  1. everybody. Welcome to sports psychology sets like 300.
  2. My name's Suzanne dot I'll be instructor for the class
  3. and I just wanted to provide this brief introductory message
  4. for you just to give you a little bit of
  5. an idea of who I am and also what to
  6. expect for this course.
  7. So I'm gonna keep this brief, and I'm gonna try
  8. to do this each week so that I can help
  9. keep you all on track.
  10. All right, so you see there that I got my
  11. bachelor's degree in psychology and history from Presbyterian College, and
  12. I learned pretty early on that without an advanced degree
  13. in either of those fields, that probably wasn't going to
  14. go very far.
  15. So I started making my plans for graduate school.
  16. And since I'm from Orlando, I thought it was better
  17. idea for me to go to a state school and
  18. pay in state tuition that it was to continue on
  19. with the private school tuition, So I was lucky enough
  20. to get in to Florida State University.
  21. Then I studied their educational psychology, but it was us
  22. a sport psychology track.
  23. And Florida State has one of the top sports psychology
  24. programs in the nation.
  25. So it's really fortunate to get in there and to
  26. do some work with the student athletes.
  27. Um, I did a couple of internships.
  28. I didn't want it.
  29. The Orlando Area Sports Commission and I also went to
  30. the U.
  31. S Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs, and from that those
  32. two positions.
  33. I really got an interest in international amateur sport, so
  34. I stayed on at Florida State for my doctoral degree.
  35. That diploma says it's a physical education that's actually in
  36. sport management, and I was able to combine my sports
  37. syke. I'm a sport management background and worked really closely
  38. with a lot of the student athletes and one of
  39. the top athletic programs in the country, and that provided
  40. me with a lot of really good experience in training.
  41. After I graduated from Florida State, moved appear to Greenville,
  42. and I worked in or I taught at the North
  43. Korean North Greenville University in the Sport Management Department.
  44. I've also held adjunct positions at Clemson University and Parks,
  45. Recreation and Tourism Management.
  46. I hold an adjunct position at Anderson University and Furman
  47. University and upstate, and I teach for psychology at all
  48. three of those last three University.
  49. So it's provided me of the really good, diverse background.
  50. All right, moving on because I want to keep this
  51. brief just a little bit about me.
  52. I am a volleyball referee.
  53. I do collegiate volleyball and juniors volleyball, and that's really
  54. a big part of what I do.
  55. Uh uh, that's my team.
  56. Now that's the team that I play on.
  57. And so I'm going to bring a lot of anecdotes
  58. and stories and share with you some of my experiences
  59. from officiating voluble.
  60. And I also hope that that's something that you all
  61. will consider.
  62. There's a great shortage of referees out there, no matter
  63. what sport.
  64. And if you have an interest, it's a great way
  65. to give back and to make a little bit of
  66. extra money.
  67. Ah, my favorite band.
  68. There's the chicks.
  69. You see them playing live with Beyonce.
  70. If you haven't seen that show or, uh, that song,
  71. you need to google it.
  72. It's great.
  73. Amazing performance.
  74. Uh, I love my Eminem's especially Love the Green Eminem's
  75. because I like the character green.
  76. Uh, since the pandemic, I've picked up two hobbies.
  77. I've been playing the ukulele trying to learn that.
  78. Not really good at it yet, but I have gotten
  79. pretty good at juggling.
  80. Ah, those are my two hobbies that I've been developing
  81. the past few months.
  82. I also have two daughters.
  83. I looked for a recent picture of them and I
  84. couldn't find one.
  85. A recent picture of the two of them together.
  86. But my older daughter will be headed off to college
  87. in a couple of weeks.
  88. She's gonna be a freshman at Rollins College and Winter
  89. Park, Florida And my other daughter is a sophomore at
  90. Greenville High.
  91. So all right, let's talk a little bit about the
  92. class now.
  93. So this is Psych 300.
  94. It is a special topics class.
  95. One of these sections is sports psychology.
  96. And in this class, we're gonna learn about learning.
  97. We're gonna learn about motivation a little bit about social
  98. interaction. We're going to do quite a bit on mental
  99. training and performance enhancement.
  100. We're also gonna look at health and positive psychology.
  101. Um, that's a lot to go over.
  102. And because this glasses online yeah, they're gonna have to
  103. work really hard to keep up with it.
  104. I'm going to be sending you announcements.
  105. I'm going to try to get keeping you on task.
  106. Um, I hope you don't find that I over communicate.
  107. But my experience tells me that I've got to do
  108. that in order to keep people meeting their deadlines and
  109. to keep progressing.
  110. Otherwise, Ah, lot of students equate online with easier or
  111. with less work.
  112. And that is not the case for this class.
  113. I want to get you started right away thinking about
  114. ah, this young gymnasts, Caitlin Ohashi.
  115. You may remember her.
  116. Her video went viral about a year ago of her
  117. floor exercise performance.
  118. She just graduated from U C L.
  119. A. And she kind of took a step down from
  120. the national team in order to compete in collegiate athletics
  121. or gymnastics.
  122. And, um, you'll see when you watch the video.
  123. I've posted the video for you on blackboard, and, uh,
  124. we're gonna talk about it in class a little bit
  125. on Tuesday.
  126. All right?
  127. And that brings me to our class time.
  128. This we do have one scheduled class time every week.
  129. Tuesday at 305 I've created a blackboard collaborate link for
  130. you in black board.
  131. Please familiarize yourself with how to use that you can
  132. enter the course early or enter the class early.
  133. About 15 minutes early.
  134. I'll have it open for you.
  135. Ah, plan on this every Tuesday.
  136. I do have some expectations in regard to that.
  137. And that is, uh I don't want you driving during
  138. class. This is a time for you to sit down
  139. and do a little bit of work.
  140. Take some notes, er, and get up to date on
  141. your expectations for the class.
  142. I don't want you lying in bed.
  143. I don't want to see anyone in pajamas.
  144. Okay, Uh, I want to see your face is not
  145. a profile pic.
  146. That is.
  147. I want you engage during class because if you're not
  148. engaged for this short hour and 15 minutes once a
  149. week, every week, then you're going to fall behind.
  150. It's really gonna help you a lot.
  151. I also noticed that I do have some office hours
  152. there every Tuesday and Thursday from log in and I'll
  153. be there.
  154. It may to you if you let me know ahead
  155. of time.
  156. If you want to join because I might be up
  157. and about walking around.
  158. Um, I may not be at my desk.
  159. Alright. Looking ahead there you've got some quizzes to look
  160. forward to.
  161. Every week, every chapter that we cover will have a
  162. quiz for in it.
  163. Short quiz five or six.
  164. Now I take that back up.
  165. That's about 10 questions.
  166. They're all coming from the textbook.
  167. So you need to read the chapter.
  168. You need to take the quiz before we meet on
  169. Tuesdays. Okay.
  170. Put it in your calendar.
  171. Get used to it.
  172. Now. If we cover two chapters in a week, you
  173. may have to quizzes to do again.
  174. I'll remind you about these, but just get used to
  175. taking quizzes before you come to your class.
  176. You have coming up a major assignment and it is
  177. your story.
  178. Your paper.
  179. You need to write your story.
  180. There's a rubric for you in an evaluation form on
  181. blackboard. Police consulted before you write your paper.
  182. I'm looking for creativity.
  183. I'm looking for ah, personality.
  184. I want to know about you.
  185. Please look over the syllabus in the textbook as well,
  186. because I want you to tie your experiences.
  187. You're perverse and personal and professional goals end with some
  188. of the course learning outcomes.
  189. What do you hope to get out of this course?
  190. These things should appear in your paper.
  191. And then I want you to include an ex ERT.
  192. I've I've created a discussion on blackboard for you.
  193. The ex ERT is just so that the rest of
  194. the class could get to know who else is in
  195. this class.
  196. So I'm hoping for just cut and paste 100 words
  197. or less from your paper into that discussion or if
  198. you'd like, you may submit a video.
  199. Uh, might just be reading that 100 word ex ERT,
  200. but put something in that discussion.
  201. Everybody is required to do this.
  202. Put something in that discussion that introduces you to the
  203. rest of the class, something that appears in your story.
  204. Um we're gonna dio look a a caveman Ohashi video
  205. and we're going to discuss it on Tuesday.
  206. There's a link for that blackboard as well.
  207. And I also want you to look for the tables.
  208. There's, ah, Siris of word documents that are tables that
  209. will help you to study.
  210. So the first table we're gonna look at is the
  211. stages of motor learning.
  212. And, um, if you write really big or If you
  213. write a lot, you may find that this table's not
  214. big enough for you, so it might make sense for
  215. you to take your notes on a separate sheet of
  216. paper. But I just wanted to provide this table for
  217. you so that you understand ah, good way to learn
  218. each of the stages of motor learning and their characteristics
  219. work on that for Tuesday.
  220. We'll talk about it a little bit in class when
  221. we meet at 305 on Tuesday.
  222. All right, you'll find those tables listed for you in
  223. black board.
  224. So those are your upcoming assignments.
  225. That's what's going on.
  226. This week.
  227. I'm around.
  228. Feel free to shoot me an email.
  229. Let me know if you have any questions if you
  230. have any uncertainties, because I'm gonna make sure everybody's clear
  231. on what's expected of them.
  232. Okay, see all Tuesday
