  1. Lord of the Flies versus the rial life Tongan shipwreck
  2. in a defensive human nature.
  3. Since its publication, Lord of the Flies has been considered
  4. a brilliant take on human nature.
  5. But why have we given too much weight?
  6. Toe? One novel that was written during one of the
  7. world's darkest times.
  8. William Golding was born in 1911 and lived through both
  9. world wars and fought in the second.
  10. As a child, he was a bully and admittedly enjoyed
  11. hurting people.
  12. He was an alcoholic and suffered from depression his whole
  13. life. Golding found inspiration for his novels fighting for Great
  14. Britain in World War Two.
  15. It was during this war that he formed the opinion
  16. that man produces evil as a bee produces honey.
  17. He also admitting Toe admitted to understanding the Nazis because
  18. he was of a similar nature.
  19. All of his novel share the same dark view of
  20. human nature.
  21. The characters in Lord of the Flies were all young
  22. schoolboys. A few important ones are Valve, Piggy and Jack.
  23. In the novel, the boy survived a plane crash and
  24. ended up on a deserted island.
  25. They selected Ralph is their leader and made plans to
  26. stay organized, but this did not last fall.
  27. They plan to keep a fire going constantly and hopes
  28. that a boat would see the smoke and rescue them.
  29. The keepers of the fire, however, abandoned their posts to
  30. hunt, and the fire became less of a priority.
  31. While it was out, a ship passed the island, many
  32. of the boys, but by Jack, became obsessed with hunting.
  33. The more they hunted pigs, the more bloodthirsty they became.
  34. Once, in a violent rage, they killed a boy named
  35. Simon, imagining that he was a beast.
  36. Eventually, all of the boys, except for Piggy left valve
  37. to follow Jack.
  38. When Ralph and Piggy tried to restore order, Jack and
  39. his followers killed.
  40. Picky, then destroyed the island with fire, trying to hunt
  41. Ralph. A Navy ship saw the island enveloped in flames,
  42. and the boys rescuers found them in the midst of
  43. their war.
  44. Three boys did not survive their time on the island.
  45. A boy with the birthmark on his face was lost
  46. on one of the first nights, and Simon and Piggy
  47. were murdered by the other boys.
  48. When the officers found them, Ralph wept for the end
  49. of innocents in the darkness of man's heart.
  50. In 1965 a Tongan shipwreck left six boys sigh, own
  51. Stephen, David Lieu, Coehlo and Mono, ages 13 to 15
  52. stranded on a deserted island and then went a lot
  53. differently. The shipwreck occurred when the boys tried to escape
  54. their boarding school on a stolen boat.
  55. They got caught in a storm, drifted for eight days
  56. and finally landed on the deserted island of Fatah.
  57. After arriving, the boy set up a structured schedule, working
  58. in pairs to garden, cook and keep watch.
  59. They had the same idea as the boys and Lord
  60. of the Flies to keep a fire going but executed
  61. it much better.
  62. The fire ran constantly day and night until they were
  63. rescued. Life on the island was very difficult, but the
  64. boys managed to keep order.
  65. They used timeouts to punish each other when there was
  66. fighting. They not only set up areas for storing food
  67. and collecting rainwater for drinking, but they also built a
  68. gym, complete with makeshift waits.
  69. In a badminton court, they built a guitar and set
  70. aside time for daily song and prayer.
  71. After 15 months on the island, Captain Peter Warner saw
  72. their fire and went to investigate.
  73. He found the boys healthy, un injured and, most importantly,
  74. alive. Their families, who had already had funerals for them,
  75. rejoiced. The six boys in the captain all remained friends
  76. long after the rescue.
  77. In conclusion, I think we should give more weight to
  78. what this true story says about human nature than Lord
  79. of the Flies.
  80. Humans are capable of terrible things and, unfortunately, golden experience.
  81. Golding experience the worst of that.
  82. But overall, I believe people are naturally inclined to good,
  83. and the story of the Tongan castaways is proof of
