00:00 - 00:02
Hello and welcome to Mr Primes.
00:02 - 00:04
12th grade college prep class.
00:04 - 00:05
I'm filming from my kitchen.
00:05 - 00:08
You can see my Nish ship lap wall behind me.
00:08 - 00:10
Eso one of the things that I wanted to go
00:10 - 00:13
over today, as I meet you and you meet me
00:13 - 00:16
without a mask, some of these guys might not even
00:16 - 00:17
know I have a good to you.
00:17 - 00:20
They have not seen without a mask yet, unfortunately, But
00:20 - 00:23
this year, we are going to make the best out
00:23 - 00:23
of our situation.
00:24 - 00:25
So we're only meeting twice a week.
00:25 - 00:27
And for most students, I only see you on Wednesdays.
00:28 - 00:31
But for this year, we're gonna all the same material.
00:32 - 00:34
We're going to cover the same amount of assignments, the
00:34 - 00:37
same amount of writing, and in some ways, we're actually
00:37 - 00:40
covering Mawr because you have more time at home to
00:40 - 00:41
work on the assignment that we give.
00:42 - 00:44
And you're really getting time to spend with the material
00:45 - 00:45
that I give out.
00:45 - 00:48
So just a quick overview of May.
00:49 - 00:51
I have been teaching here for seven years.
00:51 - 00:54
I graduated here for in 2000 and 10 so you
00:54 - 00:56
could do the math and how old I am.
00:56 - 01:01
I coach soccer on the J V coach.
01:01 - 01:03
I was the freshman coach for two years, and I've
01:03 - 01:03
been the J.
01:03 - 01:05
V coach for five years now.
01:05 - 01:05
It's my fifth year.
01:06 - 01:09
I coached tennis for two years, and I coached boys
01:10 - 01:12
valuable for a short season last year.
01:12 - 01:14
So all of that said is I'm pretty involved with
01:14 - 01:15
the after school activities.
01:16 - 01:18
I've run the yearbook, so I have been really in
01:18 - 01:23
touch with your students on senior portrait CE and baby
01:23 - 01:26
pictures. And I'm gonna get first dibs on the information
01:26 - 01:28
that I need from them.
01:28 - 01:30
And I'll be, you know, pressuring them in class to
01:30 - 01:32
do certain things and given extra credit for submitting their
01:32 - 01:34
baby picture earlier this year.
01:34 - 01:38
So all of that said, I taught in Trend Central
01:38 - 01:41
High School for three years before I came here, and
01:41 - 01:42
I love it here.
01:43 - 01:44
It's where I grew up.
01:44 - 01:46
I became a father in February of last year.
01:47 - 01:48
I have a little ginger baby.
01:48 - 01:51
She's eight months old, she is awesome, but she also
01:51 - 01:51
doesn't let me sleep.
01:52 - 01:54
So you'll be getting me groggy many mornings if I
01:54 - 01:56
have you first period as I'm trying to get through
01:57 - 01:58
the day, but she's awesome.
01:59 - 02:01
And, um, you know, I live inhabited.
02:01 - 02:03
My wife and I, Alison, live real close.
02:03 - 02:05
So, you know, we're invested in the community and the
02:05 - 02:09
school, so to go over what we actually read this
02:09 - 02:14
year, um, we are reading, uh, just to go over
02:14 - 02:14
the main units.
02:15 - 02:16
We start in ancient texts.
02:17 - 02:20
So we start with Samarian Egyptian, Hebrew, which is biblical,
02:20 - 02:25
er, Arabic literature, which is the Koran on dhe, then
02:25 - 02:27
unit to we go to the rise of Asia.
02:27 - 02:28
You know, three.
02:28 - 02:29
We're in classical, ancient Greece.
02:30 - 02:32
So that's where we could the need and the Iliad
02:33 - 02:33
and number.
02:33 - 02:36
The Unit four we go Thio, Middle Ages and the
02:36 - 02:40
Renaissance Unit five, where in the Romantic and Unit six,
02:41 - 02:42
we are in contemporary world literature.
02:42 - 02:44
So we're all over the map, literally.
02:44 - 02:48
We're kind of bouncing back and forth, going for what
02:49 - 02:52
we call the, you know, going through ancient world literature
02:52 - 02:54
all the way up to present day covering the big
02:55 - 02:56
chunks of literature across.
02:56 - 02:58
So we cover a lot of different styles they don't
02:58 - 03:00
like. Something will be done very soon because another unit
03:01 - 03:01
to go thio.
03:02 - 03:04
Uh, so we just finished Gilgamesh.
03:04 - 03:07
We're gonna move on to Greek next, and we'll be
03:07 - 03:11
talking about the Iliad as they already read The Odyssey,
03:12 - 03:14
which is part two of the alien.
03:14 - 03:16
So we go backwards because its second part's easier to
03:16 - 03:19
reach. The freshmen read the Odyssey, which I also teach
03:19 - 03:21
freshman and then the seniors read the Iliad.
03:22 - 03:22
So it's backwards.
03:22 - 03:23
But it makes sense when you look at the reading
03:24 - 03:27
content so that we cover many, many different things.
03:28 - 03:29
The last thing we covered the end of the year
03:29 - 03:29
is Shakespeare.
03:30 - 03:34
We cover Hamlet and what we right, So we right,
03:35 - 03:38
uh, all kinds of styles of writing.
03:38 - 03:40
But the main thing that I want to do with
03:40 - 03:42
these seniors is give them writing that they can use
03:42 - 03:42
beyond the classroom.
03:43 - 03:44
So I know many of them are applying to colleges.
03:45 - 03:45
They have common APS.
03:46 - 03:48
They are applying to some of our communities, and our
03:48 - 03:50
four year some are just doing technical schools.
03:51 - 03:53
A lot of them require essays to be submitted when
03:54 - 03:55
they when they apply.
03:55 - 03:59
So the essays that they're gonna be writing we, Mr
03:59 - 04:01
Boyd and I teach the college prep seniors.
04:01 - 04:02
We've narrowed it down to the main problems.
04:03 - 04:05
They're usually used on bacon, right?
04:05 - 04:09
Those essays for my class or sometime this month towards
04:09 - 04:11
the end, we're going to start writing our common up
04:11 - 04:13
essays so they can translate them over to their coming
04:14 - 04:15
up when they are ready to go.
04:15 - 04:17
So writing the matters.
04:18 - 04:20
And so when they get to English comp 101 in
04:20 - 04:22
college, they have a basic understanding of what to expect,
04:22 - 04:23
and they're not behind.
04:24 - 04:24
We want to be ahead.
04:25 - 04:26
So we're prepping them for college is why this is
04:27 - 04:31
called college prep, so we write a plethora of things.
04:31 - 04:33
One of the main things we write is a research
04:33 - 04:36
paper. So again, it's modeled after English comp one No.
04:36 - 04:37
One but there to expect.
04:37 - 04:39
Hopefully, they won't be making that face.
04:39 - 04:41
They've already written three research papers if they stayed in
04:41 - 04:44
CP for the past three years, and I know that
04:44 - 04:46
because I taught them as freshmen and I taught a
04:46 - 04:46
research paper.
04:47 - 04:49
So this one is supposed to be the capstone, so
04:49 - 04:50
it's a little longer.
04:50 - 04:52
It's a little more intense, but this is what they'll
04:53 - 04:56
be writing as soon as November hits.
04:57 - 05:01
I'm gonna start introducing that typically we do a debate.
05:02 - 05:03
We set it up.
05:03 - 05:03
We go the auditorium.
05:05 - 05:06
But this year might be different.
05:06 - 05:08
So I really don't want to do a Google meat
05:09 - 05:11
or resume debate, but we'll see how we can dio.
05:11 - 05:13
So I try to keep everything persuasive, not just regurgitating
05:14 - 05:18
information back goto higher level learning, which is taking that
05:18 - 05:21
information and synthesizing into their own opinion and regurgitating it
05:21 - 05:22
back in that way.
05:23 - 05:27
And that way we have demonstration of higher level learning
05:27 - 05:27
in that respect.
05:29 - 05:34
So overview of the course we're gonna have two or
05:34 - 05:35
three essays of marking periods.
05:36 - 05:38
You're talking about 10 to 12 by the end of
05:38 - 05:42
the year, we will be covering all basically, uh, ridiculous
05:43 - 05:46
amount of literature from the beginning of the Sumerian text,
05:46 - 05:48
which is the oldest known text we have to today.
05:49 - 05:52
And I'll throw in a lot of modern articles and
05:52 - 05:54
a lot of modern things as well as we go
05:54 - 05:54
to make comparisons.
05:55 - 05:58
But we do cover a lot of ground, and we
05:58 - 05:59
have a lot to do this year.
05:59 - 06:01
So I'm looking forward to building upon, you know, the
06:02 - 06:05
past three years of literature and knowledge and content awareness
06:06 - 06:07
and moving forward and getting them ready for college.
06:09 - 06:12
And I'm looking forward to, you know, just I love
06:13 - 06:13
teaching seniors.
06:13 - 06:14
I love how they're basically.
06:15 - 06:16
Well, at least they think they're adults, or you can
06:16 - 06:20
treat them or like adults and develop that relationship with
06:20 - 06:22
them where they're, you know, my job is to help
06:23 - 06:24
them. So if they come with the with the work
06:24 - 06:27
ethic, then my job is to get them ready for
06:27 - 06:30
college. I'm not, you know, walking around the classroom, barking
06:30 - 06:32
orders. This is This is what we need to do,
06:32 - 06:33
how we're gonna get through it together.
06:34 - 06:35
And that's the kind of the attitude I have for
06:36 - 06:36
this year.
06:37 - 06:39
So if you have any questions, please feel free to
06:39 - 06:39
reach out.
06:40 - 06:42
My Google classroom couldn't be more simply set up.
06:42 - 06:43
It's the topic is the week.
06:44 - 06:46
Assignments are labeled by the day so they know every
06:46 - 06:47
day. What's Dio?
06:47 - 06:49
It's going to get more intense when we get to
06:49 - 06:51
the research paper and as we move through our next
06:52 - 06:55
few big readings, so please encourage them to to stay
06:55 - 06:57
up with their work if they're on remote.
06:57 - 06:58
I know it's hard, but today.
06:58 - 06:59
Discipline this possible?
07:00 - 07:02
I can't accept late work just because the way this
07:02 - 07:04
new system is so if it's not there by the
07:05 - 07:06
end of the day or, you know, when I say
07:07 - 07:10
something's Dio I physically, I can't go back in and
07:10 - 07:11
keep it something things like, because I don't get alerted
07:12 - 07:12
when they come in late.
07:13 - 07:15
So after I grade it, that's it.
07:15 - 07:17
So please stay on top of your work, make sure
07:17 - 07:19
that they are signing in because I only have one
07:19 - 07:21
period of seniors in their first period.
07:21 - 07:23
So you guys in my home room, so make sure
07:23 - 07:24
that they click on that link and sign in so
07:25 - 07:26
they don't have any attendance issues at the end of
07:26 - 07:26
the year.
07:27 - 07:30
And they, you know, they can walk a graduation while
07:30 - 07:34
having to argue days away, and hopefully by January will
07:34 - 07:34
be in person.
07:35 - 07:39
And hopefully when this whole mess resolves with our candidates
07:40 - 07:42
going for a for office, we can get back in
07:42 - 07:45
school full time and be five days a week.
07:46 - 07:47
Let's be so nice.
07:47 - 07:49
I'm already so tired of this and I'm sure you
07:49 - 07:51
would love them and have them out of the house
07:51 - 07:51
for five days.
07:52 - 07:54
All right, so have a great week.
07:55 - 07:57
Enjoy the rest of your back to school night and
07:58 - 08:00
I will talk to you soon.
