MUSCULAR SYSTEM Cardiac Muscles 3 types of muscles Skeletal muscles Smooth muscles The muscle of the Heart itself Different from other muscels because they form branching fibers Connected to each other and not a bone Makes up approximately 40 percent of the adult body weight Composed of long muscle fibers Often called the volutary muscle Includes the muscles that make up the bodies internal organs The digestive track is made of smooth muscles Controlled by the nervous system and hormones Cannot consciously move them so they are often called the involutary muscles MUscles AFfect many other systems Digestive system Skeletal System Cardiovascular system Nervous system Endocrine System Smooth muscles push food down the esophagus Muscles attach to bone to provide support Cardiac muscles make up the heart and pump blood throughout the body The brain controls the involuntary muscles Some muscles are controlled by hormones Muscular diseases Beeker's Muscular Distrophy Inherited Muscles slowly worsen resulting in weakness all over the body especially in legs and pelvis 3-6 people out of every 100,000 contract BMD Fibrodysplasia Ossificans progressive Tendons and muscles tissue is gradually replaced by bone. Results in severe loss of mobility If muscle is bruised then it will morph into bone 1 in 2,000,000 are affectd Duchenne Muscular Distrophy (DMD) 1 of 3500 males are affected In a wheel chair by the age of 12 Life expentancy is only to the late teens to early 20's muscles are slowly weakened until they can do anything All of these diseases are uncurable Working together Muscles can only pull so in order to have a full range of motion you must use a group of muscles. keeping healthy Regular exercise can slow down the natural decrease of muscle tissue that comes with age A healthy diet that consists of foods that are low in fat, low in cholesterol and high in fiber Drinking a lot of water can also help Fun facts There are muscles in the root of your hair that give you goose- bumps. It takes 17 muscles to smile and 42 muscles to frown The hardest working muscle is the eye The largest muscle in the body is the glutius maximus The smallest muscle in your body is the stapedius located in the ear.
