00:02 - 00:06
good morning scholars, adult supporters, administration staff and anybody else
00:06 - 00:07
who wants to watch this video.
00:08 - 00:11
This is Miss Keith, and I am giving you our
00:11 - 00:14
presentation on Dr Martin Luther King Jr because it's his
00:14 - 00:17
day today that we observe in the United States of
00:17 - 00:19
America. I just want to tell you a little bit
00:19 - 00:23
about him, let you read through my presentation and just
00:24 - 00:25
learn as much as you can about him and hopefully
00:26 - 00:29
be moved to serve today.
00:29 - 00:30
So here we go.
00:33 - 00:35
The first thing I want to talk about was a
00:35 - 00:37
brief biography about him, just in case you don't know
00:37 - 00:37
about him.
00:38 - 00:41
Basically, when he was born, what type of education he
00:41 - 00:45
received, what he did throughout his lifetime, why he was
00:46 - 00:47
who was inspired by.
00:47 - 00:49
So if you read through this, you'll get that information.
00:51 - 00:52
The next thing I wanted to talk about.
00:53 - 00:55
Waas a brief history of the era.
00:56 - 00:59
So that's basically what was going on during the civil
00:59 - 01:02
rights movement of the 20th century and the reconstruction era
01:02 - 01:05
of the 19th century eso In this section.
01:06 - 01:08
If you read about it, you'll see basically what the
01:08 - 01:11
mindset was of people during that time what was going
01:11 - 01:12
on during that time.
01:12 - 01:15
So please take some time to read through that when
01:15 - 01:15
you get a chance.
01:16 - 01:20
Next is his prior assassination attempts.
01:20 - 01:23
A lot of people don't know that Dr King was
01:24 - 01:28
or had an assassination attempt on him when he was
01:28 - 01:31
42 years old by a woman who had a mental
01:31 - 01:33
illness. She really wanted him dead.
01:33 - 01:34
Her name was I.
01:34 - 01:39
Zola. Where, Curry, um and she stabbed him and with
01:39 - 01:40
a pen knife in his chest.
01:41 - 01:44
And if she has succeeded, or if he had sneezed,
01:45 - 01:46
it would have killed him.
01:46 - 01:49
So if he had, if all that had happened, he
01:49 - 01:50
would have not given his great.
01:51 - 01:55
I have a dream speech, and millions of people would
01:55 - 01:58
not have been informed that didn't know what was going
01:58 - 02:01
on down south or the different places that he went
02:02 - 02:06
about his, um, civil civil rights movement that was going
02:06 - 02:08
on because some people just didn't pay attention.
02:09 - 02:10
And, you know, if you don't see it on the
02:10 - 02:12
news or you don't see it, then it doesn't happen
02:13 - 02:13
for most people.
02:14 - 02:16
So yes, definitely read through this and you can learn
02:17 - 02:23
about his assassination attempts next, some famous quotes and these
02:23 - 02:24
quotes some.
02:24 - 02:27
They're not as famous there, they're different.
02:28 - 02:31
And I deliberately made them different because I wanted you
02:31 - 02:33
to read about the different sides of him and the
02:33 - 02:36
different organizations that he worked with, like the S C
02:37 - 02:41
L C um, organization, um, and how he was radical.
02:42 - 02:45
So make sure you read through these quotes because he
02:45 - 02:47
wasn't, um, well loved by everybody.
02:48 - 02:53
During this time, he actually was put on the list
02:53 - 02:57
of people that the FBI were targeting to make sure
02:57 - 02:58
that they didn't get too big.
02:59 - 03:05
And so even there is a documentary about how the
03:05 - 03:09
president at the time was trying to use his movement
03:10 - 03:11
because he was the safer movement.
03:12 - 03:18
Because he did talk about civil disobedience where, um he
03:19 - 03:22
was trying, though, to make it more massive that there
03:23 - 03:28
were more civil disobedient, um, outpouring in all over the
03:28 - 03:30
country. And that's when they got a little bit mawr
03:31 - 03:32
worried about him.
03:32 - 03:34
But before that, prior to that, he was just having
03:34 - 03:38
the peaceful sit ins where they would not use violence
03:39 - 03:41
against people that were using violence against them.
03:41 - 03:43
And so they thought he was the safer bit because
03:44 - 03:48
during this time there were other organizations that were like,
03:48 - 03:51
We're not doing civil disobedience because they keep harming us
03:52 - 03:53
and they keep beating us and they keep doing all
03:54 - 03:54
the things that they were doing.
03:55 - 03:58
And so, like I said for them, they were trying
03:58 - 04:02
to use him as a tool of saying, We're gonna
04:02 - 04:04
let him go a ce faras He could go because
04:04 - 04:07
he's of Reverend and he's safer.
04:08 - 04:11
So yes, definitely read through the quotes and learn a
04:11 - 04:12
little bit more about Dr King.
04:14 - 04:18
Next, let me go back.
04:18 - 04:22
Sorry, I have a video that I want you to
04:22 - 04:27
watch, Um, and when you actually click on it, you
04:27 - 04:28
will be able to watch it.
04:28 - 04:32
But it's basically about the gentleman that told this group
04:32 - 04:35
of kids to turn down their music because he felt
04:36 - 04:39
like it was thug music and that it disturbs its
04:39 - 04:44
peace. And so he shot through the window of the
04:44 - 04:47
car, and if you watch the video, you'll learn a
04:47 - 04:48
little bit about that as well.
04:49 - 04:54
Next, What can you do now?
04:55 - 04:58
That is a video of President Barack Obama, who signed
04:59 - 05:02
into a law a hate crime, Um, to continue Dr
05:02 - 05:03
King's dream.
05:03 - 05:08
It was because one individual, what was two different individuals.
05:08 - 05:12
But one in particular was about Mr Bird, who had
05:12 - 05:17
been tied to a truck and dragged, um, throughout this
05:17 - 05:18
country road in Texas.
05:19 - 05:20
And it was terrible hate crime.
05:21 - 05:24
And so in this video, President Obama signs this hate
05:24 - 05:27
crime law to continue his work and then on the
05:27 - 05:27
right side.
05:28 - 05:31
If you read this when you are doing reading through
05:31 - 05:33
the presentation, it's about different things you can do today.
05:34 - 05:37
Um, today at 11, there is an actual MLK service
05:38 - 05:39
event virtually online.
05:40 - 05:42
You can watch with your family, and then there's different
05:42 - 05:43
places you can volunteer.
05:44 - 05:48
Um, but yes, you should try to continue to follow
05:49 - 05:52
Dr King's example and follow his dream and give back.
05:53 - 05:56
And so today there's different places that you can give
05:56 - 05:59
back service here or you can do it.
05:59 - 06:01
A different time of year doesn't have to be today,
06:02 - 06:04
but that is the that is the hope that is.
06:05 - 06:09
The vision is that you continue Thio, pursue his dream
06:09 - 06:10
and give back to your community.
06:12 - 06:13
I hope this helps, and I hope it was informative,
06:14 - 06:16
and I hope that you will all take the time
06:17 - 06:17
to give back.
06:19 - 06:21
All right, You have a great day and thank you
06:21 - 06:22
for listening back.
