American Oxygen is part of Rihanna's next album in progress, R8. Over the course of a year, it was written by Alex Da Kid, Candice Pillay, Sam Harris, and Rihanna, with inspiration from "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen. The connection between the song and Rihanna's life is told in the song through an immigrant(Rihanna) and how the immigrant starts with a "nickel" and builds an "empire", basically saying upward mobility is very possible.

It is fairly similar to the literal meaning, however it can be interpreted that when we breathe in "American Oxygen", we now can live the "American Dream", anyone can achieve anything through hard work and dedication, hence America is the Land of Opportunity.
The connection is that many people that have built our society have started out with nothing and worked their way to get where they are today, they shaped our country and basically embraced the American Dream, where one can start with nothing but make it to the top of the pyramid.
