  1. Hey Boys and Girls.
  2. Here is chapter eight from Tales of 1/4 grade Nothing.
  3. The T.
  4. V. Star.
  5. Aunt linda is my mother's sister.
  6. She lives in boston last week she had a baby
  7. girl. So now I have a cousin.
  8. My mother decided to fly to boston.
  9. See Aunt linda and the new baby.
  10. I'll only be gone for the weekend.
  11. My mother told me I was sitting on her bed
  12. watching her pack.
  13. I know I said daddy will take care of you
  14. and fudge.
  15. I know.
  16. I said again, are you sure you'll be all right?
  17. She asked me.
  18. Sure why not?
  19. Will you help daddy with fudge?
  20. Sure mom, don't worry, I'm not worrying.
  21. It's just that daddy is so well you know he
  22. doesn't know much about taking care of Children.
  23. Then she closed her suitcase.
  24. We'll be fine mom.
  25. I said I was really looking forward to the weekend.
  26. My father doesn't care about keeping things neat, he never
  27. examines to me to see if I'm clean and he
  28. lets me stay up late on friday morning, all four
  29. of us rode down in the elevator to say goodbye
  30. to my mother.
  31. Henry looked at the suitcase.
  32. You're going away, Mr Hatcher?
  33. He asked.
  34. My mother answered.
  35. No I am Henry.
  36. My sister just had her first baby.
  37. I'm flying to boston for the weekend to help out
  38. new baby.
  39. Fike said baby, baby baby, nobody paid any attention to
  40. him sometimes my brother just talks to hear the sound
  41. of his own voice.
  42. I have a nice visit, Mrs Hatcher Henry told my
  43. mother when we reached the lobby.
  44. Thank you Henry.
  45. My mother said, keep an eye on my family for
  46. me. We'll do mrs Hatcher Henry said, giving my father
  47. a wink outside.
  48. My father hailed a taxi.
  49. He put the suitcase in first, then held the door
  50. for my mother When she was settled in the cab,
  51. my father said don't worry about us, will be just
  52. fine, just fine.
  53. Just fine mommy for Jill.
  54. Bye mom!
  55. See you sunday, I said, my mother blew us kisses,
  56. then her cab drove away my father's side while funds
  57. jumped up and down, calling bye mommy, bye bye bye.
  58. I had no school that day.
  59. The teachers were at a special meeting so my father
  60. said he'd take me and fudge to the office with
  61. him. My father's office is in a huge building made
  62. of almost all last.
  63. It's really a busy place.
  64. You never see people just sitting quietly at desks.
  65. Everyone's always rushing around.
  66. A person could get lost in there.
  67. My father has a private office and his own secretary.
  68. Her name is Janet and she's very pretty.
  69. I especially like her hair, it's thick and black.
  70. She has the longest eyelashes I've ever seen once.
  71. I heard my mother say Janet must have to get
  72. up all the crack of dawn to put on her
  73. face. My father just laughed when my mother said it,
  74. Janet seen me before, but this was her first meeting
  75. with fudge.
  76. I was glad his hair was finally growing back.
  77. I explained right off about his teeth.
  78. He'll look a lot better when he's older and I
  79. said He knocked out his front too.
  80. But when he's six or 7 he'll get new ones.
  81. See if I'd said opening his mouth all gone.
  82. My father said Janet, the boys are going to be
  83. here for the morning, can you amuse them while I
  84. clear up some work?
  85. Certainly. Mrs mr Hatcher Janet said, you go ahead into
  86. your office and I'll take the boys on a tour
  87. of the rest of the agency.
  88. As soon as my father went into his private office,
  89. Janet took out her pocketbook, she reached in and came
  90. up with a hairbrush, some lipstick in the bag of
  91. crackers, want some.
  92. She asked me in fudge.
  93. Okay, I said taking a handful fudge did the same.
  94. The crackers were shaped like little goldfish.
  95. I nibbled while Janet fixed herself up.
  96. She had a big folding mirror on her desk drawer.
  97. She said it on top of her desk and went
  98. to work on herself.
  99. When she was finished.
  100. She looked exactly the same as when we came in.
  101. But I guess she didn't think so because she said
  102. that's much better.
  103. Then she put all her stuff away and took me
  104. by one hand and fudge by the other.
  105. We walked down a long hole through a doorway and
  106. into another section of the agency.
  107. We came to a room where there were a bunch
  108. of kids with mothers.
  109. I guess there were at least 50 of them.
  110. Most of the kids were kind of small like fudge.
  111. Some were crying.
  112. Is this a nursery school or what?
  113. I asked Janet, she laughed.
  114. They're here to try out for the new title bike
  115. commercial. You mean they all want to be the kid
  116. who rides the taliban like on tv.
  117. Yes well at least their mothers want them to be
  118. picked, Janet said but we can only use one.
  119. You mean only one out of all these kids is
  120. going to be picked.
  121. That's right, Janice said, who picks him?
  122. I asked your father and mr Den Burg are doing
  123. it but of course Mr Vincent, the president of Total
  124. bike company has to approve.
  125. Just then a door opened and the secretary came out
  126. next she called to the waiting kids.
  127. My Murray's next.
  128. A mother said, oh no he's not another mother called
  129. Sally is next ladies please, you'll have a turn, the
  130. secretary said, Murray got to be next.
  131. He was a little redheaded kid, he wasn't in the
  132. other room for two minutes when the door opened in,
  133. a big man with a cigar in his mouth came
  134. out, No, no, no, he shouted, he's not the type
  135. at all mary was crying, his mother yelled at the
  136. big man, what do you know any way you wouldn't
  137. know a Treasury if you found one?
  138. She shook her fist at him, Janet whispered it to
  139. me that's Mr Vincent, the president of Total bike.
  140. Mr Vincent walked to the center of the room, He
  141. looked around at all the kids.
  142. When he looked over at us he pointed and called,
  143. There he is, that's the kid I want.
  144. I thought he meant me, I got excited, I could
  145. just see myself on tv writing the total bike all
  146. my friends would turn on their sets and say, hey
  147. look there's peter while I was thinking about what fun
  148. it would be if Mr Mr Vincent came over to
  149. us and grabbed fudge.
  150. He lifted him up, perfect, he cried, he's perfect.
  151. The mothers who were waiting, packed up their kids and
  152. left right away.
  153. Mr Vincent took off with fudge in his arms.
  154. Janet chased him, she called, but Mr Vincent, you don't
  155. understand. I ran after Janet.
  156. Mr Vincent carried fudge into the other room, he announced,
  157. I found him myself, the perfect kid to ride the
  158. title bike in my new commercial.
  159. Mr Vincent put fudge down and took the cigar out
  160. of his mouth.
  161. There were two other men in the room, one of
  162. them was Mr Den Burg.
  163. The other one was my father.
  164. Hi daddy, fight said George.
  165. My father told Mr Vincent, this is my son.
  166. He's no actor or model.
  167. He can't make your title by commercial.
  168. He doesn't have to be an actor or a model,
  169. He's perfect the way he is.
  170. Mr Vincent insisted.
  171. Now look, George, we want to make the best possible
  172. commercial for your company.
  173. But fudge can't be the boy to ride the total
  174. bike. Now you listen, Hatcher Mr Vincent raised his voice.
  175. I wondered why he called my father.
  176. Hatcher just like Mr Garvey did.
  177. He pointed to fudge.
  178. Either that kid rides my title bike or I take
  179. my account to another advertising agency.
  180. It's that simple.
  181. My father looked at Mr Denberg, What's your decision?
  182. Warren Mr Den Burg told my father, I don't want
  183. to be the one to tell you what to do.
  184. My father picked up fudge and held him on his
  185. lap. Would you like to ride the title bike fudge.
  186. It's just like the one you have at home.
  187. Why are you asking him?
  188. I said, what does he know about making commercials?
  189. My father acted like he'd forgotten.
  190. I was even around, I'm thinking peter he said, please
  191. be quiet.
  192. Well Hatcher Mr Vincent said, what will it be this
  193. kid of yours or do I move on to another
  194. agency? I remembered how my father lost the juicio account
  195. because of fudge.
  196. Now maybe he'd lose this one too, and I don't
  197. think he could afford that.
  198. Finally my my father said, all right, George.
  199. You can use him on one condition though.
  200. What's that?
  201. Hatcher Mr Vincent asked the commercial has to be made
  202. this afternoon after today.
  203. My son fudge won't be available.
  204. That's fine with me.
  205. Hatcher Mr Vincent said, is he going to get paid?
  206. I asked my father, I'll worry about that.
  207. Peter my father said that probably meant yes, he'd be
  208. paid and have lots of money in the bank.
  209. I'd have nothing and someday I'd have to borrow from
  210. him. No, wait a minute.
  211. Never. I'll never borrow money from fudge.
  212. I'll starve first.
  213. Can I at least watch when you make the commercial?
  214. I asked.
  215. Well, certainly my father said you can watch the whole
  216. thing. I turned to Mr Den Burg will fight to
  217. be famous.
  218. I asked.
  219. No, not famous, but a lot of people will think
  220. he looks familiar.
  221. Mr Den Burg said, I turned to Mr Vincent, do
  222. you know he has no front top teeth.
  223. Well that's part of his charm, Mr Vincent said, and
  224. he cut off all his hair two months ago.
  225. Well, he looks fine now.
  226. Mr Vincent said, and he can't even talk in long
  227. sentences yet.
  228. I told everyone in the room, he doesn't have to
  229. say a word.
  230. Mr Vincent told me I couldn't think of any other
  231. reason why Mr Vincent shouldn't use fudge.
  232. In his total by commercial, it was settled.
  233. Soon, fudge would be a famous television star and I
  234. would be playing Old Peter Hatcher, fourth grade.
  235. Nothing. Let's begin.
  236. Right after lunch.
  237. Mr Den Burg said we should get it filmed in
  238. about two hours while my father and Mr Den Burg
  239. worked out all of the arrangements.
  240. I asked Janet where the men's room was.
  241. She walked me to it.
  242. I told her thank you and that she didn't have
  243. to wait.
  244. I'd find my own way back When I was safely
  245. inside. I looked at myself in the mirror.
  246. I wish fudge had never been born.
  247. I thought everything good always happens to him.
  248. If he had to be born, I wish he could
  249. be nine or 10 like me then Mr Vincent wouldn't
  250. want him to be on one ride on the shuttle
  251. on his title by commercial Janet sat down to Janet
  252. sent down to the coffee shop for some sandwich.
  253. There's a sandwiches and drinks after we ate, we all
  254. walked to the other section of the agency where the
  255. cameras were set up a make believe street scene was
  256. the background.
  257. The total bike was shiny red.
  258. My father told fudge.
  259. All he had to do was riding around fudge like
  260. that. He zoomed all over the place, room, room room,
  261. he called my father.
  262. Mr Vincent and Janet sat unfolding chairs and watched the
  263. action. I sat on the floor at my father's side.
  264. Mr Den Berg was the director.
  265. He said, okay, Futch, we're ready to begin now.
  266. You ride the title bike where I tell you to
  267. and I'll take a picture of you doing it.
  268. All right, no fights said, What does he mean?
  269. Hatcher? Mr Vincent asked.
  270. Why did he say no, my father groaned.
  271. Look, George using fudge.
  272. Was your idea not mine?
  273. Mr Den Burg tried again.
  274. Okay, fudge, This is it, the cameraman said, start writing
  275. this way ready, set, go fudge.
  276. Sat there on the total bike, but he wouldn't peddle.
  277. Come on kid, let's go.
  278. The cameraman called.
  279. No, don't want to fudge, answered.
  280. What's with this kid?
  281. Mr Hatcher, the cameraman asked fudge.
  282. My father said, do you do what the nice man
  283. tells you to know.
  284. Don't have to Janet, whispered to my father, how about
  285. some cookies, Mr Hatcher, Good idea Janet.
  286. My father told her.
  287. All right, Boys and girls, that's the end of Part
  288. one. This is a bit of a longer chapter.
  289. Uh, so you can stop this recording now and go
  290. ahead and watch the second video by Mhm.
