00:01 - 00:03
my name is Drew Williams and I chose to do
00:03 - 00:06
my topic Black Lives Matter.
00:07 - 00:09
So I really just want to talk about the stereotypes
00:10 - 00:12
surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement.
00:13 - 00:14
So the main points that we're going to talk about
00:14 - 00:16
today is what is the Black Lives Matter movement?
00:17 - 00:19
Does the Black Lives Matter movement encourage violence?
00:21 - 00:23
Does BLM claim all police are racist?
00:24 - 00:26
And lastly, is the BLM movement the same as the
00:26 - 00:27
civil rights movement?
00:32 - 00:35
So blm was started by three women by the name
00:35 - 00:38
of Alicia Garza, Patrice Cullors and Opal Tom Petty.
00:39 - 00:43
This is back in 2013 following the acquittal of Trayvon
00:43 - 00:45
martin's murder George Zimmerman.
00:46 - 00:49
This movement really began to take off after the hashtag
00:50 - 00:51
Black Lives Matter was created.
00:52 - 00:55
It was very easy for people to access information about
00:55 - 00:59
the movement as well as continue to push forward and
00:59 - 01:01
01:02 - 01:08
Yeah, does the Black Lives Matter movement encourage violence.
01:10 - 01:13
So opposers to the Black Lives Matter movement usually write
01:13 - 01:16
it off as people were just causing issues they tied
01:16 - 01:18
to looting and rights.
01:19 - 01:21
But this isn't something that is taught in the movement,
01:22 - 01:26
that Chicago chapter leader actually came out saying that they
01:26 - 01:30
do not stand behind anything regarding any type of violence.
01:30 - 01:31
Crime, anything illegal.
01:33 - 01:37
And it's kind of hard to see that when the
01:37 - 01:39
social media and news outlets are very biased.
01:41 - 01:44
Uh, so you're most likely just going to see diluting
01:45 - 01:46
and things of that sort.
01:47 - 01:51
Also, Former President donald trump came out on twitter saying
01:51 - 01:55
that Black Lives Matter is a hate symbol and with
01:55 - 01:58
the amount of supporters that he has, you can find
01:58 - 02:01
it very easy to give a Black Lives Matter movement
02:01 - 02:02
bad rap.
02:05 - 02:07
Does BLM claim all police are racist?
02:08 - 02:09
The short answer for this is no.
02:10 - 02:12
The Black Lives Matter movement is in preaching that all
02:13 - 02:16
officers are racist there, simply looking at law enforcement as
02:16 - 02:19
a whole and pointing out the corrupt system that has
02:19 - 02:21
plagued the black community for ages.
02:23 - 02:27
This kind of came with generalizing that By saying one
02:27 - 02:27
cop is bad.
02:28 - 02:31
Uh, some people tend to say, oh well, all cops
02:31 - 02:34
are bad and we shouldn't have cops and things of
02:34 - 02:36
this sort, but this also isn't something that black Lives
02:36 - 02:45
Matter is teaching is the BLM movement the same as
02:45 - 02:46
the civil rights movement.
02:47 - 02:51
So these two movements are very similar uh, surrounding African
02:51 - 02:56
americans, but one is a social movement that others activist
02:56 - 03:01
movement. So, black Lives Matter is actually an activist movement
03:01 - 03:04
and it is a campaign against violence towards african americans.
03:06 - 03:10
Okay. And the civil rights movement, their goal was to
03:10 - 03:15
end racial segregation and discrimination as well as equal rights.
03:17 - 03:19
Something that they did similar was boycotts.
03:20 - 03:22
That was a really good form of making a statement
03:23 - 03:25
and gaining more support from surrounding communities.
03:27 - 03:32
One major difference between these two movements is technology back
03:32 - 03:37
then, the technology wasn't just instagram Snapchat, twitter things where
03:37 - 03:40
you could literally post anything in hashtag it.
03:40 - 03:43
So that's actually how black lives matter blew up and
03:43 - 03:44
really gain traction was through hashtags.
03:45 - 03:49
So this is on a completely a different scale.
03:53 - 03:56
In closing, I chose this because I think it's very
03:57 - 04:00
important that we do our own research, uh, using reliable
04:01 - 04:04
sources so that we're able to see for ourselves and
04:04 - 04:06
form our own opinion on what these type of movements
04:07 - 04:11
are, rather than looking at social media or just biased
04:11 - 04:12
news, television channels.
04:14 - 04:15
That being said, thank you.
