00:01 - 00:01
Hi.
00:01 - 00:03
So I'm Hannah and I did my project
00:03 - 00:07
on deforestation and specifically deforestation in Australia.
00:08 - 00:10
So first, what is deforestation?
00:10 - 00:14
It's the permanent removal of forests for commercial use or land availability
00:14 - 00:18
reasons for it are trees are often cut down to harvest
00:18 - 00:21
and export their wood for paper or other building materials.
00:21 - 00:26
Forests are cleared to make land available for farming, housing or mining
00:26 - 00:28
and the building of roads or dams is
00:28 - 00:30
another cause of deforestation that's pretty common.
00:31 - 00:34
Um It is of global importance because of the loss
00:34 - 00:37
of species and its contribution contribution to global warming.
00:39 - 00:42
Um specifically deforestation in Australia.
00:42 - 00:47
Um 50% of Australia's forests and Bush lands have been lost due to deforestation.
00:47 - 00:54
20% of this was rainforest, 19% was open forest and 11% was Malley Forest,
00:55 - 00:59
73% of the still forestation is a result of beef production
01:00 - 01:05
and 55 animal species and 37 plant species have gone extinct in Australia,
01:05 - 01:08
many of which are because of this deforestation.
01:08 - 01:10
Um Also because of this,
01:10 - 01:13
Australia has the highest mammal extinction rate in the world.
01:13 - 01:17
And there's another 700 species of plants and animals that
01:17 - 01:19
are endangered in Australia because
01:19 - 01:22
they're threatened further by deforestation.
01:22 - 01:25
Um 1/3 of carbon emissions released in Australia
01:25 - 01:29
are a result of deforestation and this combined
01:29 - 01:31
with bushfires and the increasing effects of climate
01:31 - 01:34
change calls for urgent protection and restoration.
01:35 - 01:37
Australian land and wildlife.
01:37 - 01:38
Um
01:38 - 01:41
The graph on the left gives a visual idea
01:41 - 01:43
of the amount of deforestation that has taken place?
01:44 - 01:46
It shows the original state of the land and forests of
01:46 - 01:50
Australia versus what areas have been completely cleared or degraded today
01:52 - 01:53
and a little about koalas.
01:54 - 01:56
They're currently endangered and they are threatened
01:56 - 01:58
mostly because of the loss of habitat,
01:58 - 01:59
because of deforestation.
02:00 - 02:02
Um in the year 2018 alone,
02:02 - 02:06
nearly 93,000 hectares of Koala habitat were destroyed and
02:06 - 02:09
80% of these hectares were used for commercial agriculture.
02:11 - 02:18
Um the first sustainable development goal I researched for this was # 13,
02:18 - 02:19
which is climate action.
02:19 - 02:23
Climate change is a global challenge that affects everyone everywhere,
02:24 - 02:29
and the forestation makes up 20% of the world's CO two and greenhouse gas emissions,
02:29 - 02:31
which is the main cause of global warming
02:31 - 02:36
and it contributes contributes to one third of Australia's
02:36 - 02:39
beef production and commercial agriculture.
02:39 - 02:43
Often why forests are cleared heavily contribute to this also,
02:43 - 02:45
and urgent action must be,
02:45 - 02:49
must take place to tackle this direct influence on climate change.
02:51 - 02:55
The second sustainable development goal that I looked at was number 15,
02:55 - 02:59
which is life on land, uh sustainability, manages forests,
02:59 - 03:01
combat desertification,
03:01 - 03:06
halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss,
03:07 - 03:10
um deforestation directly challenges sustainable development.
03:11 - 03:14
And it has threatened around one million species with extinction.
03:14 - 03:16
Examples of which are seen
03:17 - 03:17
in Australia
03:18 - 03:23
and as it leaves them with without a habitat or kills them in the process,
03:23 - 03:25
um deforestation is influence on the life on
03:25 - 03:28
land can affect the economy and food security,
03:28 - 03:32
but most importantly, it affects the quality of life for each species on earth.
03:32 - 03:33
Mhm.
03:34 - 03:37
And some solutions to deforestation.
03:37 - 03:41
Um At a societal level stricter policies and bands need to be put under forestation.
03:41 - 03:45
Uh This, combined combined with land restoration,
03:45 - 03:47
is imperative to improve the livelihood of species on earth.
03:48 - 03:50
And at an individual level,
03:50 - 03:54
one must make sustainable choices and encourage others to do the same.
03:55 - 03:57
Um Things like consuming less meat,
03:57 - 03:59
avoiding single use plastics and choosing
03:59 - 04:02
recycled or ethical wood based products will
04:02 - 04:04
contribute to the protection of the world's
04:04 - 04:07
forests and help combat global warming.
04:08 - 04:10
And that's it. Thank you.
