00:00 - 00:01
Hello, everyone.
00:01 - 00:02
My name is Samantha.
00:02 - 00:02
Oh, God.
00:02 - 00:05
Oh, and today I will be discussing accounting as a
00:05 - 00:05
potential career.
00:06 - 00:09
First, I will be discussing why I chose accounting.
00:11 - 00:13
Math plays a huge role in accounting, and I've always
00:14 - 00:15
thought that I had a natural liking for it, and
00:16 - 00:17
I tended to do better in it than my other
00:17 - 00:19
classes. So I thought I would use this to my
00:20 - 00:23
benefit and choose a career and major that were very
00:23 - 00:24
math oriented.
00:27 - 00:29
Another reason that I chose accounting is because I think
00:29 - 00:32
that the preparation and the role of accounting itself helps
00:33 - 00:36
to make you very independent with finances, since you tend
00:36 - 00:38
to be more knowledgeable on this subject.
00:39 - 00:42
Another reason why I chose accounting is because I think
00:42 - 00:44
it's a good way to have an independent practice but
00:44 - 00:48
still be able to help others through their business, since
00:48 - 00:51
you are helping to guide them, have better profits in
00:51 - 00:52
better financial security.
00:55 - 00:57
Next, I will be discussing what the accounting work environment
00:58 - 00:58
is like.
00:59 - 01:02
So accounting is a very versatile position and there's a
01:02 - 01:04
lot of different options toe what your work environment will
01:05 - 01:05
actually look like.
01:06 - 01:09
But there's kind of three main categories, and those can
01:09 - 01:09
be broken down as follows.
01:10 - 01:12
The first top picture on the left kind of represents
01:13 - 01:15
a classic office job 9 to 5.
01:16 - 01:18
You work in a larger building with a lot of
01:18 - 01:20
other people in the company, some of which are also
01:21 - 01:21
accountants like you.
01:22 - 01:24
The top right picture represents.
01:24 - 01:27
If you have your own independent practice, you'll have your
01:27 - 01:27
own business.
01:28 - 01:31
Place your own reception, everything like that, and you tend
01:31 - 01:34
to work just yourself, or maybe with another accountant as
01:34 - 01:37
well. And the bottom picture represents that you can have
01:37 - 01:40
your own practice or with work with a company, and
01:40 - 01:41
you can work from home.
01:41 - 01:44
This means that all your data and information will typically
01:45 - 01:49
be translated and communicated online rather than in person.
01:52 - 01:54
The growth outlook for accounting seems to be a projected
01:55 - 01:57
6% from 2018 to 2028.
01:58 - 02:01
This is about the same rate as other occupations, so
02:01 - 02:03
it's not necessarily positive or negative.
02:03 - 02:04
It's just about average.
02:06 - 02:08
Next, I will be talking about the types of technology
02:08 - 02:15
in account, so technology in accounting is very different and
02:15 - 02:18
it varies from company to company because they tend to
02:18 - 02:24
use different Softwares that better suit their products, Service's and
02:24 - 02:25
their financial accounts.
02:26 - 02:28
The's congee different on line platforms.
02:29 - 02:32
Some companies tend to use more physical materials rather than
02:33 - 02:35
online. But for the most part, a lot of different
02:36 - 02:39
companies have different Softwares that they use, along with very
02:39 - 02:44
common software, such as Like Excel, which is used a
02:44 - 02:48
lot to do different additions and subtractions to financial accounts.
02:50 - 02:52
The way the technology is expected to changes in accounting
02:53 - 02:57
is really seeming to transition more toe a fully online
02:58 - 03:01
career. This can mean that you still go into the
03:01 - 03:04
workplace, but a lot of your information and data that
03:04 - 03:07
you work on daily and access will be stored in
03:07 - 03:07
the cloud.
03:08 - 03:11
Now this is an extremely common right now, but a
03:11 - 03:13
lot of companies do seem to be switching to it
03:14 - 03:16
just because of how easy it is to access and
03:16 - 03:20
share information with others, rather than having just physical papers
03:21 - 03:23
or copies of things which can easily either be lost
03:24 - 03:27
or not as easily shared with other people who you
03:27 - 03:27
work with.
03:29 - 03:31
Next, we will be looking at finance and its role
03:32 - 03:36
in accounting, so I am majoring in finance, and I
03:36 - 03:38
chose this mainly because I want to be an accountant.
03:39 - 03:43
But on Lee, that would kind of be not as
03:43 - 03:46
successful as choosing a major that is very versatile.
03:46 - 03:49
And that's one of the benefits of choosing finance is
03:49 - 03:52
there are many career options aside from accounting.
03:54 - 03:57
I also think that majoring in finance in particular to
03:57 - 04:02
be an accountant is very beneficial because the classes that
04:02 - 04:06
you are taking aren't Onley geared towards accounting, like in
04:06 - 04:07
an accounting major.
04:07 - 04:10
But you're also taking other classes that benefit your financial
04:10 - 04:13
knowledge, for example, to have a finance major.
04:14 - 04:16
Some of the courses that you have to complete include
04:16 - 04:20
both financial and managerial accounting, which are two very different
04:21 - 04:23
types of accounting, and you're still getting that under your
04:23 - 04:27
bell as well as another example is statistics for business
04:27 - 04:29
and economics, which kind of gives you a better idea
04:30 - 04:32
of finance in a role outside of accounting.
04:33 - 04:35
So I feel like it gives you a well rounded
04:35 - 04:40
balance to become an accountant, and when you're enrolled in
04:40 - 04:42
a finance major, just the fact that you are attempting
04:42 - 04:45
to complete this major allows you to have ah position
04:46 - 04:50
in accounting internships as well as other finance internships, which
04:50 - 04:52
could benefit you in the long run for your accounting
04:52 - 04:55
career. Next, I will be talking about the things that
04:56 - 04:57
I learned while researching counting.
04:59 - 05:01
So the two main takeaways that I had from this
05:01 - 05:02
were first.
05:03 - 05:04
That accounting has a lot of job flexibility.
05:05 - 05:07
This is one of the things that I hadn't particularly
05:08 - 05:10
considered. But I do think will benefit me greatly as
05:10 - 05:13
an individual, because having the option to work from home
05:14 - 05:15
does seem really appealing to me.
05:16 - 05:18
And I know that it's very common practice in accounting.
05:19 - 05:21
The second thing that I learned was that there's a
05:21 - 05:22
wide range of Softwares.
05:23 - 05:26
I thought that the majority of accounting in practice that
05:26 - 05:28
I would have to learn I would be able to
05:28 - 05:29
learn through my classes.
05:30 - 05:33
But I realized that most employees have to learn their
05:33 - 05:35
company's software once they're in a position.
05:37 - 05:40
Next, I will be talking about accounting in the FBI
05:40 - 05:40
you community.
05:42 - 05:45
So the first club that I noticed that f i
05:45 - 05:48
u waas out fla A L P f A.
05:48 - 05:51
And this is the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance
05:52 - 05:52
and Accounting.
05:54 - 05:57
This organization is the largest business student organization on campus
05:58 - 06:00
and is a part of one of the largest professional
06:01 - 06:03
organizations for Latinos in the entire nation.
06:04 - 06:06
I think that this would be a great opportunity for
06:06 - 06:08
me and would also leave me to finding a position
06:09 - 06:09
in accounting.
06:10 - 06:13
The second organization that I was looking at was Finance
06:13 - 06:14
and Management Association.
06:15 - 06:18
I think this would be a great addition to my
06:18 - 06:21
classes that if I you because the mission of FM
06:21 - 06:24
A is to promote the development and understanding of basic
06:24 - 06:27
and applied research and sound financial practices.
06:28 - 06:31
Its intention is to enhance the quality of your education
06:31 - 06:33
and finance, and I think that this could greatly benefit
06:34 - 06:35
me as a finance student.
06:36 - 06:39
That's all on my topic of accounting and thank you
06:39 - 06:39
for watching.
