When faced with the choice of choosing two options between Cost, Schedule and Quality, many people choose...four? Watch this short video to find out what other options must be considered during the new product introduction phase and what is the most important thing to consider when launching a new hardware product.
Audio TranscriptAuto-generated 00:01 - 00:02 welcome back to two minutes to launch. 00:02 - 00:04 My name is Terry, and today I'll be talking about 00:04 - 00:05 the manufacturing triangle. 00:06 - 00:08 And the question I'm gonna answer today is how do 00:08 - 00:11 you choose between cost, schedule and quality when you can 00:12 - 00:12 only pick, too? 00:13 - 00:14 Let's jump right into the variables. 00:14 - 00:17 I'm gonna start with costs because everyone starts with cost 00:18 - 00:18 and almost everyone chooses. 00:19 - 00:21 Cost is one of their top one or two items 00:21 - 00:24 here in this selection, it's the easiest thing to compare 00:24 - 00:25 and measure. 00:25 - 00:27 And if you're selling hardware, it's really what the whole 00:27 - 00:29 business model is built off of. 00:29 - 00:31 So you've gotta have a great understanding and handle on 00:31 - 00:31 your products. 00:32 - 00:36 Cost. The second variable is schedule, and it's the second 00:36 - 00:38 easiest thing to measure next to cost. 00:38 - 00:41 And there's almost always a an event, a trade show, 00:41 - 00:42 a Christmas selling season. 00:43 - 00:46 There is always some date or event driving that schedule 00:46 - 00:47 that you just got a hit. 00:48 - 00:51 So cost and schedule Oh, we've already picked to. 00:51 - 00:52 That should be the end of discussion, right? 00:53 - 00:55 Well, what about quality Now? 00:56 - 00:58 Quality turns out, is really just a given from any 00:58 - 01:01 customer that selects and manufacturing partner. 01:01 - 01:03 They really expect them to build and ship a quality 01:04 - 01:06 product. Yes, they've already chosen cost and schedule. 01:07 - 01:08 But quality is a given. 01:09 - 01:11 Um, so now where does that leave us? 01:11 - 01:14 We're balancing all three of these variables nobody really ever 01:14 - 01:14 picks to. 01:15 - 01:17 Even though the old saying is so common. 01:18 - 01:21 And turns out, customers also like to order off menu 01:21 - 01:23 and add another item, which is flexibility. 01:24 - 01:27 And when I'm talking about flexibility throughout any product development 01:27 - 01:30 process, some changes there going to be required, almost no 01:30 - 01:32 product ends up the way it started out. 01:33 - 01:36 So when you're making these choices between competing priorities, it's 01:37 - 01:39 really important that you understand that timing and the impact 01:40 - 01:42 of these changes earlier in the process is easier to 01:42 - 01:44 absorb in implement changes, then later in the process. 01:45 - 01:49 And when I say flexibility, it's things like maybe you 01:49 - 01:52 can reduce your product cost, but you're gonna have to 01:52 - 01:53 push your launch date back a little bit. 01:54 - 01:57 Or you can make really huge improvements in quality, but 01:57 - 01:59 you're gonna have to absorb a little bit of a 01:59 - 01:59 cost at her. 01:59 - 02:04 So now we're balancing cost, schedule, quality and flexibility throughout 02:04 - 02:07 a product development process, and if you asked me what 02:08 - 02:09 is the most important thing to consider? 02:10 - 02:12 I'm actually gonna go off menu as well. 02:12 - 02:16 And I'm gonna say communication communication while you're making all 02:16 - 02:19 these agile changes is really key to keep all stakeholders 02:19 - 02:23 aligned and make sure that everybody very clearly understands the 02:23 - 02:27 impact of this agile decision making on cost, schedule and 02:27 - 02:30 quality. That's been two minutes to launch for today. 02:30 - 02:32 Thanks again for watching please like and share this post 02:33 - 02:33 and follow. 02:33 - 02:35 See cop here on linked in See you next time.
