00:02 - 00:06
Hi, I'm going to talk about ALS scanning at M
00:07 - 00:12
and G in particularly our high density scanning and what
00:12 - 00:14
we're doing as far as accuracy in measuring how accurate
00:15 - 00:16
we can get with this new technology.
00:17 - 00:23
Um So just as an overview, uh against the four
00:24 - 00:27
VQ 4 80 II scanner, which is one of the
00:27 - 00:28
newer ones from regal.
00:28 - 00:35
Um mhm go into.
00:35 - 00:37
So we mounted into assessing the plane.
00:37 - 00:40
So it's a very expensive scanner which costs a lot
00:40 - 00:41
more than the plane.
00:41 - 00:45
So it's an expensive scanner in a relatively cheap plane,
00:46 - 00:49
which makes it very efficient, efficient way of getting a
00:49 - 00:50
lot of points.
00:51 - 00:51
Very economic.
00:52 - 00:55
We use a high resolution camera with it, 100 megapixel
00:56 - 00:58
hassle. Glad that uses very good high density photos.
01:01 - 01:04
Um So let's look first at the density we get
01:05 - 01:06
so a few points first.
01:07 - 01:10
If we compare it to mls mls is much more
01:10 - 01:16
dense. Uh you will get 700 m uh per square
01:17 - 01:18
meter in the middle lane.
01:18 - 01:21
This is for an older scanner compared to you go
01:21 - 01:24
one lane across and you only get 377 points.
01:24 - 01:25
So it drops off quite a lot.
01:26 - 01:33
Then you go Another even 10 m away Over on
01:33 - 01:35
the other side and you're down 22 points.
01:35 - 01:37
So it drops off very fast with the mobile, it's
01:38 - 01:40
much more dense, but the density because of the height
01:40 - 01:44
of the scanner is much much less even.
01:45 - 01:50
So the beauty first up of the ALS is where
01:50 - 01:52
55 points per meter squared in the center.
01:53 - 01:55
That's for one pass, there were only 45 on the
01:55 - 01:59
edge. So it drops off slightly but not as much
02:00 - 02:02
and then you can increase the density with more pastors
02:02 - 02:03
and other things.
02:04 - 02:05
So that's intensity.
02:06 - 02:09
Um, now the first thing we look at is the
02:09 - 02:12
noise of the scanner, The precision, so to speak.
02:13 - 02:14
So the density is very good.
02:15 - 02:17
What we do is we take a circle of a
02:17 - 02:21
plane in the scan and we analyzed the data in
02:21 - 02:26
that little circle and you say, uh just from an
02:26 - 02:28
older scanners, you can see that the pattern you get
02:28 - 02:32
is similar to Mls but the first thing we know
02:32 - 02:36
is the accuracy or the precision isn't as good in
02:36 - 02:39
that it's plus or minus 15 mil fitting to the
02:39 - 02:43
plane of that circle where the mls, Australian red hair
02:44 - 02:45
is plus or minus only a few millimeters.
02:46 - 02:50
So clearly there's a degradation and that makes sense due
02:51 - 02:54
to the, The drop off you have in the coming
02:54 - 02:57
from 1000 ft away rather than coming from, you know,
02:57 - 02:58
10 m.
02:59 - 03:02
So for a high density scanner, this sort of one
03:03 - 03:05
m circle looks like the number of points going across
03:05 - 03:11
it. And that's the thing applying to that little piece
03:11 - 03:11
of road.
03:12 - 03:13
That's the noise.
03:13 - 03:16
So you expect the plane's gonna be only the road
03:16 - 03:18
is going to be flat within a couple of millimeters.
03:19 - 03:23
But we're still getting plus minus 15 million points compare
03:23 - 03:26
that. But the beautiful thing is because it is a
03:26 - 03:29
plane, you can average those points and just a moving
03:30 - 03:32
average, you can bring the actually down quite easily.
03:33 - 03:36
So precision can be improved when you average it over
03:36 - 03:36
a flat plane.
03:37 - 03:37
So that's one thing to know.
03:40 - 03:43
Um Here's another one, the same data.
03:44 - 03:46
If you look at across the road, you can see
03:46 - 03:49
it graphically that the mls in green is very flat,
03:50 - 03:53
where the average of the red is about the same.
03:53 - 03:55
If you took, an average of both of them are
03:55 - 03:59
very similar within a couple of millimeters, but the spread
04:00 - 04:00
of the red is much bigger.
04:03 - 04:08
So uh again, you can see it easily in the
04:08 - 04:11
mLS data versus the ALS dollar.
04:12 - 04:16
So how does that work when we look at accuracy?
04:17 - 04:21
If the noise from the mls is to mills versus
04:22 - 04:22
a L S seven mil.
04:23 - 04:26
But the accuracy total of the system is not nothing
04:27 - 04:28
to do with the precision.
04:28 - 04:30
It's to do with the GPS and multi path and
04:30 - 04:31
other things.
04:31 - 04:36
That's a 15 male for uh uncorrected or unpinned data.
04:37 - 04:39
And so the total accuracy of the system through propagation
04:40 - 04:42
of variances is not much different.
04:43 - 04:45
6, 16 Mil vs 50 male.
04:46 - 04:49
Even though the as we've said, the ALS is less
04:49 - 04:50
accurate or less precise.
04:53 - 04:55
Um Now if we the way that they correct mLS
04:56 - 04:59
data is by tapping into control every 200 m even.
05:00 - 05:02
And you can bring the accuracy down of the mls
05:03 - 05:04
25 million height.
05:05 - 05:07
Uh Once email by doing that.
05:08 - 05:10
So when you propagate the variances of the five mil
05:10 - 05:14
accuracy with the different decisions, the mls will still become
05:14 - 05:18
more accurate, but not as much so in a three
05:18 - 05:23
sigma case, uh the mls is sub two centimeters where
05:23 - 05:28
the sub three centimeters, so that's directly what we get.
05:29 - 05:31
But also if we take a disc on the road
05:32 - 05:37
and average them out first, we get the same precision
05:38 - 05:38
as the mLS.
05:39 - 05:41
So naturally as you expect, we get the same accuracy.
05:42 - 05:45
We can measure the accuracy of a disk to the
05:45 - 05:47
same level as a mls accuracy.
05:49 - 05:49
So that's just so theoretical.
05:50 - 05:52
Uh And so the point is, can we prove it?
05:53 - 05:55
That's where we looked at with some testing.
05:56 - 05:59
So the first test is in what we in the
05:59 - 06:03
freeway here in Perth, it's 10 km of a row
06:03 - 06:04
of the main freeway.
06:05 - 06:09
Any north, we do six passes of mls and we
06:09 - 06:13
do three passes of ALs, you can see the it's
06:14 - 06:18
a nice straight road with the mls we take, because
06:18 - 06:21
we're running down the road from the trajectory, we take
06:21 - 06:26
a point every meter and we can get uh use
06:26 - 06:28
that as a test point to compare between each survey
06:29 - 06:29
only for height.
06:32 - 06:37
Now, here's the results from mls, you can see the
06:37 - 06:38
six passes.
06:38 - 06:40
Uh they go out a little bit.
06:40 - 06:42
This one obviously got some multi path error in it,
06:42 - 06:45
but most of them stick together pretty well near the
06:45 - 06:48
end, we've got some spread as well up to three
06:48 - 06:51
or four centimeters and that's typical of what we've always
06:51 - 06:52
seen with less.
06:52 - 06:54
And that's part of the job of picking to control
06:54 - 06:56
or averaging, bring your Mls points out together.
06:58 - 07:00
Now the ALS is very similar.
07:01 - 07:03
It's just you can see the precision from coming from
07:04 - 07:08
300 m in the air is less precise, but you
07:08 - 07:09
get the same accuracy.
07:09 - 07:12
So it shows when the data than what we're saying
07:12 - 07:14
that the accuracy is about the same, but the precision
07:15 - 07:16
is bigger with the girls.
07:18 - 07:20
Uh here's to on the same graph.
07:21 - 07:23
Uh and you can see the average around about the
07:23 - 07:28
same point and that's just showing them that averaged once
07:28 - 07:29
you pin them all together with a L.
07:29 - 07:31
S, pin them together with L.
07:31 - 07:32
S. M.
07:32 - 07:32
L. S.
07:32 - 07:36
Uh You get similar results in the accuracy.
07:38 - 07:41
So statistically the numbers show that for each of the
07:42 - 07:46
less passes when compared to the mls mean, uh we're
07:46 - 07:52
getting About five mil in stand deviation over those points.
07:53 - 07:55
So there's thousands of points when we get through the
07:55 - 07:56
sand aviation of five mil.
07:57 - 08:01
And this is for an average rectangle of 27 points.
08:01 - 08:04
So it's half a meter wide over a meter long
08:04 - 08:05
for each one of these points.
08:06 - 08:08
Uh So it sort of proves what we were saying
08:09 - 08:09
in theory.
08:09 - 08:12
Uh This little test down the freeway, we think we
08:13 - 08:13
can get five more.
08:14 - 08:17
Uh, We can measure an area, a flat patch on
08:17 - 08:19
the road and get five million accuracy, one sigma.
08:22 - 08:25
Um, And if you take any one point we can
08:25 - 08:28
get uh, plus and minus or better than 30 mil.
08:30 - 08:31
Oh, that's racing.
08:33 - 08:34
That's the Mitchell freeway test.
08:35 - 08:36
Another test we did was Kings Park.
08:37 - 08:38
This is like a big area.
08:38 - 08:40
It's one of the main parks in Perth.
08:40 - 08:43
Um, yeah, if you come to birth, it's one of
08:43 - 08:44
the nicest places to say.
08:45 - 08:49
Uh, It's mostly trees with a few roads going around
08:50 - 08:54
it. So, uh, in those, we've got 11 control points
08:54 - 08:58
we want to pin to, we have 23 verification points
08:58 - 08:58
are independent.
08:59 - 09:00
You can see them there roughly.
09:02 - 09:05
Uh, each control point, just the way it happens is
09:06 - 09:06
a quite point.
09:06 - 09:10
So it's four separate points on the road, but they're
09:10 - 09:11
so close, we treat them as one.
09:13 - 09:17
So here are the graph of all the residuals at
09:17 - 09:19
each point after being pinned at those 11 points.
09:21 - 09:23
Uh, it should be noted that the MLS is compromised
09:24 - 09:24
all the trees.
09:25 - 09:27
So the analyst never came up that well, but the
09:27 - 09:28
control points well done traditionally.
09:31 - 09:35
Mm Yeah.
09:36 - 09:44
And yeah, so the, the answer was, we got five
09:45 - 09:48
mil, uh, this way too, so that it did prove
09:48 - 09:49
the results of the other test.
09:51 - 09:55
Um, so in general, uh, That's the results.
09:56 - 09:59
We can get five million one singer or, Or some
09:59 - 10:00
30 mil for an individual point.
10:01 - 10:04
Yeah. Uh some of the problems obviously we've gone through
10:04 - 10:07
the noises biggest, that's why one point is less accurate.
10:08 - 10:12
Um the circle, the beans themselves because of coming from
10:12 - 10:13
such a height.
10:13 - 10:16
Uh the footprint of the beam when hits the ground
10:16 - 10:16
is bigger.
10:16 - 10:20
It's about 12 centimeters wide when it hits the, the
10:20 - 10:20
bitch man.
10:21 - 10:24
So picking up curbs and small features, it's not going
10:25 - 10:26
to be ever as good as mLS coming from 10
10:27 - 10:27
years away.
10:28 - 10:32
The other big draw card or disappointment, it's not very
10:33 - 10:33
good on the bridges.
10:35 - 10:38
So that's the main difference.
10:38 - 10:42
Um another thing to look at is horizontal control.
10:42 - 10:45
If you want to pin a point cloud together horizontally.
10:46 - 10:48
Uh it's not quite as easy to do.
10:48 - 10:51
Even with this level of density, you can certainly see
10:51 - 10:54
features but to actually match them and be better if
10:54 - 10:57
the computer does by drawing off lots of lines between,
10:58 - 11:02
let's say I am an mLS point cloud and the
11:02 - 11:05
china always pointed out so the computer can do it.
11:06 - 11:07
That's more work to be done there.
11:08 - 11:14
Finally, another years we've found for this stuff is if
11:15 - 11:17
you want to do is to a large area, you
11:17 - 11:19
need a lot of verification points.
11:19 - 11:23
One we looked at doing is with VLS, which is
11:23 - 11:25
just dynamic TLS, we have a L S scanner on
11:25 - 11:28
top of the vehicle and as we stop, we do
11:28 - 11:31
a scan of the area and you can pin it
11:31 - 11:34
using gps over that five minutes of the scan.
11:35 - 11:39
And so you get and you're getting um RTK or
11:39 - 11:42
slightly better than RTK accuracies with the five minutes can.
11:43 - 11:46
Yes but it's enough to verify the sub three cm
11:47 - 11:48
single points of an al.
11:48 - 11:52
Scan. Uh Little thing we found is because the this
11:52 - 11:53
is the A.
11:53 - 11:53
L. S.
11:53 - 11:54
M. L.
11:54 - 11:57
S. And the BLS points together and you can see
11:57 - 11:59
they all track together pretty well.
11:59 - 12:02
And that's that's because we're the other areas would be
12:02 - 12:04
g opioids and control errors.
12:07 - 12:10
Mhm. Ah So there's a workflow to use that so
12:11 - 12:12
we can do it fairly big area with a less
12:12 - 12:17
fairly um Some three cm fairly efficiently.
12:18 - 12:20
Mhm. So I'll leave it there.
12:20 - 12:22
Um That's what we've learned today.
12:23 - 12:27
Uh Ls in summary the LS is more accurate than
12:27 - 12:31
we thought it was and when used correctly it can
12:31 - 12:36
be done Sub three cm or even sub two cm
12:36 - 12:38
and used for checks if you're taking discs on the
12:38 - 12:41
road. Uh Thank you.
12:41 - 12:43
Hope you got to make from it
