Hello everyone.
00:01 - 00:04
My poster was focused on motivational strategies for positive academic
00:05 - 00:06
achievement involving black boys.
00:07 - 00:10
And my research question was what motivational strategies attribute to
00:11 - 00:14
positive academic achievement when dealing with success or failure in
00:14 - 00:16
the classroom, especially with black boys.
00:17 - 00:20
My data and results show that self pride and your
00:21 - 00:24
ability and your ability to know that you're capable of
00:24 - 00:26
doing any goal that you put your mind to.
00:27 - 00:28
It has a lot to do with how you deal
00:29 - 00:29
with success or failure.
00:30 - 00:33
For example, if you get 100% on a test and
00:33 - 00:35
you do really well on it, then you know that
00:36 - 00:39
your ability to do that math is very um it's
00:39 - 00:41
very high and that you would never question your ability
00:41 - 00:41
to do math.
00:42 - 00:44
But if you get a 40% on that test and
00:44 - 00:47
you don't do so well then you know that uh
00:47 - 00:50
your effort and how many hours you put into that
00:50 - 00:53
math test was not so well and often times when
00:53 - 00:56
you have low self esteem and your pride isn't very
00:56 - 00:59
high, then you start to attribute your success of getting
01:00 - 01:03
100% to, oh the test was to was too easy
01:04 - 01:07
or I got lucky that time instead of knowing that
01:07 - 01:09
your ability is always there and you can should never
01:09 - 01:12
question your ability to do anything in life.
01:13 - 01:15
When you get that 40% of the test, then you
01:16 - 01:18
attribute that to your ability and say Oh I never
01:18 - 01:19
was good at math.
01:19 - 01:23
Anyways again, the most important part of this is that
01:23 - 01:25
I know that your ability is always there.
01:25 - 01:28
Uh My methodology in my research was reading a book
01:28 - 01:32
by dr Kawanza who is an educational consultant and his
01:32 - 01:36
book focused primarily on peer pressure for black boys and
01:36 - 01:38
overcoming for better academic achievement.
01:38 - 01:42
I also search for articles that focused on schools using
01:42 - 01:43
strategies to incorporate itself.
01:44 - 01:50
Pride improvement, inclination of academic resources and increased guidance.
01:51 - 01:54
The data and the results um shown from my research,
01:55 - 01:58
I found one case I was outside of school in
01:59 - 02:02
the Bronx that had an emphasis, had an emphasis of
02:03 - 02:07
self pride and using codes and values to go by
02:07 - 02:10
throughout the whole year, which helped them be able to
02:10 - 02:13
go through the All the tasks that they do during
02:14 - 02:16
school and showed a great result.
02:17 - 02:21
At the end of 85% of the students graduating, compared
02:22 - 02:26
to the 24% of students graduating surrounding the troubled neighborhoods.
02:26 - 02:29
And I think this is a great comparison of rates
02:30 - 02:32
from using this emphasis of self pride.
02:33 - 02:35
Um In conclusion, I think that we need more inclusion
02:36 - 02:39
inclusion, we need more inclusion in the classroom and should
02:39 - 02:42
be put into action and focus on teachers, creating relationships
02:43 - 02:45
with the students and it would be paramount and the
02:45 - 02:47
motivation to do work and to come to class.
02:48 - 02:50
Um, in addition to this, I think that we need
02:50 - 02:53
to focus on academic improvement with extra days to come
02:53 - 02:56
to the classroom and as a result of a significant
02:56 - 02:59
improve. As a result, there will be a significant improvement
03:00 - 03:02
of literacy and math school scores and the increase in
03:03 - 03:06
black teachers can also attribute to the crucial aspect of
03:06 - 03:07
relationship building with students.
03:08 - 03:10
Thank you all for listening and it was a pleasure
03:11 - 03:11
presented to you all.
