What Is Multicultural Education?
Students learn when they are engaged.
They are engaged when they are interested.
They are interested when it is meaningful and relevant.
It is meaningful and relevant when they can make connections with their own experience and background knowledge.
Also, learners need to feel understood and accepted by their peers, their teacher and the school community at large.

Why Multicultural Education
Delivery- you must address a diversity of learning styles while challenging the dynamics of power and privilege in your classroom by varying instructional approaches.

Research shows:
There is no magic bullet, no one strategy that will reach all your learners.
Relate content to knowledge your students already possess. Use what they know to get them where you want and need them to go!
Strong and continually engagement of diverse learners is best accomplished by approaches that are holistic.
Best practices are both meaningful, acknowledge and learners' differences.

Multicultural education is a progressive holistic learner-centered approach to education which endeavors to enlighten learners of all ethnic, religious, SES backgrounds. It is inclusive and embracing. It is validating!
It acknowledges and values cultural differences of its members while being sensitive to how this impacts their attitudes, dispositions and styles of learning. Culturally responsive teaching cultivates a climate of RESPECT for ALL!
Content- must be thorough, accurate and acknowledge the accomplishments and perspectives of all groups.
Teaching Materials- Must be varied and diverse. They should also be examined to ensure that they are free of bias.
Culturally sensitive environments:
Encourage intrinsic motivation, when students feel that what they are learning adds value to their lives they plug in.

More Evidence
Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings coined the phrase
"Culturally relevant pedagogy"
to describe her theory on educational equity. It espouses tenets similar to multicultural pedagogy. The three features that all culturally relevant programs must ensure:
Students must experience academic success.
Students must develop and/or maintain cultural competence.
Students must develop a critical consciousness.
Many ethnic minority students perceive school as a place where they cannot be themselves because their culture is not valued in schools. Ladson-Billings contends, teachers who use culturally relevant pedagogy provide students with a curriculum that builds on their prior knowledge and cultural experiences.

Leading scholar in the field of multicultural education since the 1970s. Dr. Banks asserts there re five dimensions of multiculturalism:
Content Integration-
Injecting the content reflecting diverse cultures is the important beginning.
Knowledge Construction-
Teachers help students construct meaning. Make them think!
Equity Pedagogy-
Diversify teaching methods to enable both genders and members from diverse racial groups to achieve success (learning styles).
Prejudice and bias reduction
- Reflect on biases your biases.Select unbiased materials. Help children develop positive attitudes about diversity because we're ALL DIFFERENT!
Change the school culture-
Be inclusive!
