00:01 - 00:03
welcome everyone to your free pharmacy fundamentals.
00:04 - 00:07
Course, This is your first lecture in a series of
00:07 - 00:10
three. Well, actually learn what is a pharmacy technician?
00:11 - 00:13
If you never heard of a pharmacy tech, we're gonna
00:13 - 00:16
find out what exactly does a pharmacy tech do, And
00:16 - 00:18
then we'll learn, Like, why's it more beneficial to get
00:19 - 00:22
your certification and had a cheap recertification once you become
00:22 - 00:26
certified? So what exactly is a pharmacy technician?
00:27 - 00:29
Ah, pharmacy technician is supervised by a pharmacist.
00:30 - 00:33
A pharmacist has a degree, a bachelor degree in pharmacy,
00:34 - 00:35
and that could be our pH.
00:35 - 00:38
Or they have a doctorate in pharmacy, and that is
00:38 - 00:42
a farm deep Pharmacists thers as the manager or the
00:42 - 00:46
supervisor pharmacy, and they delegate responsibilities to the pharmacy technician.
00:47 - 00:51
These duties that Ross Paul excuse me responsibilities, they delegate
00:51 - 00:51
to the pharmacy.
00:52 - 00:57
Tech actually leaves room for the pharmacists to work on
00:57 - 00:59
more clinical duties that they like to say, which actually
01:00 - 01:03
is them engaging with the patient and counseling the patient
01:03 - 01:04
when the medication they're taking.
01:05 - 01:09
But the responsibilities of a technician requires the technician to
01:09 - 01:10
interact there.
01:10 - 01:13
The frontline interaction, the first interaction that a patient has
01:14 - 01:18
with the pharmacy in greeting, understanding their illness.
01:19 - 01:22
What, The medication that the doctor prescribed.
01:23 - 01:26
Understanding of it, Understanding of co pays on their meditation
01:27 - 01:29
history and in the pharmacy technician would do what we
01:29 - 01:30
call data entering.
01:31 - 01:34
They input all of that information to the pharmacy software
01:35 - 01:40
bill, the insurance company sometimes contacting that insurance company many
01:40 - 01:43
insurance companies throughout the day to get them at them
01:43 - 01:44
to pay for the medication.
01:45 - 01:49
And it's just a simple of clarifying misinformation.
01:51 - 01:55
Excuse me or getting them to approve for missing medication.
01:55 - 01:58
Patient goes on vacation, and they forgot their medication at
01:58 - 02:01
home so often, you know, we have to contact the
02:01 - 02:02
insurance companies to get it approved.
02:03 - 02:05
And so they do handle a lot of that than
02:06 - 02:08
they do what we call production, which is filling the
02:08 - 02:12
prescription, which could be counting the medication out, scoring the
02:12 - 02:17
medication into a bottle, labeling the packaging if it's a
02:17 - 02:21
cream or ointment, or I drop or solution whatever form
02:21 - 02:23
and then dispensing it to the patient at the register
02:24 - 02:25
and checking them out.
02:25 - 02:28
They also assist patients that are purchasing medicine over the
02:29 - 02:31
counter. They may not know which costs are of the
02:31 - 02:33
take which we all know there's so many of them.
02:33 - 02:35
You want the one that stops your cough?
02:35 - 02:37
Do you want the one that helps you cough up
02:37 - 02:39
more? Is this one safe for my child?
02:40 - 02:41
Is this one for adults on Lee?
02:42 - 02:45
So they're out there guiding the patients out there and
02:46 - 02:48
leading them back to the pharmacist to help counsel them
02:48 - 02:49
on their choices.
02:50 - 02:50
Then what?
02:50 - 02:53
The pharmacy technicians do what we call non discretionary duties.
02:54 - 02:58
The non discretionary duties are more of the that administrative
02:59 - 03:04
at sets administrative aspect that goes behind the running of
03:04 - 03:05
a pharmacy business.
03:06 - 03:08
Ah, those pharmacy technicians, this goes on set a lot,
03:09 - 03:10
but it should be set more.
03:10 - 03:12
Keep the pharmacy running.
03:13 - 03:15
Without your pharmacy technicians, you have no pharmacy.
03:16 - 03:21
And so the pharmacy technicians responsible for ordering supplies, ordering
03:22 - 03:29
inventory, restocking inventory records, Sally invoices, pulling inspired medication to
03:29 - 03:32
get to get money back for our medicine that was
03:32 - 03:34
unused on so so much more.
03:35 - 03:39
So the pharmacy technicians do so much regarding keeping the
03:39 - 03:40
business of a pharmacy running.
03:41 - 03:45
In addition to Philly medication I have listed here HIPPA,
03:46 - 03:50
they're responsible for protecting patients, privacy medication, privacy, making sure
03:50 - 03:53
that information is not dispensed to others without that patient
03:53 - 03:57
consent. Ah kam pounding If they're working in that type
03:57 - 04:02
of setting, converting a formulation of a prescription into a
04:02 - 04:02
different form.
04:03 - 04:05
If it comes in the tablet and the doctor wants
04:06 - 04:09
it in a liquid form, the pharmacy technician will do
04:09 - 04:12
that versus when they're in the filling process.
04:12 - 04:15
The production process of that prescription they would do calm,
04:15 - 04:20
pounding meditation therapy Management falls in line with assisting the
04:21 - 04:26
pharmacist with counseling of patients and identifying if they're experiencing
04:27 - 04:27
duplicate therapy.
04:28 - 04:31
But unknown to them and also unknown to their physicians,
04:32 - 04:35
they may have multiple physicians who do not know that
04:36 - 04:39
they're taking more than one type of blood pressure medication
04:39 - 04:42
is. So it's about reconcile ing that within their profile
04:43 - 04:43
and helping them understand.
04:44 - 04:47
Ah, you should stop taking these medicines if the doctor
04:47 - 04:50
prescribed this, that and the other on.
04:50 - 04:52
Also, I preached this a lot.
04:52 - 04:53
Breach teach.
04:53 - 04:57
There's a lot that pharmacy technicians can be strong medical
04:57 - 05:00
advocates for their family, their friends and their patients, because
05:01 - 05:05
they're building that report with their patients is so they're
05:05 - 05:05
able to catch.
05:06 - 05:08
I say no one's perfect, so they're able to catch
05:09 - 05:13
if the doctor tyre Lee wrote for an adult strength
05:13 - 05:16
first as a pediatric strength, or if the doctor wrote
05:16 - 05:21
for something a different form than the patient is used
05:21 - 05:24
to taking the used to taking the extended release and
05:24 - 05:27
the doctor wrote for plane and we go on Lee
05:27 - 05:30
Phil. What the doctor wrote for so their pharmacy technician
05:31 - 05:33
is very critical and catching those tights in the states.
05:34 - 05:37
So have you become a pharmacy technician in most states,
05:37 - 05:38
homes at all but most states.
05:39 - 05:41
You have to be 17 years of age or older
05:41 - 05:44
odor. In that case, you would have a high school
05:44 - 05:46
diploma or a G E d.
05:46 - 05:48
And they want you to produce some type of pharmacy.
05:49 - 05:54
Technician training program is not mandatory to half a pause
05:55 - 05:57
every time I say this is not mandatory to pursue
05:58 - 06:01
a pharmacy technician training program to become a pharmacy technician
06:02 - 06:06
but to become a certified pharmacy technician and in some
06:07 - 06:10
states, before you can get licensed, you have to take
06:10 - 06:11
a pharmacy technician training program.
06:12 - 06:15
So I hope is beneficial for you to go ahead
06:15 - 06:19
and do that as well, but not mandatory before you
06:19 - 06:21
too become a pharmacy technician now.
06:21 - 06:21
I didn't.
06:22 - 06:24
If you're going to get certified, which I encourage you
06:24 - 06:27
to do because it is much more beneficial to you
06:27 - 06:29
if you're going to enter into this career, you should
06:30 - 06:31
go ahead and get that certification.
06:33 - 06:37
Because again, most states require certification before you can get
06:37 - 06:38
your pharmacy license.
06:39 - 06:42
So, um, some states is vice versa.
06:43 - 06:45
You have to get your license, and then you can
06:45 - 06:49
get your certification, but in any taste.
06:50 - 06:51
If you have to go ahead and get that certification.
06:52 - 06:53
That and you have to take a pharmacy training program
06:54 - 06:57
again, is just much more beneficial for you to go
06:57 - 06:59
ahead. Just get your certification out the way so you
06:59 - 07:00
don't have to deal with all man.
07:01 - 07:04
I'm tryingto get this job as a pharmacy technician, but
07:04 - 07:06
I have to apply for my license and I can't
07:06 - 07:08
apply for my license because I'm not certified.
07:10 - 07:11
Okay, it's financially more beneficial.
07:12 - 07:15
There's usually a dollar to $2 raise I think is
07:15 - 07:15
actually much more.
07:16 - 07:21
But, um Massa raise on pay rate, um, in becoming
07:22 - 07:25
a certified pharmacy technician versus your town or parts who
07:25 - 07:32
are pharmacy personnel, pharmacy specialists or um, dependent on your
07:32 - 07:33
state. Ah, pharmacy specials.
07:33 - 07:35
Maybe higher than a certified pharmacy tech.
07:36 - 07:39
But, um, some states of pharmacy specialist in a pharmacy
07:40 - 07:44
personnel pharmacy assistant they're all considered the same bracket, but
07:44 - 07:48
a farm is a certified pharmacy technician, actually gets paid
07:49 - 07:51
more. You all are doing the same is that task,
07:52 - 07:57
But a certified pharmacy technician is paid more so if
07:57 - 07:59
you're going to pursue a pharmacy technician training program.
08:00 - 08:02
But what kind of course is would you take?
08:03 - 08:06
If you enter into the university or technical system, you
08:06 - 08:08
have to take what they call core courses.
08:08 - 08:12
These programs offer of the poem a track and or
08:12 - 08:13
sometimes an associate degree.
08:14 - 08:18
And if you're pursuing that track, they they ask you
08:18 - 08:22
to take these core courses core courses or math science.
08:23 - 08:30
Uh, and math, science, English psychology, humanity's, um, for pharmacy
08:30 - 08:31
tech program.
08:31 - 08:33
You have to take anatomy and physiology.
08:34 - 08:39
Ah, form of biology, English psychology, and I think there's
08:39 - 08:39
another course.
08:40 - 08:42
I can't quite remember it right now, another course as
08:42 - 08:44
well, and that would be considered your core courses.
08:44 - 08:46
You have to take those and get those out the
08:46 - 08:48
way. If you're entering into the technical program.
08:49 - 08:51
And then you'll be able to pursue your pharmacy courses,
08:53 - 08:54
which are basically control a pharmacy.
08:55 - 08:58
What we're discussing now the history of pharmacy.
08:59 - 09:02
On that you'll take pharmacy calculations, how to calculate those
09:03 - 09:07
days, supply for inhalers and in those cough serves and
09:08 - 09:12
how to convert that different formulation into another.
09:12 - 09:16
If you doing compound pharmacy and then there's pharmacology, pharmacology
09:17 - 09:18
is one of the toughest course.
09:18 - 09:21
Is depending on um, well, just depending on a lot.
09:22 - 09:23
Some people find it easy.
09:23 - 09:25
Some people find a heart is a lot of memorization,
09:26 - 09:30
a lot of information to absorb about drugs, several different
09:31 - 09:34
kinds of drugs, their classes, how they act on the
09:34 - 09:38
body and their organs on what are they manipulating and
09:38 - 09:42
just so much regarding just how drugs interact with each
09:42 - 09:48
other. Now, if you're not entering into the technical system,
09:49 - 09:51
where the university system Ah, lot of the online pharmacy
09:52 - 09:58
training programs just offer you the pharmacy training courses, the
09:58 - 10:00
pharmacy training for Matt.
10:00 - 10:03
I want to say regarding all of those topics, and
10:03 - 10:06
you have to you bypass all of those humanities and
10:06 - 10:08
English and biology s.
10:08 - 10:10
So there are two exams to take when you are
10:11 - 10:11
trying to get your certification.
10:13 - 10:17
There's the pharmacy technician certification exam that's offered by the
10:17 - 10:17
P. T.
10:18 - 10:20
C. Bean Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
10:21 - 10:25
This exam is nationally recognized, accepted in all 50 states.
10:26 - 10:28
You will be a National Certify pharmacy technician.
10:29 - 10:31
When you take this exam, it's 90 questions.
10:32 - 10:33
It lasts about an hour and 50 minutes.
10:35 - 10:37
They really only grade you on 80 of the questions,
10:37 - 10:40
and once you're done taking the test, you'll know right
10:40 - 10:42
away. If you have passed, it gives you a pass
10:43 - 10:45
or fail as soon as you finish, and you'll know
10:45 - 10:47
whether or not you have to retake it again.
10:47 - 10:52
But again, this exam is highly recommended because it is
10:52 - 10:55
nationally recognized in all 50 states.
10:56 - 10:58
There's a second at Sam that you could take is
10:58 - 10:59
called the E X C P.
11:00 - 11:02
T. As a loan for the certification of pharmacy technicians
11:03 - 11:07
is offered by the National Pharmacy Technician Association.
11:09 - 11:11
Uh, it is marginally accepted in certain states.
11:12 - 11:15
Also not everywhere is two hours and 10 minutes long.
11:16 - 11:19
Ah, 120 questions are they only graze you think on
11:19 - 11:21
110 and again.
11:21 - 11:23
So this is over you'll receive a pass or fail
11:25 - 11:26
this one.
11:26 - 11:29
Some states require this one or they accept this one,
11:29 - 11:31
and some states do not.
11:31 - 11:33
So you have to find out which one, your state
11:34 - 11:38
or your your essay, your profession, Your facility.
11:39 - 11:41
If they prefer, you take one over the other.
11:41 - 11:44
I do encourage you to be careful, though, because if
11:44 - 11:47
you find that you might be moving in your future
11:47 - 11:50
or you have that type of personality where you don't
11:50 - 11:54
mind moving transplanting, then you don't want to get caught.
11:54 - 11:56
The situation where you took the e et.
11:56 - 11:59
Cpt. But then the new state that you move to
12:00 - 12:03
Onley recognizes the national certification exam.
12:03 - 12:06
So be wary when you're deciding on which is a
12:06 - 12:06
M to take.
12:07 - 12:10
After you become a certified pharmacy technician, you have to
12:10 - 12:14
maintain it every two years by completing continuing education credits.
12:15 - 12:16
We call them Si ese.
12:16 - 12:19
Ah, lot of medical professions have to complete the CEO
12:20 - 12:21
who maintained their licensing.
12:22 - 12:23
Pharmacy technicians are different.
12:24 - 12:26
We have to maintain we have to take continuing education
12:27 - 12:28
to maintain our certification.
12:30 - 12:33
Some states, though, do require you to take si ese
12:34 - 12:36
who maintain your license and your certification.
12:37 - 12:40
So, uh, see, Eve's are like these little quizzes.
12:40 - 12:44
They're articles regarding some type of new advancement in the
12:44 - 12:45
pharmacy field.
12:45 - 12:48
And then you'll take a quiz regarding that what you
12:48 - 12:50
read in the article and you'll get graded on it
12:50 - 12:51
and you earn credits.
12:52 - 12:55
You're in his point, and you have to maintain 20
12:55 - 12:59
credits off CEO every two years and submit that and
12:59 - 13:02
to renew your certification now, you can get the sea
13:03 - 13:06
east from various organizations listed here, such as the American
13:07 - 13:12
Association of Pharmacy Technicians, the National Pharmacy Technician Association we
13:12 - 13:12
mentioned earlier.
13:13 - 13:15
And then, if you do a Google search on pharmacy
13:16 - 13:20
Tech CEO, you'll find several websites that offer Ah, a
13:20 - 13:21
subscription to unlimited.
13:22 - 13:22
Si, ese.
13:23 - 13:25
There you could find free see ease if you hunt
13:25 - 13:27
for. And I'm really good at hunting mine down.
13:28 - 13:31
I haven't paid for C e yet, but, uh, but
13:31 - 13:35
if you don't wantto oh, through the stress hunting down
13:35 - 13:37
free Si, ese, you just pay for that subscription.
13:38 - 13:38
They're really affordable.

13:42 - 13:44
a technician certified check for 15 years.
13:45 - 13:48
So if I'm just a hard battle to fight But,
13:49 - 13:52
uh, you could pay that that small monthly.
13:52 - 13:55
It's not monthly yearly subscription, usually about 30 bucks, maybe
13:56 - 13:59
40 and then you'll have unlimited access to see ese
