00:01 - 00:04
Hi everybody, this is fabulous Chavez and I will be
00:04 - 00:10
presenting this Prezi on Discord before we get started with
00:10 - 00:12
Discord. I just want to explain a little bit about
00:13 - 00:16
the library sending the Discord could potentially work for this
00:16 - 00:17
would be an academic library.
00:18 - 00:23
So university library that specializes in helping undergraduate graduate faculty
00:23 - 00:27
and staff with research, just any general circulation and service
00:27 - 00:32
questions. It's a little bit about Discord.
00:34 - 00:37
Discord is an instant messaging platform that is designed for
00:37 - 00:40
users to create communities or they can communicate with each
00:40 - 00:46
other. Types of communication include voice calls, video calls, text
00:47 - 00:51
messages, media, file sharing, private group messaging and individual messaging.
00:53 - 00:55
Also within Prezi you can create channels.
00:56 - 01:00
These communication channels are 100% customizable, so you can make
01:01 - 01:01
them about anything.
01:02 - 01:05
There's a 500 channel limit per server and you can
01:05 - 01:06
make text or voice channels.
01:16 - 01:19
So some pros about Discord that I really enjoyed.
01:20 - 01:23
The interface is very user friendly and self explanatory.
01:24 - 01:29
Once you download Discord, it's pretty easy to use once
01:29 - 01:31
you also have a link for which survey you'd like
01:31 - 01:33
to use, your able to join and chat amongst other
01:33 - 01:34
users in the same server.
01:35 - 01:36
The server is customizable.
01:37 - 01:40
So you can create the server for whatever fits your
01:40 - 01:43
needs and then create the sub channels within those servers.
01:44 - 01:46
Some channels can be made private while others need permission
01:47 - 01:47
to post.
01:48 - 01:52
Um and you you can just share the link with
01:52 - 01:53
anybody who wants it.
01:54 - 01:57
This court is also 100% free and the mobile app
01:58 - 02:00
is also free and available for Android and Apple users
02:02 - 02:03
outside of your general servers that you create.
02:04 - 02:07
There are also public servers that have gaming, music, education,
02:08 - 02:12
science and tech within the scope of those that you
02:12 - 02:15
can just go browsing for anything that interests you.
02:20 - 02:24
So, some cons about Discord is that there's minimal customizable
02:25 - 02:29
customization settings in the general interface, there's only like the
02:29 - 02:32
dark sitting in the light setting, so this cord looks
02:32 - 02:32
the same for everybody.
02:34 - 02:37
Um There's an eight megabyte file sharing limit when you
02:37 - 02:38
send messages through.
02:39 - 02:42
Um you have to monitor your users yourself as a
02:42 - 02:44
server owner, so there are no mods available.
02:45 - 02:48
Um you just have to create those yourself And then
02:48 - 02:51
depending on server needs, the 500 channel limit, maybe limiting
02:52 - 02:52
for some.
02:56 - 02:59
Mhm. So some some surprises that I found within discord
03:00 - 03:02
um is that you're able to build this huge community
03:03 - 03:04
depending on your needs.
03:05 - 03:08
Um I did think the 500 channels are pretty cool,
03:08 - 03:10
I think that's enough depending on your needs.
03:11 - 03:13
Um And the private channels are also really nice.
03:15 - 03:17
Some improvements I might give.
03:17 - 03:19
Discord is just added security.
03:20 - 03:23
Um you know, anybody can hack into anything these days,
03:24 - 03:28
so if Discord gave us that extra security that they're
03:29 - 03:33
able to, you know, withhold any ransomware attacks, that'd be
03:33 - 03:37
nice collaboration with education would be good that way.
03:37 - 03:41
Academic universities, high schools, middle schools can start using it
03:41 - 03:43
since it's such a huge platform for communication.
03:44 - 03:45
Um and then some more visual customization.
03:48 - 03:52
So Discord in an academic library, I would use Discord
03:52 - 03:54
for specific user group channels.
03:55 - 03:57
You know, I would create a specific channel for the
03:57 - 04:02
students, um either undergraduates or graduates specific channel for staff
04:03 - 04:06
faculty. I would also create a general library questions channel
04:07 - 04:10
so that anybody could ask anything about services or circulation.
04:11 - 04:13
Um And Discord could also be used to promote events,
04:14 - 04:15
services and the collection.
04:16 - 04:17
You know, if anybody has questions, you can say, hey
04:18 - 04:19
come on down tonight.
04:20 - 04:24
There's a book club at eight p.m. So on and
04:24 - 04:24
so forth.
04:27 - 04:31
Also some best practices for discord and academic library just
04:31 - 04:32
to keep it casual and easy to use.
04:33 - 04:36
Um, you don't want to overwhelm any of your users,
04:36 - 04:40
especially undergraduates who are already stressed, Team up with the
04:40 - 04:45
university 18 for again, bringing potential malware scares and then
04:45 - 04:49
make sure there are no outside general audience or anybody
04:49 - 04:52
you don't want on the servers and then just monitoring
04:52 - 04:56
channels for anything unwanted that doesn't fit within the library's
04:56 - 04:56
mission.
