She made the cover story of a broadsheet – a little girl confidently making it to the top of her class despite of being blind. Introduction Jemerson N. Dominguez “…any individuals whose physical, mental, or behavioral performance is so different from the norm--either higher or lower--that additional services are needed to meet the individuals’ needs.” (p. 365) What’s in a Label?  any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological, or anatomical structure or function. Impairment Jemerson N. Dominguez  any restriction or lack (resulting from impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being. Disability Jemerson N. Dominguez  a disadvantage for a given individual, resulting from impairment or disability that limits or prevents the fulfillment of a role that is a normal (depending on the age, sex, and social or cultural factors) for that individual. Handicap Jemerson N. Dominguez  not currently identified as having a disability, are considered to have a greater-that-usual- chance of developing a disability (vulnerable/candidate). Reading, Writing and Math Difficulties

1. Dyslexia – severe impairment in the ability to read and spell.
2. Dysgraphia – involves difficulty in expressing thoughts in writing composition.
3. Dyscalculia – involves difficulty in math computation, also known as (developmental arithmetic disorder). Causes
1. Genetics
2. Subtle difficulties in brain structures and functions
3. Problems during prenatal development or delivery Strategies for working with children who have learning disabilities
1. Take the needs of the child with a learning disability into account during instructional time.
2. Provide accommodations for testing and assignments. 3. Improve organizational and study skills.
4. Work with reading and writing skills.
5. Challenge them to become independent and reach their full potential. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder – is a disability in which children consistently show one or more of these characteristics over a period of time:
1. Inattention
2. Hyperactivity
3. Impulsivity Causes

Low levels of certain neurotransmitters
Prenatal and post natal abnormalities

Monitor whether the child’s stimulant medication is working effectively.
Read and simplify instructions.
Use behavior management strategies.
Provide opportunities for students to get up and move around.
Break assignments into shorter segments.
