00:01 - 00:05
In this video, we're gonna look at something called situation
00:06 - 00:12
Thought and consequence and in your book, crucial conversations on
00:12 - 00:15
page 108 There's a situation between Luis and Maria, and
00:16 - 00:20
this really connects with the situation thought consequence model that
00:20 - 00:23
Nelson Jones layout within their their book.
00:24 - 00:25
And so we're gonna look at this together.
00:26 - 00:29
And so situation thought consequence.
00:29 - 00:32
When I'm working with clients and I'm describing this technique,
00:32 - 00:34
what I tell them is it's kind of like our
00:34 - 00:37
thoughts are this machine on dso.
00:37 - 00:40
The situation occurs, and so here's the situation and then
00:40 - 00:40
our thought.
00:41 - 00:44
Then it goes to this machine where our thoughts begin
00:44 - 00:46
to into abroad with it, and then out comes something
00:47 - 00:47
else, right?
00:48 - 00:51
And so what happens is, within this machine, there's not
00:51 - 00:54
really machine, but within this machine that I talk about
00:54 - 00:56
it like it takes the situation.
00:56 - 00:59
I was like, uh on and throws out a thought
01:00 - 01:01
that then contribute to a consequence.
01:02 - 01:04
So, for example, you binge earning with a 29 year
01:04 - 01:05
old mother of two.
01:05 - 01:07
She recently saw you at the grocery store, and you
01:07 - 01:08
did not notice her.
01:09 - 01:11
Her thought was I'm not important to you really matter
01:11 - 01:13
when it's a specific time that we meet, no one
01:14 - 01:15
really cares about me.
01:15 - 01:15
And so then the consequences.
01:16 - 01:18
She feels hopeless alone, rejected.
01:19 - 01:21
She's called to inform that she's canceling her next appointment
01:21 - 01:21
with you.
01:22 - 01:25
The situation does not bring about the consequence.
01:26 - 01:29
It's actually the thought that then influences the consequence.
01:30 - 01:32
There's lots of situations that we go through where, if
01:33 - 01:35
we have a different thought process or we approach it
01:35 - 01:38
differently, the consequence of the outcome is going to change.
01:39 - 01:42
And so situation thought consequence is a good thing to
01:42 - 01:45
kind of work with for ourselves or for those returning
01:45 - 01:46
with and asking them.
01:46 - 01:49
Okay, this is the situation, and this is the thought.
01:50 - 01:51
Is there any other potential thought?
01:52 - 01:55
Are there three other potentials for thoughts that we could
01:55 - 01:58
go to and then using those as something to kind
01:58 - 01:59
of build off of?
01:59 - 02:02
And so again, it's the situation, then goes into this
02:03 - 02:07
thought machine where whatever goes on within our mind interact
02:08 - 02:11
with that situation and bam out comes this consequence, our
02:11 - 02:14
outcomes, this response that will then have consequences, whether or
02:14 - 02:18
not um, that's really what happened, and the consequences don't
02:18 - 02:21
have to be negative if the situation was the same
02:21 - 02:23
one and her thought was that she didn't notice, you
02:23 - 02:25
know? Well, they didn't notice me.
02:25 - 02:27
Then the consequence would be that she may be said
02:28 - 02:28
to you.
02:28 - 02:30
When I was at the gross story the other day,
02:30 - 02:31
you didn't notice me, and I waved.
02:32 - 02:33
But anyways, you were really busy.
02:33 - 02:35
And I thought I would just reach out and let
02:35 - 02:37
you know that I'm excited for our next appointment, whatever,
02:37 - 02:38
it would be right.
02:38 - 02:42
And so, just knowing that there's this situation and there's
02:42 - 02:42
an outcome.
02:43 - 02:45
But the thought in the middle is going to impact
02:46 - 02:48
what that outcome is and so keep that in mind,
02:48 - 02:49
is your journey with others.
02:50 - 02:51
This is one from a teenage perspective.
02:52 - 02:54
So the situation is going to a party, and the
02:54 - 02:56
thought is actually I'm the thought is that it's going
02:56 - 02:58
to give me a sense of community, of fitting in
02:58 - 02:59
of longing for connection.
03:00 - 03:02
It's a kind of a teen ritual going to a
03:02 - 03:07
party, and so the consequence there's various possibilities, and so
03:07 - 03:10
we want to help them process the consequences, right?
03:10 - 03:11
The thought is I'm gonna fit in.
03:12 - 03:12
I'm gonna be cool.
03:12 - 03:14
I'm gonna be like, whatever it would be, whatever that
03:14 - 03:15
thought is underneath it.
03:16 - 03:17
And the questions that we can use to help people
03:18 - 03:18
help teenagers.
03:19 - 03:21
Either process that already outcome that's happened.
03:22 - 03:24
Or the one that there going towards us.
03:24 - 03:26
What were you hoping to gain or what?
03:26 - 03:28
Are you hoping thio experience from this?
03:28 - 03:31
What do you think would happen if or after you,
03:31 - 03:34
Right? And so if sometimes when we're working with teenagers,
03:34 - 03:37
they do some crazy things because their teenage mind is
03:38 - 03:40
rolling and it is a fully working gas pedal.
03:40 - 03:43
But the brakes have yet to be installed, right?
03:43 - 03:46
And so we have these consequences that air coming up
03:47 - 03:47
in that they're processing.
03:48 - 03:50
And so asking them, you know what has happened since
03:51 - 03:53
that you did not forsee your You wouldn't want to
03:53 - 03:56
repeat. What was your plan If Blank happened, right?
03:56 - 03:59
These questions come from Jeremy and Jerusha Clark and their
04:00 - 04:00
book your teenagers.
04:00 - 04:03
Not crazy, but again engaging with these questions.
04:03 - 04:08
Let the teenager then contemplate what the consequence could be
04:08 - 04:10
connected to the thought and the situation.
04:11 - 04:13
If you're going to a party and you're wanting to
04:13 - 04:15
fit in and then you do something that you probably
04:15 - 04:17
wouldn't have done if you felt really secure in yourself.
04:18 - 04:20
You know what we're hoping to gain?
04:20 - 04:22
While I was hoping to gain friends, I was hoping
04:22 - 04:22
to gain popularity.
04:23 - 04:24
Or I was, you know, what did you think would
04:25 - 04:27
happen if you had done that?
04:27 - 04:28
Well, I just thought that it would be no big
04:28 - 04:31
deal because other people did, or after you all.
04:31 - 04:33
I just thought that it would just go away and
04:33 - 04:35
it wouldn't matter anymore And what's happened since?
04:35 - 04:37
Well, now my teachers found out, and now I'm in
04:37 - 04:40
trouble at school, and I didn't want that to happen.
04:40 - 04:42
And how people think that this is like who I
04:42 - 04:43
am all the time right?
04:43 - 04:46
And so giving them spaces to process the thoughts that
04:47 - 04:49
happen in those situations that then influence the consequence.
04:50 - 04:54
And so that's the situation thought, consequence kind of model
04:55 - 04:58
or layout that helps us just kind of process with
04:58 - 05:00
people in journey with people and even process her own
05:01 - 05:03
thoughts and consequences to the situations that we've had.
05:03 - 05:05
So I hope this has been helpful, and if you
05:05 - 05:07
have any questions about that, feel free to reach out.
05:07 - 05:08
Thanks, but
