He's Blind for a Reason, You Know.
By: Erieane Brooks

For what reason(s)do authors choose to make characters blind in literature?
Reasons why authors choose to make characters blind in literature is to show readers that although the person has a disability, he/she has a great gift or special power that those who can see probably do not. Another reason is that the character might be too blind to realize something.

Why Blind Characters?
Blindness is metaphorical, a failure (or in some cases, “the ability”) to see---reality, love, truth etc.
Oedipus Rex
Foster explained why most authors use blind characters by telling the story of “Oedipus the Rex”. (written by Sophocles which is originally a play). He explains how a blind man knows the truth about King Oedipus & family. Even though the man is blind, we can see that he has a special gift.
Daredevil
How It Connects
This is a movie about a computer hacker named Neo. Another hacker named Morpheus teaches Neo that "the real world" is a computer program that keeps humans in the dark. Those who wear sunglasses, hides their eyes to dehuminaze them. Morpheus Lets Neo choose pills & they are reflected in his sunglasses, showing two choices of how to see the world.
As a child, Matt (Daredevil) was blinded after toxic waste was spilled over his eyes while he was taking a shortcut home from school after discovering that his father, former boxer Jack "The Devil" Murdock, became an enforcer for a local mobster. The accident enhanced his other senses and gave him a sonar that allowed him to "see" through sonic vibrations. He sharpened his senses to train himself in martial arts. His father was murdered by the mobster he was working for & to avenge his father's death, Matt used his abilities to become a crime-fighter known as "Daredevil", who operates in Hell's Kitchen, going after the criminals that escape the conventional means of justice.
