.
02:50 - 02:52
It was amazing to realize how high the cathedral
02:52 - 02:55
really is and to see the stunning view of the
02:55 - 02:55
London
02:56 - 02:57
City against the sky.
02:58 - 03:00
After marveling at the view cannon.
03:00 - 03:04
My sister Haven and my dad waited in line to climb to the very top,
03:04 - 03:06
which was about 10 ft higher.
03:06 - 03:10
While me, Cohen and my mom headed back down the staircase,
03:10 - 03:13
we were still very winded from climbing so many stairs.
03:14 - 03:17
When the three of us were about halfway down,
03:17 - 03:20
the fire alarm went off and was telling everyone to evacuate the building.
03:20 - 03:22
But thankfully there was no fire.
03:23 - 03:26
So that was an interesting first experience in this cathedral,
03:26 - 03:28
but overall an amazing one.
03:30 - 03:32
And that's all for Saint Paul's Cathedral.
03:33 - 03:35
Thank you for being such an amazing teacher, Miss East.
03:36 - 03:38
I really enjoy getting to be in your class this year.
03:39 - 03:40
Thank you for watching.
