  1. Hello, my name is Jane Lewis.
  2. And today I'll be presenting on the Business communication skills.
  3. I learned this semester in my English class.
  4. The first skill I wanted to highlight was effective listening.
  5. I consider myself a pretty good public speaker but not the best listener.
  6. So this is a great skill to develop throughout this course.
  7. When listening effectively, you want to
  8. listen for content, you want to understand and maintain that content,
  9. you wanna listen critically,
  10. which means you want to understand and evaluate the content that you are hearing
  11. and you want to listen empathetically,
  12. which is to understand the feelings and want that the speaker
  13. is giving you
  14. for effective listening. You want to maintain on contact.
  15. You want to appear attentive. You don't want to interrupt the speaker.
  16. You want to wait for pauses to ask questions and you
  17. want to pay attention to verbal cues such as body movements.
  18. Second is negative messages.
  19. You learned how to respond to and how to write negative messages.
  20. Obviously, when you're writing or
  21. receiving
  22. a message, it is bad news.
  23. You want to ensure acceptance of this message, you want to maintain good.
  24. Will you want to maintain a good image
  25. for yourself or the company that you're representing
  26. and you want to reduce correspondence.
  27. There are two methods you can use when writing a negative message,
  28. you can use direct or indirect,
  29. direct is obviously a more straightforward approach and indirect uses a buffer
  30. to usually soften the blow for whoever might be receiving that message.
  31. This is a great skill to learn as
  32. writing something negative is never particularly easy.
  33. So I think it was great to have
  34. uh kind of a good layout for how to write a negative message.
  35. Third was persuasion. And in this, I focused on the A model.
  36. The first a stands for attention,
  37. you want to capture the attention of the audience that you are trying to market to
  38. the eye is for interest.
  39. You want to build this interest in the audience,
  40. sell whatever product you're selling,
  41. the D is for desire. You want to build sort of an emotional connection
  42. that
  43. not only keeps the consumer interested,
  44. but kind of makes them feel like they're being heard or represented.
  45. And the last ice for action and you want to engage either the
  46. sale or further research for the product that you might be selling.
  47. Now for this, this is a great skill for business.
  48. As usually in business, you're trying to sell something,
  49. whether it be yourself and your services or a product that you might have developed.
  50. And it is great to have
  51. some good persuasion skills under your belt.
  52. Fourth is employment slash application messages in this class,
  53. we learned how to write resumes, cover letters,
  54. letters of recommendation and thank you letters
  55. as for resumes, you are marketing yourself to an employer.
  56. So you want to list all your good skills and good qualities for cover letters.
  57. You want to advertise your specific skills and roles for that position.
  58. You are currently applying to
  59. a letter of recommendation is usually written by a
  60. previous employer or mentor that advertises your skills.
  61. So you're not advertising yourself.
  62. And a thank you letter is usually used to thank um whoever you might be speaking to
  63. for their consideration for reading over your resume or
  64. cover letter or whatever you might have given them
  65. and or it can be used to accept whatever role or position you have
  66. gotten.
  67. And it just helps to build a better personal connection between you and this person.
  68. Um Knowing how to write these applications is a great skill.
  69. As obviously, if the employer isn't seeing you right away,
  70. you're trying to get the interview.
  71. So showing yourself in a good light on these
  72. applications will help you get ahead in that process.
  73. And lastly is proposal research,
  74. probably the most important thing I learned in this class.
  75. So I saved the best for less
  76. as for articles I learned about scholarly articles,
  77. trade articles and popular popular articles,
  78. scholarly articles are usually more nuanced sort
  79. of writing uh for higher level research,
  80. trade articles are used for people in a certain occupation
  81. to learn about certain skills and things you might need.
  82. And popular articles are for the populace,
  83. but all of them are used in their own specific way
  84. and are useful when creating a proposal.
  85. As for financial health of a company,
  86. whether you are receiving the proposal or giving the proposal,
  87. you want to know about the health of the company
  88. for investment purposes.
  89. And you can look at this through S E C filings, letters to shareholders,
  90. competitors and company profiles and for marketing,
  91. you can take a look at the US census or market research reports.
  92. Overall,
  93. I learned a lot in this class and I'm very thankful for everything I
  94. learned and I'm excited to see how these skills help me in the future.
  95. Thank you.
