00:01 - 00:02
Hi six graders.
00:02 - 00:05
Today you're going to work in Unit 25 which explores
00:06 - 00:07
the Latin roots of Gen.
00:08 - 00:10
Mort and Bio.
00:12 - 00:15
You're learning targets for today are I can use my
00:15 - 00:18
knowledge of Latin roots to read new words accurately.
00:19 - 00:22
And I can use my knowledge of Latin roots to
00:22 - 00:24
understand the meaning of new words.
00:24 - 00:29
And you're really working on morphology, which transitions you from
00:29 - 00:31
not just being able to read the word but really
00:31 - 00:33
starting to understand that meaning so that second learning target
00:34 - 00:34
is really important.
00:35 - 00:39
As we move on to our learning today, Latin roots
00:40 - 00:41
are word parts that have their own meaning.
00:42 - 00:46
Most cannot stand by themselves, and they could be at
00:46 - 00:48
the beginning, middle or end of the word.
00:48 - 00:50
And you'll see that in your work this week that
00:50 - 00:53
they could be in any spot of the word examples.
00:53 - 00:55
Air Crone High, Bo Doc.
00:59 - 01:03
This week's Latin roots are Jen, which means birth or
01:03 - 01:10
family Mort, which means death and bio, which means life
01:12 - 01:15
so you can see that these three routes jen more
01:15 - 01:20
bio. All have to do with the life cycle, from
01:20 - 01:24
life to death and to birth, and the family that
01:24 - 01:29
happens in between those moments of birth and death.
01:33 - 01:36
So let's look at a few words that use thes
01:36 - 01:37
Latin roots.
01:39 - 01:43
Here we have GEN in generation people are born and
01:44 - 01:47
living during the same time period are in a generation
01:49 - 01:53
so usually a generation covers around 30 years or so
01:53 - 01:55
but it's just a cluster of time.
01:55 - 01:58
So you and all your sixth grade friends will go
01:58 - 02:01
through life in the same generation because you're the same
02:01 - 02:04
group of people that were born during roughly the same
02:04 - 02:05
period of time.
02:07 - 02:08
The next Latin root that we're gonna focus on this
02:09 - 02:09
week is Mort.
02:11 - 02:12
Now more, it means death.
02:12 - 02:16
So when we look at the word mortality, mortality is
02:16 - 02:18
the state of one day having to die.
02:19 - 02:24
So a plant has mortality because it will grow and
02:24 - 02:26
thrive for a while but eventually will die.
02:27 - 02:30
People are the same way were born and we live.
02:30 - 02:32
And then one day everyone will die.
02:34 - 02:40
Bio is our last Latin root bio means life, and
02:40 - 02:41
this one is really common.
02:42 - 02:45
You'll see it a lot in science content, but biology
02:47 - 02:50
is the study of life because we have ology, which
02:50 - 02:52
means this study and we a bio, which means life.
02:53 - 02:56
So we put those two roots together and they don't
02:57 - 02:57
stand on their own.
02:58 - 03:00
But when we put them together, we suddenly understand that
03:01 - 03:04
biology is the study of life, and we have meeting
03:04 - 03:04
with that word.
03:10 - 03:11
Let's practice a few.
03:13 - 03:14
This word is progeny.
03:15 - 03:19
When I look at progeny, I see crow at the
03:19 - 03:23
beginning and Jeannie at the end, and we have the
03:24 - 03:26
word, the route Jen, this part of Jeannie.
03:27 - 03:31
So I know that pro means forward or fourth, and
03:32 - 03:34
I know that Jan means birth, their family and this
03:34 - 03:36
word gonna talk about it has offspring.
03:38 - 03:40
So when someone gives birth to a child, it's their
03:41 - 03:45
offspring. Or when an animal gives birth to say a
03:45 - 03:48
dog gives birth to a puppy, it's the dog's offspring.
03:49 - 03:54
So a progeny is the descendant or offspring of a
03:54 - 03:55
person from their family.
03:56 - 03:58
So progeny is this word.
04:00 - 04:04
We used our knowledge of prefixes, suffixes and routes to
04:04 - 04:06
help us find the meaning in the word progeny.
04:08 - 04:10
And we're gonna do with this again in a word
04:10 - 04:11
that you can practice with below.
04:12 - 04:14
So your word is auto biography.
04:16 - 04:17
Take a moment and look at autobiography.
04:19 - 04:21
How maney roots Do you see an autobiography?
04:29 - 04:30
There are three Routes.
04:30 - 04:34
An autobiography we see Bio in the middle, which is
04:34 - 04:39
one of our focal roots this week, and we also
04:39 - 04:42
see auto in front of it and graph e after
04:43 - 04:47
it. So when we think about what auto means, bio
04:48 - 04:51
means and graphene means we can come up with a
04:51 - 04:52
definition for this word.
04:54 - 04:55
So we know that bio means life.
04:56 - 04:57
Think for a minute.
04:57 - 05:03
Have you ever seen auto or graph in any other
05:03 - 05:04
context or words?
05:07 - 05:12
I bet you have the meaning of this large word
05:12 - 05:18
autobiography means a book written by oneself about their own
05:18 - 05:28
wife. So although automatic Autumn A ties dhe, it's done
05:28 - 05:34
by oneself and or its done automatically, bio means life
05:34 - 05:38
in graph is too reference, writing or printing.
05:38 - 05:42
So an autobiography is a book written by oneself about
05:42 - 05:43
their own life.
05:44 - 05:51
So Michelle Obama wrote an autobiography called Becoming Recently, and
05:51 - 05:54
it is a book about her life before she met
05:55 - 06:00
President Barack Obama during the time they were dating and
06:00 - 06:03
life during the presidency when they lived in the White
06:03 - 06:06
House. So she wrote an autobiography about herself.
06:08 - 06:09
So as you go on with your learning this week,
06:10 - 06:12
you're going to be looking at Gen.
06:12 - 06:18
Mort and Bio a lot and their inter related with
06:18 - 06:19
the circle of life.
06:19 - 06:21
They have life and death and birth and family all
06:22 - 06:22
in common.
06:23 - 06:26
So as you go through your dick Odubel text this
06:27 - 06:28
week, you're gonna be looking for those roots.
06:29 - 06:31
And as you go through your activities where you're focused
06:32 - 06:35
on meaning, be thinking about how you can look at
06:35 - 06:36
a large word like autobiography.
06:38 - 06:40
Break it into pieces by finding routes that you know.
06:41 - 06:43
And if you don't know, you can always go toe
06:43 - 06:47
Entomology dot com and look up the meaning of roots.
06:48 - 06:51
So maybe an autobiography, you new bio and graph.
06:51 - 06:52
But you weren't sure what auto met.
06:52 - 06:55
You could go look up auto to give you another
06:55 - 06:58
clue. So using technology is your friend When you're doing
06:59 - 07:01
morphology is not a bad thing at all.
07:01 - 07:03
It's a really good thing to learn to be resourceful
07:03 - 07:05
and help you develop more meaning in these woods.
07:06 - 07:08
So best of luck to you as you're learning this
07:09 - 07:12
week on the Latin roots of Gen More, and I'll
