Genetically Modified Organisms
How it works:
Taking a gene from one organism and inserting it into another
A process of cutting the gene which codes for the trait of interest from the foreign organism and pasting this gene into the genome of the organism that you want to alter
What is a GMO?

"Genetically Modified Organism"
This includes plants and animals that have been genetically engineered with bacteria,DNA, viruses and other plants and animals.
Why they're used:
Pesticide resistance
Herbicide tolerance(Fields can be sprayed without affecting crops)
Increased productivity
Temperature resistant
Disease resistance
Drought resistance
Increased shelf life

DNA Discovered
1973: Recombinant DNA created (man made)
1980: First GMO patent issue
1994: Tomato approved by FDA
GMO's first enter grocery stores
1999: GMO crops dominate
2003: GMO crops resistant to pests

The safety of GMO foods is still unproven
Possible allergens introduced (new gene= new protein)
Possible lower nutritional value of some foods
Doing little so far to help with the world's hunger

Each GMO may have its own risks to humans
Tests have been proven that GMO foods have a negative effect on the body
The increased use/reduced effectiveness of chemicals in agriculture
Risk of spreading into wild populations
Unintended harm to other organisms

Movement of herbicide resistant genes to other kinds of plants
By altering genes amongst plants and animals some think we are "playing god" and that it is wrong

Cold, herbicide drought/ salinity tolerance
Can result in higher yield, with possibly less fertilizer
Better quality of life for workers in less developed countries

Possible increase cost in raising food because of the high costs of creating and patenting GMOs
"The rich will get richer" : major GM companies will continue to expand as demand increases. (ex. Monsanto)
Reducing the world's genetic raw materials needed for future generations
Increased dependence on bio engineered crops

Canada is the third largest producer of GMO foods
Lost Canadian farmers millions of dollars due to major corporations taking over the farming industry
Animals are often fed genetically modified corn and soy based feed
Injecting the animal with growth hormones to increase yield/ size.
Often used in the dairy industry
GM cotton in India:
In the past it was necessary to spray cotton plants with heavy amounts of pesticides
The adoption of GM cotton has reduced pesticide usage by 50%

They do not accept nor reject GMO's up front
