What is "newsworthy"?
The media has the power to define us through their influence as gatekeepers, their political bias, and society's reliance on social media.

Negative Effects of Social Media
Social media can have a negative effect on society because it changed the values of society, raised a whole new concern about privacy and it takes away from more important tasks.
It has changed the values of society.
In previous decades, the most important values for society were friends and family.... now (especially for teenagers) they have shifted to fame and fortune.
It is time consuming.
Kids and teenagers nowadays spend most of their time online... time that should be spent doing more productive things such as exercising or doing homework.

Elise's Story
"So why do we spend hours of our life cyberstalking people we either hate or will never speak to? I couldn't tell you. I wish I could say it's because we have nothing better to do, but we actually do. We just chose to do this instead. With skyrocketing amounts of data usage, our self-esteem levels plunge, and for what? To refresh repeatedly hoping someone acknowledges the fact that we post funny memes about returning to school on Monday? I'm tired of wasting my time obsessing my dependency on social media attention."
It raises a whole new privacy question: Is anything really private anymore?
Between August and September 2014, a total of 26 celebrities had private photos of them leaked on social media sites.

What do YOU think?
Do you believe that we will ever become less dependent on the media? If so, how we will become this way?
Positive Effects of Social Media

Media has defined us for years through...
"A story published in the paper July 29, 1942, about the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto. The story bore the headline “Warsaw Fears Extermination,” was published on Page 7, and was not even a stand-alone story, instead consisting of a handful of paragraphs nestled next to an ad for Emerson spinet pianos.”
In 1950, during the Korean War, only 9% of American homes had a television. By 1966, this figure jumped to 93%.
The images the public saw on their televisions enraged them and made many of them cry out for withdrawal from the war.
“I want you to feel what I felt. I want you to know why story-truth is truer sometimes than happening-truth.”
->Tim O'Brien, The Things They Carried
“In any war story, but especially a true one, it's difficult to separate what happened from what seemed to happen. What seems to happen becomes its own happening and has to be told that way. The angles of vision are skewed.”
->Tim O'Brien, The Things They Carried

"Just as we teach our children how to ride a bike, we need to teach them how to navigate social media and make the right moves that will help them. The physical world is similar to the virtual world in many cases. It's about being aware. We can prevent many debacles if we're educated."

“I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy… when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority… The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), lowest common denominator programming... but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance”
