  1. Hello, I'm Shannon. But right. And this is my case study for edu 452.
  2. Now, my case studies on a little boy named Taylor,
  3. he is a six year old male and he's in a first grade general education classroom.
  4. Now, Taylor is a student that has autism spectrum disorder.
  5. He
  6. has difficulty in following directions listening,
  7. um staying in his designated area
  8. and he has some social emotional concerns.
  9. Also,
  10. it has been observed that he does not
  11. interact well with his peers or appropriate
  12. appropriately with them.
  13. Now, according to his screening that was taken in kindergarten from Fast Bridge,
  14. um Taylor scored in the second percentile with reading and writing
  15. at that time, he could read no side words, he knew no letters or sounds.
  16. Um,
  17. he couldn't even write his name according to his kindergarten assessments.
  18. And by the time he started first grade
  19. Taylor was writing his name, but he was reversing some letters, you know,
  20. writing them backwards.
  21. He could identify 20 uppercase
  22. and 19 lower case letters and only new seven
  23. sounds as of August 7th of the school year.
  24. Uh
  25. The only sad word he was identifying was I
  26. now Taylor enjoys playing on his tablet
  27. and watching youtube videos. And those videos include things like Mr Beast
  28. for characters called Speaker Man TV, man
  29. toilet head or something.
  30. And also he likes to watch uh
  31. videos about this puppet named Jeffy.
  32. Now, Jeffy is a disabled puppet
  33. and they're kind of poking fun at
  34. persons with disabilities.
  35. Um
  36. but not only that these videos I believe are
  37. inappropriate for a six year old child to be watching
  38. because
  39. one thing is their violence there,
  40. they use words that are not appropriate for smaller
  41. Children to listen to or to say themselves.
  42. And Taylor has a tendency to act out these things that he sees in these
  43. videos when he interacts with his peers or even when he's sitting in a classroom,
  44. when we're trying to do a writing assignment,
  45. this is what Taylor wants to write about.
  46. Here's one of his samples. Now
  47. Taylor was asked, what do you want to write about?
  48. This is one of his independent writing
  49. uh
  50. during writing workshop and
  51. this is his and he has a combinations where he can copy what is written
  52. and he tells me his shadow what he wants to write. I write it down and
  53. this is the result of him copying what he told me to write
  54. TV. Man, TV. Man has
  55. a
  56. TV, for his head.
  57. He is a Titan and he protects others. Now, the character to your bottom left is TV.
  58. Man.
  59. The one beside it up top is speaker man.
  60. And over to your right. That is toilet head or toilet man.
  61. He's evil.
  62. That's who speaker man protects us from.
  63. Now. The data I collected on Taylor started August 7th. Um,
  64. with this letter chart,
  65. I would flash random letters at him whether they be uppercase or lowercase
  66. and if he would get it right. I could check if he did it.
  67. If it was incorrect, he would get a minus
  68. and then I would count the number of correct.
  69. And
  70. on
  71. a seven,
  72. you can see he had 20 out of 26 uppercase,
  73. 19 out of 26 lower case
  74. and only seven sounds.
  75. If you follow along, I did for more
  76. on this page
  77. and um they were not consistent or Taylor didn't seem to be
  78. uh
  79. wanting to participate.
  80. And on
  81. October 30th, I did another assessment
  82. where he knew 24 uppercase 25 lowercase and 18 sounds.
  83. So
  84. the consistency is not
  85. relatively there,
  86. but I believe it's more or less of him wanting to do
  87. the work.
  88. He has progress because here's
  89. a
  90. assessment with the alphabet recognition chart
  91. point to letter, he
  92. tells you the letter
  93. upper case, he only missed two lower case, he missed three.
  94. But those are the three that are most
  95. difficult for some Children because they all look similar.
  96. And if you notice there's two different GS
  97. in that set,
  98. now here's a side
  99. word assessment for five K
  100. these are words that Children in kindergarten should know by the
  101. end of the first quarter or the first nine weeks.
  102. Now, here's Taylor that was given to him on October 26th.
  103. And at this time, he got 13 out of 5656 words correct.
  104. And which give him a 20%
  105. accuracy rating.
  106. And it was given to him again on November 17th where he
  107. increased to 25 out of 56 words
  108. correctly
  109. and
  110. a 44% accuracy
  111. we are working towards getting
  112. up there. But then this here is a
  113. simple writing page for them to do.
  114. They look at the picture,
  115. this is about short eye sounds OK?
  116. And you look at the picture like say
  117. the little girl sitting, she's, it's sit
  118. as you can see he did get that but his
  119. are backwards.
  120. Now, the next one is the number six
  121. Taylor did not do well with sounding or decoding that word to write it out.
  122. So he does not
  123. write the letter that he's making the sound for.
  124. Now, the data with alphabet recognition,
  125. you can see that he is. Taylor has shown some growth
  126. um with his upper and lower case letters and
  127. and it sounds
  128. so his support strategies
  129. are there
  130. to aid him in his success.
  131. And
  132. he knows if he sees a check comes on that page, he got it correctly
  133. and he said, oh my God, they're right. He'll smile, he'll laugh.
  134. So he knows if he does it right.
  135. He's going to get rewarded because at the end of each assessment,
  136. I will let him have a few minute break um with his little break box
  137. that he gets,
  138. you know, to keep him focused when it's time to do a task.
  139. Also, with the sight word recognition, you'll see, he has made an increase
  140. in growth
  141. and I feel it's because of the increase of his phonic phonemic awareness.
  142. His letter recognition, his sounds that has helped the growth with his sight words
  143. because he went from
  144. hardly no letters and sounds at the beginning of the year
  145. to
  146. almost half or over half,
  147. which also increases that word from 1% to 44%
  148. in the first nine weeks.
  149. And also, I've attached a behavior assessment
  150. where he has redirects within a 20 minute time period
  151. and
  152. I observe them during general education, reading block
  153. and speech therapy twice.
  154. And if you notice
  155. he has more difficulty staying in his seated area in his area,
  156. um
  157. His use of inappropriate words has decreased tremendously
  158. because
  159. we did have more issues with that last year.
  160. Um
  161. His remaining on task has improved because of the brake boxes we're using.
  162. Um, but he doesn't like to take turns as well. Either
  163. if it's another student's turn to go to the white board,
  164. Taylor will jump up and answer or just pick random answers on the board.
  165. If he feels like you know he wants to.
  166. So we're going to work on that as well
  167. as his goals.
  168. Um
  169. Taylor's, we're working toward lessening
  170. his support,
  171. which is me
  172. and to maximize his independence. So, um
  173. while we're doing this,
  174. I will give him assessments to do what to do
  175. on his own without any cues or prompts for me.
  176. And um also
  177. we're gonna work on writing those letters, why he tells me what they are.
  178. And I believe all this will help with his soft
  179. word recognition
  180. and in
  181. building these foundational skills, it will help with his writing as well.
  182. So we got some side
  183. books we're going to use.
  184. Each book consists of two side words in each book.
  185. Um
  186. They are simple little level eight books that he's going to be reading.
  187. And right now, um he gets a lot of help with those,
  188. these that word books for kindergarten level,
  189. uh high frequency words are
  190. like get we like look
  191. help.
  192. Uh
  193. So we're gonna work on increasing
  194. though. So his goal is to go from zero words recognized
  195. to 28 by the end of the semester. Now we're at 26. So we've almost reached that goal.
  196. So we're going to have to up that goal um
  197. before this
  198. week is up because
  199. I feel he will reach that goal before
  200. the second nine weeks or the semester is up
  201. and are also working towards him reading
  202. level a book independently without any help.
  203. From me without any prompts or cues.
  204. We also have goals for his behavior
  205. where we're going to work towards him to remain focused or seated. And
  206. during the whole
  207. entire 20 minute lesson,
  208. we're less than those prompts or redirect.
  209. And um
  210. so that he can get through a task or a lesson
  211. in one sitting.
  212. Now, here's my action plan
  213. and our skills to develop is going to be fluency, decoding automaticity
  214. materials are those
  215. that box of side words right there. The books,
  216. um the little side word readers,
  217. each book contains two side words, each like I've mentioned.
  218. And um
  219. it has a little assessment pages in there as well where you can practice writing them
  220. or identify them in a group of words.
  221. So we're gonna work, use those
  222. with Taylor.
  223. But our strategy we're gonna use is uh the point your finger
  224. because
  225. to help him follow along with the words,
  226. he's got to point to the words as he's reading them.
  227. And also if he has trouble decoding a word, he can point to each individual letter.
  228. That's why we're going to work on those letter
  229. skills so he can decode words in his reading.
  230. Now, I will demonstrate, pointing to each word for him.
  231. First, we will do two books a week
  232. and while we're reading, I'll point to the word,
  233. we read it more than once, I'll point to it
  234. as we're reading along.
  235. And then the next time when he reads the book.
  236. He's going to be the one point to it with help from me.
  237. And then maybe the next day I'll say, ok,
  238. let's grab a book
  239. I want you to read to me and then he'll
  240. be responsible to do it on his own or independently
  241. and follow along the sliding of the corner finger
  242. at each word.
  243. And that's what our directions and procedures will be.
  244. He will be presented with two level eight books
  245. containing two new high frequency words. Each week,
  246. I will read the book with him
  247. to demonstrate our model, how it's done.
  248. He can follow along
  249. and then um
  250. we'll work together
  251. doing the same thing pointing to the words, decoding the words
  252. and then he will be reading independently
  253. um to demonstrate that he has a knowledge and understanding of the standard.
  254. Now the assessments will be
  255. me monitoring him while he reads through these books
  256. independently.
  257. And
  258. I will assess if he reads it fluently how well he decodes the words if he has
  259. a struggle and I want him to do it with little to no assistance and with automaticity.
  260. Now, my conclusion on this is and reflect is
  261. I believe the purpose of this study was to observe and assess where Taylor was at
  262. both academically and behaviorally
  263. in a general education setting.
  264. Um The next steps would be to implement the strategies and the,
  265. and the
  266. goals that I've set in this
  267. case study for him
  268. we're gonna work toward those goals.
  269. Taylor is an emergent reader. He is starting to get there,
  270. but he needs those foundational skills built up
  271. and to help him grow
  272. in his reading and writing capabilities.
  273. If he cannot recognize the letters and sounds, he cannot decode the words.
  274. And if he can't read the words, then he won't be able to write the words.
  275. So we're going to work on his writing skills as well with those letters.
  276. And um
  277. you know, if he doesn't build these skills,
  278. he's going to continue to struggle and fall
  279. even further behind.
  280. I believe he can achieve these goals
  281. with this action plan from the study.
  282. But I also feel like it's not just at school that
  283. need to be done,
  284. I believe
  285. the club,
  286. not, not just in the classroom, the collaboration of
  287. the staff that he works with his speech, his teacher, his aid
  288. and also at home with his parents.
  289. So
  290. I, because I feel it my job
  291. as a para
  292. professional or aid for him
  293. is I'm supposed to help the teacher provide
  294. him with every opportunity to learn and grow
  295. in
  296. his reading and writing. And it's going to take time to gather this information
  297. to come up with that plan
  298. and implement the plan.
  299. It's gonna be a lot of time
  300. to do this, but it's gonna be time well spent
  301. as long as
  302. Taylor succeeds
