00:01 - 00:01
Hi, everyone.
00:01 - 00:03
I'm C on and this is my Chapter nine.
00:04 - 00:06
Many health listen about asthma s.
00:07 - 00:07
So what is asthma?
00:09 - 00:12
As was a condition in which a person's airways become
00:12 - 00:16
inflamed, narrow and swell, and produce extra music mucus, which
00:16 - 00:18
makes it difficult to breathe so you can see in
00:19 - 00:23
this diagram that compares a normal long where muscles are
00:23 - 00:27
relaxed and there's a normal mucus lining, which allows the
00:27 - 00:27
air to flow freely.
00:28 - 00:30
Um, compared to on the right, which is an asthmatic
00:31 - 00:35
long, which shows some airways that are constricted, um, which
00:35 - 00:37
are swollen and have the tighter muscles.
00:37 - 00:40
And there's more mucus clogging the airways.
00:41 - 00:44
And so when this happens, it makes it difficult for
00:44 - 00:48
the oxygen to move through, which is what essentially causes
00:49 - 00:51
the asthmatic symptoms or asthma attacks.
00:53 - 00:54
So what are the symptoms?
00:55 - 00:59
Um, symptoms vary from person to person, but most the
00:59 - 01:00
common symptoms are as follows.
01:02 - 01:04
Um, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing.
01:05 - 01:09
You may have a dry cough coughing at nighttime, um,
01:10 - 01:11
wheezing or chest pains.
01:12 - 01:16
Um, a lot of times and inhale inhaler can help
01:17 - 01:18
lessen these symptoms.
01:19 - 01:21
A CZ Well, it's just ensuring that you have a
01:21 - 01:23
good environment that you're surrounded by to make sure that
01:23 - 01:28
the in the symptoms are, um, exasperated or bothered.
01:29 - 01:31
So some things that can cause these symptoms or that
01:31 - 01:36
can cause asthma are some household cleaner fumes, dust debris,
01:37 - 01:40
dander, cockroach and might debris.
01:41 - 01:42
Um, genetics is a big part of asthma.
01:43 - 01:46
If you have an unhealthy diet, drink a lot of
01:46 - 01:51
alcohol. Um, if you if you're sick often, um, if
01:51 - 01:53
you have cuts that you're allergic to where you live
01:53 - 01:54
in a very polluted area.
01:55 - 01:58
All of these can cause asthmatic symptoms or asthma um,
01:59 - 02:01
which can then worsen the symptoms and that asthma attacks.
02:05 - 02:06
So how are students affected with asthma?
02:07 - 02:10
Um, there's many ways that students could be affected by
02:10 - 02:15
asthma. Um, oftentimes, when asthma attacks happen or when the
02:15 - 02:16
symptoms worsen.
02:17 - 02:20
Like I said, the airways tighten, causing extreme difficulty in
02:20 - 02:26
breathing. Um, and then those airways tightened and swell, and
02:26 - 02:27
so it makes breathing difficult.
02:28 - 02:32
But some things some other things that are affected on
02:32 - 02:35
by asthma can really affect.
02:35 - 02:38
Have the student performs in the classroom, so something's air
02:38 - 02:41
Anxiety of assistant is very anxious about what is happening
02:42 - 02:45
in the classroom, or if they're really worried about a
02:45 - 02:46
presentation or project or something.
02:47 - 02:48
They can become very anxious.
02:49 - 02:52
And one of the symptoms of anxiety and anxiety attacks
02:53 - 02:56
his shortness of breath, um, or hyperventilating, which can cause
02:58 - 03:02
that swelling of the airways, which can then cause asthma
03:03 - 03:07
attacks. Another thing that's a big effect on students is
03:07 - 03:07
their medication.
03:08 - 03:09
So having an inhaler, that's important.
03:10 - 03:13
But it's expensive, so that can cause a difficulty for
03:13 - 03:13
a student.
03:14 - 03:17
If they're not able to afford the medication, there's physical
03:18 - 03:21
symptoms, so just like the coffin, things like that.
03:21 - 03:24
But they may not be able to do all of
03:25 - 03:27
the physical activity in the classroom or gym class for
03:28 - 03:30
recess, so that can really affect their self esteem because
03:30 - 03:32
they're not able to participate with everything.
03:33 - 03:35
Um, and if they have extreme asthma attacks, often they
03:35 - 03:36
may be missing school.
03:37 - 03:38
And so they're missing out on a lot of valuable
03:38 - 03:42
information, Um, and maybe kind of held back from the
03:42 - 03:44
rest of the class because they need time to catch
03:44 - 03:49
up. Um, what are the classroom conditions like?
03:50 - 03:52
So some conditions in the classroom connection of worsen the
03:52 - 03:55
symptoms and potentially increase the likelihood of an asthma attack.
03:56 - 03:59
So a lot of these, um effects or the conditions
04:00 - 04:04
that I talked about earlier that include dust, um, dander,
04:05 - 04:08
cockroaches, air qualities and making sure you have clean air
04:08 - 04:11
vents, things like that, making sure there's a good amount
04:12 - 04:14
of exercise, but not something that's too stressful on the
04:14 - 04:17
student. Um, if student has allergies or you're in a
04:17 - 04:22
highly like, very like an outdoor environment where there's a
04:22 - 04:25
lot of pollen and stuff like that, a swell is
04:25 - 04:29
like strong fumes like cleaning supplies, art supplies, um, clay
04:30 - 04:34
paint. Those kind of fumes can really, um, irritate someone's
04:35 - 04:35
lungs and airways.
04:36 - 04:39
A swell as bright lights and things like that.
04:39 - 04:42
Those can really irritate a student and cause them to
04:42 - 04:45
be anxious, which causes them to have difficulty breathing as
04:46 - 04:49
well. So what can we as teachers do to accommodate
04:49 - 04:49
these students?
04:50 - 04:53
We can create an asthma education plan.
04:54 - 04:56
So working with the student to see what kind of
04:56 - 05:02
accommodations they need for when their asthma symptoms worsen, as
05:02 - 05:06
well as educating the class on asthma, asthma attacks and
05:06 - 05:08
being safe around these students who may have these difficulties,
05:10 - 05:12
it's very important so that the student feels safe in
05:12 - 05:12
their environment.
05:14 - 05:17
And also, the students can be aware of what some
05:18 - 05:21
asthma attack symptoms look like so that they can get
05:21 - 05:22
help as soon as possible.
05:23 - 05:24
You can also check the air quality.
05:24 - 05:27
Often. You can make a safe physical environment, as well
05:27 - 05:31
as physical accommodations for classroom activities or things like gym
05:31 - 05:35
class. Um, knowing your students triggers is very important because
05:35 - 05:38
then you know what might cause their symptoms to worsen.
05:39 - 05:43
So being knowing that can help you reduce those symptoms
05:44 - 05:47
and then keeping your classroom clean, the clean workspaces and
05:48 - 05:51
low fumes can make sure that the students are irritated.
05:52 - 05:55
Their airways and their lungs are safe and healthy.
05:55 - 05:59
Um, and that way you don't have issues with, um
05:59 - 06:03
as my tax and things like that, and they're my
