00:01 - 00:05
Hi, Veranda were seniors at Carrington College Dental Hygiene Program.
00:05 - 00:08
And today we're gonna be giving your presentation on how
00:08 - 00:10
to better care for the elderly.
00:10 - 00:11
I'm Ryan.
00:12 - 00:13
I'm Amanda, and I'm cassava.
00:14 - 00:18
And I'm Kylie here.
00:18 - 00:21
Just a few things that we have learned throughout the
00:21 - 00:22
course of our dental hygiene program.
00:32 - 00:35
Okay, so what you wanna do is wrap this around
00:35 - 00:41
your middle fingers so you can have better stability and
00:41 - 00:42
go in between.
00:42 - 00:46
Make sure you go as deep as you can all
00:46 - 00:48
the way to the base of that little pocket and
00:49 - 00:51
then go up and down multiple times just to make
00:52 - 00:53
sure you get the bacteria out of that.
00:59 - 01:01
This picture shows great how you're supposed to do it.
01:02 - 01:04
So follow that when you cross your teeth.
01:08 - 01:11
This one shows the C shape motion you're supposed to
01:11 - 01:12
use when flossing.
01:13 - 01:14
Um, all of your teeth.
01:18 - 01:20
The best technique to use when brushing your teeth is
01:20 - 01:23
called the modified bass technique, and that is going to
01:23 - 01:26
be demonstrated by me doing this.
01:26 - 01:29
So when you brush, make sure you're you angle your
01:30 - 01:33
toothbrush down towards your gums and and do a little
01:33 - 01:34
circle motion.
01:34 - 01:36
So you can get all the bacteria from underneath your
01:36 - 01:39
guns and pull it up and make sure you and
01:40 - 01:42
your little strokes with a swipe.
01:45 - 01:48
When you are brushing, make sure you brush for two
01:49 - 01:52
minutes and use a soft toothbrush because hard toothbrushes, they're
01:52 - 01:53
just gonna wear away your gums.
01:56 - 02:00
So a lot of the elderly population has limited dexterity,
02:01 - 02:04
so it's a really, really hard for them to grab
02:05 - 02:08
a toothbrush that is just a regular size, so you
02:08 - 02:11
can add different things to help him with that, you
02:11 - 02:13
can add things like a tennis ball for them.
02:13 - 02:17
Thio easily gripped the tennis ball and be ableto brush
02:17 - 02:22
properly. There's other AIDS for flossing, like a floss holder
02:22 - 02:25
that you just wrap the floss around, which helps them
02:26 - 02:28
get into those back areas of their teeth.
02:29 - 02:32
Eso that they conf lost instead of just using a
02:33 - 02:38
regular flaw CE holder, which might be harder for them
02:38 - 02:38
toe hold.
02:42 - 02:46
Another option, instead of just a regular toothbrush, is get
02:46 - 02:47
a toothbrush that has a little bit of a wider
02:48 - 02:51
base for them to be able to grab onto and
02:51 - 02:52
brush better.
02:54 - 02:57
So for the residents that have dentures, it's really important
02:58 - 02:59
to take them out every single night.
03:00 - 03:02
And when they're out of the residents mouth to make
03:03 - 03:05
sure that that they're in water and soaking in a
03:05 - 03:09
cleaner, um, especially overnight if they'll let you do that
03:10 - 03:12
on dhe in the mornings, it's important.
03:12 - 03:17
Thio, get your denture brush and brush those dentures which
03:17 - 03:20
will help get the cleaner in tow the grooves of
03:21 - 03:23
the dentures to make sure that there's no remaining bacteria
03:24 - 03:24
in it.
03:27 - 03:29
So I'm gonna go over a few of the problems
03:29 - 03:32
that can occur if you're not properly carrying, Um, for
03:33 - 03:35
those residents or even in your own mouth, these air,
03:35 - 03:37
some issues that can come up.
03:39 - 03:41
So on the right here is a picture of dentures,
03:42 - 03:44
Um, source, like Kylie was talking about.
03:44 - 03:46
You need to be taking those out every night and
03:46 - 03:48
brushing them because these could be super painful for the
03:48 - 03:51
residents and just cause a lot of discomfort.
03:52 - 03:54
Um, on the left is just a picture of fungal
03:55 - 03:58
infections. Thes can occur as well if you're not properly
03:58 - 04:00
brushing as well as brushing the tongue, which is important,
04:01 - 04:05
and you kind of get that discoloration in the middle,
04:05 - 04:07
you have zero Estonia, which is just what we refer
04:08 - 04:08
to as dry mouth.
04:09 - 04:11
This is way more common in the elderly population.
04:12 - 04:16
Um, just then regular adults and you can see in
04:16 - 04:19
this right hand side how red and irritated the tongue
04:20 - 04:22
is, and it gets very painful for them as well.
04:28 - 04:30
Next, I'm gonna kinda go over some common areas for
04:30 - 04:30
oral cancer.
04:32 - 04:34
So since you guys are looking in their mouth and
04:35 - 04:36
you are the ones helping them, you kind of have
04:36 - 04:40
an advantage of helping them see any of these, um,
04:40 - 04:42
effects that can be going on.
04:42 - 04:44
So on the side of the tongue is a very
04:45 - 04:46
common place for them to be.
04:46 - 04:48
You can see how big this kids, but how it
04:48 - 04:50
could be hiding under the tongue if it's not lifted
04:51 - 04:55
and looked at as well as the palette of the
04:55 - 04:58
mouth. You can kind of see how this is getting.
04:59 - 05:02
Um, kind of a discoloration to it as well as
05:02 - 05:05
kind of filling up with fluid just does not look
05:05 - 05:08
great. So both of these areas air really important to
05:08 - 05:12
check out when helping them with their aural help at
05:12 - 05:13
night or in the morning.
05:15 - 05:18
Another important thing that we have to offer is just
05:18 - 05:22
Thio is to help others realized that their mouth is
05:23 - 05:25
a mirror for what's going on systemically within their body.
05:26 - 05:30
Um, there are links between period on Titus, um, to
05:30 - 05:31
cardiovascular diseases.
05:32 - 05:34
You're also more prone to have a stroke if you
05:34 - 05:36
are someone who has period on Titus.
05:37 - 05:40
Also, the mouth mirrors other systemic conditions that you can
05:40 - 05:44
recognize that your patient, for example, for example, poor tissue
05:44 - 05:47
healing is an example of diabetes possibly being present.
05:48 - 05:51
Um, there's a lot of things that the mouth shows
05:51 - 05:53
that that are going on to the rest of the
05:54 - 05:57
body. Also, period on Titus is what we call the
05:59 - 06:02
tissues as they are being inflamed and the bone is
06:04 - 06:04
wearing down.
06:05 - 06:06
So that's what we refer to when we say period
06:06 - 06:07
on Titus.
06:08 - 06:10
So it is really important to take a look at
06:10 - 06:12
your president's bounds and understand that what's going on there
06:12 - 06:14
can be a reflection of what's going on with the
06:14 - 06:15
rest of the body.
06:16 - 06:19
Each of the residents will be getting a bag with
06:19 - 06:23
a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, so you have the proper
06:23 - 06:26
tools to keep the residents or a health happy.
06:28 - 06:30
And then we also have a survey for you on
06:30 - 06:32
Surveymonkey. It should appear in your emails and we would
06:33 - 06:34
really appreciate it if you guys took it for us.
06:35 - 06:35
Helps out with our class.
06:36 - 06:37
So if you could do that, that would be great.
06:38 - 06:41
And thank you all so much for me.
