00:02 - 00:03
Let's talk about punctuation.
00:05 - 00:07
There's three major purposes to punctuation.
00:08 - 00:11
See there to end a sentence or simply thought to
00:11 - 00:17
combine complete sentences and were to emphasize lists and ideas.
00:19 - 00:21
I narrowed it down to three functions for the sake
00:21 - 00:21
of simplification.
00:23 - 00:26
So if we look at the first one, the punctuation
00:26 - 00:27
marks that end sentences.
00:28 - 00:31
We're gonna be looking at periods, question marks and exclamation
00:31 - 00:36
points. The period is the simplest punctuation mark.
00:36 - 00:39
It is there could to complete a but or a
00:39 - 00:44
sentence. Examples are I was sleeping a hatch to stay
00:44 - 00:46
awake. Fish travel in schools.
00:47 - 00:50
Whales travel in pods, snow, white, light lead.
00:51 - 00:52
She has a bad habit of being tardy.
00:53 - 00:57
All of these air simple sentences or independent clauses, as
00:57 - 00:58
we talked about last week.
01:02 - 01:07
Question marks and exclamation points thes also and sentences the
01:07 - 01:09
question mark off horses there.
01:09 - 01:12
When you're asking the brush in such as you brought
01:12 - 01:13
me ice cream.
01:14 - 01:17
The exclamation there is to emphasize excitement or emotion in
01:17 - 01:17
a sentence.
01:18 - 01:19
I love ice cream.
01:24 - 01:28
Now let's move on to how we combine sentences, and
01:29 - 01:31
there's two things that we can use for this.
01:31 - 01:33
We can use commas, and we can use semi colons.
01:34 - 01:38
Semi colons are tricky to master, but they're actually pretty
01:38 - 01:41
simple. Want to get the hang of in Hamas air
01:41 - 01:44
more complicated because they have way more rules and great
01:45 - 01:49
areas. But let's get started on these four major functions.
01:51 - 01:53
Teoh. It allows you to create a list or more
01:54 - 01:54
within a sentence.
01:55 - 01:59
It allows you to introduce elements to a sentence or
01:59 - 02:00
use introductory elements.
02:00 - 02:05
Innocent is it allows you to add information or details,
02:07 - 02:11
and when you're using, coordinate conjunctions such as four and
02:12 - 02:16
nor but or get so um, the comments will allow
02:16 - 02:17
you to combine sentences.
02:18 - 02:20
So let's take a look at the very first function
02:20 - 02:23
lists. Here's two examples.
02:24 - 02:27
Sam's favorite sports are basketball, soccer and volleyball.
02:28 - 02:31
This sentence list three sports the commas air.
02:31 - 02:33
They're two separate each sport from one another.
02:34 - 02:39
The next one Sam Celebrity crushes are Chadwick, Boseman, Chris
02:40 - 02:42
Events, Free Larson and the video Go.
02:43 - 02:46
These are four names that are listed as well as
02:46 - 02:47
Sam celebrity crushes.
02:48 - 02:50
The comments were there to help you separate and identify
02:51 - 02:59
each of these celebrities, introductory elements or things that come
02:59 - 03:02
before sentence so they introduce a sentence.
03:03 - 03:04
This example we have.
03:05 - 03:09
In the 19 fifties, a Texas town named Lolita almost
03:09 - 03:12
changed its name to avoid being associated with the controversial
03:13 - 03:16
novel. Now you can pretty much say the same sentience
03:17 - 03:19
without the very beginning, but the beginning is there to
03:20 - 03:20
give you context.
03:21 - 03:24
This is talking about the 19 fifties, the second sentence.
03:25 - 03:27
Once upon a time, you confined grizzly bears in California.
03:29 - 03:32
Once again, you could pretty much start the sentence with
03:32 - 03:35
You could find Chris leaders in California, but without the
03:36 - 03:38
once upon a time you're not getting a sense of
03:38 - 03:41
when you were able to find receivers in California.
03:42 - 03:45
This is important because you most certainly can't find these
03:45 - 03:46
bears here today.
03:47 - 03:50
But if you start the sentence with once upon a
03:50 - 03:52
time, it gives you the idea that this is something
03:53 - 03:55
that happened a long time ago is something that was
03:55 - 03:56
true a long time ago.
03:57 - 03:59
That's why these introductory elements can be important.
04:03 - 04:03
Added descriptions.
04:05 - 04:07
My brother, who is a pain in my butt, snitched
04:08 - 04:09
on me now.
04:09 - 04:15
Additional description is the very center of this sentence who
04:15 - 04:16
is a pain in my butt.
04:17 - 04:20
That's because you can pretty much read dissensions with my
04:20 - 04:22
brother snitched on me, and this makes perfect sense.
04:23 - 04:26
The commas allow you to add something in the middle
04:27 - 04:30
to give you a little bit more understanding, which provide
04:30 - 04:31
a little bit of a deeper explanation.
04:32 - 04:36
So if I say my brother snitched on me versus
04:37 - 04:38
my brother, who is a pain in my butt snitched
04:39 - 04:39
on me.
04:40 - 04:43
If you look at the second sample, the one with
04:43 - 04:46
the added information, we might get the sense that maybe
04:46 - 04:48
my brother has finished on me more than once.
04:49 - 04:53
Now, the second example I have here, parts of the
04:53 - 04:57
movie Oklahoma, which was a huge hit in 1955 were
04:57 - 05:00
actually filmed in Arizona again.
05:01 - 05:05
Read it without the middle section hardsub movie child of
05:05 - 05:08
the movie Oklahoma were actually filmed in Arizona.
05:09 - 05:13
The center just gives you a little bit more information
05:14 - 05:17
about the year and how popular it waas, so it's
05:17 - 05:21
providing more context Now.
05:22 - 05:26
The very last being were functioning with Mama has is
05:27 - 05:27
combining sentences.
05:29 - 05:31
Uh, you can't just use a comma and combine to
05:31 - 05:32
complete sentences.
05:33 - 05:34
You need to have coordinating conjunctions.
05:36 - 05:39
That means words like four and nor but or yet
05:40 - 05:43
and so so Let's take a look at this.
05:47 - 05:49
I use these examples of simple sentences.
05:49 - 05:50
Earlier, I was sleepy.
05:51 - 05:52
I had to stay away.
05:53 - 05:56
You can combine those two sentences by simply saying obviously
05:57 - 05:59
B comma, but I had to stay your weight.
06:00 - 06:04
The same thing goes for fish travel in schools, comma
06:04 - 06:06
and whales travel in pods.
06:08 - 06:10
The common is there and it's allowing you to combine
06:10 - 06:12
sentences. But you need to make sure that you have
06:13 - 06:17
a coordinated conjunction or one of the band boys.
06:19 - 06:21
Um, if you need more examples of this, please let
06:22 - 06:24
me know and I will gladly give you more examples.
06:25 - 06:28
Ad help You master this but one of the ways
06:29 - 06:31
in which I try to help master this the same.
06:32 - 06:35
Identify all of the sentences that can stand alone and
06:36 - 06:37
you'll be able to see that the thing that they
06:37 - 06:41
have in common in the center are the Kama and
06:41 - 06:41
the conjunction.
06:48 - 06:49
Right? Next, we have semi colons.
06:50 - 06:53
I only provided you with one example of this the
06:53 - 06:57
semi colon, who binds to complete sentences that it's pressed
06:57 - 06:57
the same idea.
06:58 - 07:00
So again I'm repeating a sentience I used earlier.
07:01 - 07:02
Snow White arrived.
07:02 - 07:05
Wait, she has a bad habit of the target.
07:06 - 07:09
In this case, the semi colon is ending the first
07:10 - 07:13
sentence and pretty much adding the she has a bad
07:13 - 07:16
habit of being tardy as an extension of that idea.
07:17 - 07:26
Snow White is always late, so let's take a look.
07:26 - 07:29
Finally, at Coghlan's, Poland's have a few functions.
07:30 - 07:34
Your used there used Teoh separate the hour from the
07:34 - 07:36
minutes when you're looking at a loss.
07:37 - 07:39
They're also there to separate titles from subtitles.
07:41 - 07:44
There there to introduce list and to emphasize, award or
07:44 - 07:47
idea. So let's take a look at titles.
07:49 - 07:52
Star Wars and You Hope X Men First Class.
07:53 - 07:55
These are examples of titles and subtitles.
07:56 - 07:58
The main title in the first one, of course, is
07:58 - 07:58
Star Wars.
07:59 - 08:02
A New Hope is the subtitle, and in the second
08:02 - 08:04
one, Excellent is the main title.
08:05 - 08:06
First Class is the subtitle.
08:11 - 08:13
Poland's are also used to introduce lists.
08:14 - 08:18
So here, UH, two sentences with lists and them.
08:19 - 08:25
There are three finery colors holding red, yellow and blue.
08:27 - 08:28
The second one leads.
08:28 - 08:31
We will need a few materials to complete this project,
08:32 - 08:35
holding paper and scissors and glue.
08:37 - 08:40
The first part is a complete sentence the colon ends
08:40 - 08:42
the first complete sentence and then introduces a list.
08:47 - 08:48
Last but not least, the colon is there to emphasize
08:49 - 08:49
an idea.
08:50 - 08:53
So we are all afraid of the same thing.
08:53 - 08:57
Creepy clowns and the haunted mazes again, the first section
08:57 - 09:00
of the sentience is a complete each sentence.
09:01 - 09:01
It's a simple sentence.
09:02 - 09:03
We're all afraid of the same thing.
09:03 - 09:06
You can end it there, but the colon is introducing
09:08 - 09:11
or emphasizing the idea that creepy clowns and the haunted
09:12 - 09:14
nieces are things that we're all afraid.
09:14 - 09:16
Oh, second sentence reads.
09:17 - 09:20
I use one primary color and all of my projects
09:21 - 09:25
red. This sentence emphasizes the value of the color red
09:26 - 09:27
by just ending out with that word.
09:30 - 09:32
I use one primary color in all of my projects.
09:33 - 09:33
That's a complete sentence.
09:35 - 09:37
The colon is there simply to add the detail.
09:38 - 09:41
Red and red can stand alone because its stance of
09:41 - 09:42
island that's that word is emphasized.
09:47 - 09:52
So here you have three functions of punctuation and how
09:52 - 09:54
they help you and sentences.
09:55 - 09:57
They help you combine them, and they help you emphasize
09:58 - 10:02
ideas. If you have any other questions, please let me
10:02 - 10:04
know I will gladly walk you through this again.
10:05 - 10:07
And we also have this presentation to go back to
10:08 - 10:10
If you need to take more notes or if he
10:10 - 10:12
needs to refresh your memory.
10:13 - 10:13
Thank you.
