00:01 - 00:06
Hello, this is Tracy Infante. I will be giving the report on the analysis for Rumpel
00:07 - 00:07
Stink.
00:08 - 00:13
Um This is a fairytale collected by the Brothers Grimm in
00:13 - 00:18
uh and it's a German tale in origin. It has um
00:18 - 00:19
its setting
00:19 - 00:22
um in a small kingdom
00:22 - 00:23
um
00:23 - 00:24
in Germany
00:24 - 00:26
in around the 16th century.
00:27 - 00:33
Um What we have here in this tale in this small kingdom is a man
00:33 - 00:39
who is the miller. He works making um flour from the grains in the town
00:40 - 00:45
and he brings this uh flower to the king and he wants to make a good impression.
00:45 - 00:47
So he tells the king my daughter can turn
00:48 - 00:51
straw into gold, she can make gold from nothing.
00:52 - 00:55
The king is very impressed and wants to see this for himself.
00:55 - 00:59
So they bring over the girl who has no option
00:59 - 01:02
but to come and present herself to the king,
01:02 - 01:06
obey what she is told by her father and now by the king telling
01:06 - 01:11
her you must turn all of this straw that I have here into gold.
01:11 - 01:13
Otherwise you'll be punished,
01:13 - 01:14
which is
01:14 - 01:18
um not even her fault, but she has nothing to do for it. So
01:19 - 01:23
she sits there trying to do something but there's nothing she can do.
01:23 - 01:24
So she starts crying
01:25 - 01:31
to her help comes a magical being that she didn't expect
01:31 - 01:36
a person that does not introduce himself but looks very strange.
01:37 - 01:41
Uh And he claims to be magic and that he can turn the gold for her.
01:41 - 01:43
She can turn the straw into gold.
01:43 - 01:46
So she agrees and tells him yes, please help her.
01:46 - 01:54
Um But this only makes the king one more gold. So he, she, he tells her again
01:54 - 01:57
tonight, you're going to make more gold for me
01:57 - 01:59
and the room.
01:59 - 02:04
Um And again, the woman, she has no other choice but to obey the king
02:04 - 02:05
um
02:06 - 02:10
or suffer the consequences, which could be very bad. But
02:10 - 02:13
and again, the gnome helps her
02:13 - 02:16
um without asking for anything.
02:16 - 02:20
And the third night, the third time that the king comes back and says, well,
02:20 - 02:25
since you've proven that you can do this, if you can fill one more room
02:25 - 02:28
with the gold, then I will marry you
02:28 - 02:33
because he of course, doesn't want to let go of this woman who can produce gold.
02:33 - 02:38
Um The woman again uh sees that this is a very big opportunity,
02:38 - 02:42
but she is still not able to make any gold for herself.
02:42 - 02:46
So she's at the mercy of the gnome who was trying to help her.
02:46 - 02:51
But the third time that he comes over, he says he's not going to do it for free.
02:51 - 02:55
He wants something in repayment. He wants something back
02:55 - 03:00
and she offers wealth because she's going to marry the king or Lance.
03:00 - 03:03
And the gnome doesn't want any of that. He says he wants
03:03 - 03:08
his, her first child, the first baby that she has with the king.
03:08 - 03:14
The woman thinking that that was not going to happen, that she would find another way
03:14 - 03:17
and trying to get away from the situation, then
03:17 - 03:19
promises that she will bring
03:19 - 03:22
um that she will give him the baby when she has one.
03:23 - 03:29
So, um the gnome goes back and turns all of this straw into gold
03:29 - 03:34
and the king is very impressed, of course, and he fulfills his promise of marrying
03:34 - 03:35
the beautiful woman.
03:36 - 03:41
And after time goes by, she does have a child by the king.
03:42 - 03:46
Uh All of this time they never heard back from the gnome until the baby
03:46 - 03:49
was born when the gnome comes back and says,
03:49 - 03:51
ok, now I want my payment
03:51 - 03:54
and the woman is again desperate, um,
03:54 - 03:58
from a situation she had gotten into and doesn't know how to do about this.
03:58 - 04:00
So she begs and um
04:01 - 04:05
tells the gnome to please forgive the dead or give something else.
04:05 - 04:08
And he tells her because he's very tricky that
04:08 - 04:12
he'll forgive her if she guesses his name because
04:12 - 04:14
she never asked and he never gave it.
04:14 - 04:18
So if she guesses his name, he, she can have her baby.
04:18 - 04:21
This woman tries to um
04:21 - 04:25
fine by many means guessing giving him names.
04:25 - 04:29
She sends her um her um workers through the
04:29 - 04:33
town to the kingdom to find different names.
04:34 - 04:39
Until finally one of her guards finds in a very, very remote mountain
04:39 - 04:40
um
04:40 - 04:43
where no one used to live.
04:43 - 04:47
Um He finds the gnome celebrating on his own
04:47 - 04:51
um saying that she would never guess his name is actually Rumples
04:52 - 04:55
Stinkin. So the gnome by celebrating before time
04:56 - 04:59
ends up giving up his name. When someone was listening,
05:00 - 05:03
the guard comes back and tells now the queen
05:03 - 05:06
um about this and she's able to keep her baby.
05:07 - 05:11
So this detail really has a lot of uh things that we can learn from.
05:11 - 05:13
First of all, obviously
05:13 - 05:16
not um getting
05:16 - 05:18
involved into lies
05:19 - 05:22
uh or saying that we can do something that cannot
05:22 - 05:26
be done or getting into promises that we cannot fulfill.
05:26 - 05:32
Also seeing the people um here like the Miller and the king that are
05:32 - 05:38
very greedy. They don't care about other people but how to get more gold.
05:39 - 05:39
Um
05:39 - 05:43
And all of these things that they try to do, try to
05:44 - 05:48
make up an image of who they are and what they can have.
05:48 - 05:51
It's only for show but not really
05:51 - 05:52
helping each other.
05:53 - 05:55
So in the end, um
05:55 - 05:59
the beautiful woman and the king end up having
05:59 - 06:06
a life that is good. Thanks to the gnome that got tricked by himself.
06:06 - 06:07
Thank you very much.
