  2. stage is Chapter five.
  3. Toby appeared in layers as I walked up the steeply
  4. first, his hat ahead.
  5. Then more and more of him down to his boots.
  6. As I reached the flat ground at the top of
  7. the lane, he was a scarecrow, but for the guns
  8. on his back and his arms hanging loose at his
  9. sides. If he saw me coming, he made no sign
  10. of it.
  11. Toby never came to meet a person.
  12. Hey, Toby, I said.
  13. Mother sent me with a little supper.
  14. I didn't know what I would say until I did.
  15. We had too much for just us.
  16. Toby Space in the shadow of his hat broom was
  17. as quiet and mild as an old dogs.
  18. I noticed the camera hanging from his neck.
  19. Do you have any film descendant?
  20. We mailed it for him when he did.
  21. It gave the film to my Aunt Lily's that she
  22. was the postmistress.
  23. I went into the office every week.
  24. Death on.
  25. I usually carried around the prince when they came back,
  26. until Toby and I crossed paths we had never once
  27. opened to the package, though I was sometimes tempted when
  28. Toby wanted us to see what he had done.
  29. Good offer.
  30. One time he showed me a batch that featured a
  31. red tailed fall with a rabbit in its beak.
  32. Ahh. Thunder had glazed with evening like a Deere napping
  33. in a patch of my apples.
  34. I had never known anyone quiet enough to approach a
  35. sleeping dear.
  36. Nor had I known any hungry man who would shoot
  37. one with a camera instead of a gun.
  38. He took a little school out of his pocket and
  39. handed it to me.
  40. I gave him the bundle of food.
  41. Do you still have some film?
  42. He nodded.
  43. Every time the photographs came back to us.
  44. There were two fresh holes in the package.
  45. Kodak keeping its word.
  46. You shifted the guns on his back a little.
  47. Didn't turn to leave right away, as he usually did.
  48. I waited.
  49. He reached into his pocket.
  50. This is yours, he said, handing me a penny.
  51. It was warm when I took it.
  52. Have you called Betty searching through the I V along
  53. the trail of school.
  54. Toby must have been watching from the trees.
  55. I put the penny in my own pocket.
  56. Toby waited some more and an almost hopeful with if
  57. he knew it was my penny than he had seen,
  58. but he hit me.
  59. Perhaps he had heard her threats, but he had not
  60. intervened. If he was waiting for me to tell him
  61. about it, toe ask for his help.
  62. I couldn't.
  63. I just wasn't sure how I felt about all that.
  64. With the last little nod, Toby turned and walked away,
  65. his guns and boots, making their simple music how he's
  66. still that was able to surprise me.
  67. Sorry, happy.
  68. Still been at will was beyond May.
  69. I had never yet been able to surprise so much
  70. as a milk cow, let alone Joe.
  71. I stayed for a bit and watch to make his
  72. way back across the turned ground between the strawberry patch
  73. and the woods, dipping and rising a little as he
  74. walked against the grain of the furrows, like a boat
  75. crossing a small C.
  76. On my way back down the lane, I paused at
  77. the sight of my house in the growing darkness, lit
  78. from within, and wondered if Toby ever stood Where I
  79. did, I saw what I saw fingering the penny in
  80. my pocket.
  81. I thought that perhaps he did.
  82. I found my father sitting on the back step.
  83. He always seemed to be there when I returned from
  84. taking Toby some supper on how it was Toby tonight?
  85. He asked as he followed me into the house.
  86. Same as ever.
  87. I said, Quiet.
  88. I do like that about him, my father said.
  89. But you should tell me if you ever worries you,
  90. Annabelle, which startled me like how I said my father's
  91. truck. Anything at all.
  92. Like if he seems sacrifice hurt.
  93. You mean he answered by putting his hand on the
  94. top of my head and smiling Little Go on under
  95. your homework now, he said.
  96. But first I went in search of my Aunt Lily,
  97. who would send in the film that Toby had given
  98. me. Neither of us knowing that on that small school,
  99. another piece of trouble was waiting for someone to find
  100. it. Has I got ready for bed that night I
  101. examined my aching hip and the bruise that Betty had
  102. given me.
  103. It looked like a red cucumber, not yet going black,
  104. sort of the touch, and I made up my mind
  105. right then that she would not have Aunt Lily sweater
  106. frog. And it wasn't possible that even a girl like
  107. that he would hurt my brothers for me, beyond a
  108. bruise shaped like a cucumber, that sort of thing didn't
  109. happen. And knowing that Toby might be nearby gave me
  110. some reassurance.
  111. I was certain that he wouldn't let anything happen that
  112. happened to me or my brothers if he was nearby
  113. at the time, if he saw it happening and if
  114. I did get another bruise in the bargain, I would
  115. tell my mother she would know what to do.
  116. When my brothers ran off ahead of me the next
  117. morning, I ran to and kept him close to me
  118. and me close to them up the lane and down
  119. the other side of the hill across the fields towards
  120. Wolf Hollow.
  121. More than once, they stopped to look at me, and
  122. at one point Henry said, You're fast for a girl.
  123. And another time James told me to slow down and
  124. get over near him, and I didn't upload part of
  125. this. I apologize.
  126. We're just gonna keep going.
  127. Which is why I didn't tell you yesterday said.
  128. But let's go quietly and maybe we'll see him again.
  129. So is that the tree?
  130. So it was.
  131. The three of us were together on the path, and
  132. Betty stopped, stepped out from behind a tree.
  133. The boys stopped so suddenly that I bumped into them.
  134. Hey, Betty, Henry said.
  135. James just stood still.
  136. I cut around in front of the boys and continue
  137. down the path.
  138. Come on, my side or we'll be late for school.
  139. I didn't look back.
  140. The boys follow close by.
  141. At the first turn of the path, I ushered them
  142. the head and off they ran.
  143. And so did I, all the way down the hill
  144. and into the schoolhouse.
  145. I don't like that, Betty, James said, is we unbuttoned
  146. our jackets and hung up our caps.
  147. She's spooky.
  148. She's just a dumb girl and recess.
  149. But he kept his voice down and looked over his
  150. shoulder when he said it that he arrived in, but
  151. she paid us no attention at all.
  152. She focused instead on her desk in It's at one
  153. of the biggest boys Andy would bear.
  154. I liked the name would bury, but I didn't like
  155. Andy. Nobody did not even the other big boys, though
  156. they did whatever he told them to Dio.
  157. And he had not been in school since before Betty
  158. joined us.
  159. He and his father and uncle's work side by side
  160. farms not too far from ours.
  161. Dairy cows, mostly the corn, too, And hey and potatoes
  162. the kitchen garden.
  163. Enough use for wool and Sunday dinner lamb in the
  164. spring, chicken, some goats pretty much what you'd expect at
  165. a dairy end of October.
  166. And he came to school from time to time, mostly
  167. for a change of scenery, although I don't know why
  168. he paid no attention to his lessons or to Mrs
  169. Taylor. You're in my seat that he said to him,
  170. even sitting down, he was nearly as tall as she
  171. was standing, but she didn't seem the least bit nervous.
  172. The other Children had gone quiet, watching Mrs Taylor writing
  173. a lesson on the chalkboard, hadn't yet noticed.
  174. And he looks Betty up and down.
  175. Who are you?
  176. He said, Bettie Glen.
  177. Gary, Who were you?
  178. Andy would bury?
  179. She considered him his hands on her hips, her hands
  180. on her hips.
  181. Do you live in the woods no.
  182. Are you a berry?
  183. No. He sat up straight on his chair.
  184. Do you live in a Glen?
  185. As a matter of fact, I do, she said, which
  186. gave him pause.
  187. And are you?
  188. Ah ah, at which even Andy seemed to understand that
  189. there was no good way to finish this, that he
  190. was already smiling.
  191. A Gary.
  192. No, I am not a Gary unless that Gary is
  193. a girl who means to sit at that seat you're
  194. in by now.
  195. And he looked so baffled that I concluded no girl
  196. had ever spoken to him this way, not even his
  197. mom. If anyone had asked me, I'd have said that
  198. that he would have, at least at the very least,
  199. have birds in her hair by the end of recess.
  200. But I would have been wrong without another word.
  201. And he stood up and waited while Betty took her
  202. seat, any stud looming over Benjamin, the small boy in
  203. the decks next to hers, until Ben been gathered up
  204. his things with a sigh and shoved in next to
  205. someone else, and he sat down and stretched out his
  206. legs. His pant cuff and boot laces bristled with stick
  207. tights. When Mrs Taylor turned from the chalkboard and saw
  208. him sitting there, her shoulders went up and down slowly
  209. and she slumped a little.
  210. Good morning, Mr Woodberry, she said.
  211. Have you brought your books with?
  212. You don't need books, he said, tapping his head.
  213. Got it all up here I was sitting behind Betty,
  214. but when she turned toward Andy, I could see that
  215. she was smiling.
  216. He can share with me, Mrs Taylor, that he said,
  217. I don't mind.
  218. Well, that's very nice of you, said Mrs Taylor.
  219. It sure is.
  220. And he said, From the way Betty was looking at
  221. Andy, I thought maybe she'd be inclined to pay less
  222. attention to me From now on.
  223. The rest of the morning went pretty well.
  224. Although Andy fell asleep at one point and during the
  225. lessons and punctuated his lessons with his story, Betty to
  226. Wake him laid a hand on his bare arm when
  227. he woke and he gave himself a shape, yawns loudly
  228. and crossed his arms.
  229. Like a Lord, he was not a bad looking boy
  230. and was cleaner than some, but Betty was the first
  231. girl to take to him.
  232. I wondered about that how quickly an attraction had sprung
  233. up between them.
  234. But I had seen such a thing before when a
  235. new dog showed up on the farm.
  236. Sometimes there was a fight before anyone knew the reason
  237. why sometimes quite the reverse.
