Transcript of Film Studies: Section A + B

From your experience, why do
audiences still choose to go to the cinema? Section A: One of the biggest reasons people still decide to go to the cinema is due to the fact that the technology has improved for example:

The films are in better quality (image/visuals)
Sound is now surround sound and much louder than previously
Films are now produced in 3D/IMAX Technology Many people go to the cinema to get the social expreience as it is now considered as an activity to go out and enjoy with family and friend. People buy into the idea of luxury there are now a few cinemas around the UK that provides customers with a luxorious experience when they are watching a film e.g. alternative cinemas in London have a variety of benefits such as; comfier chairs, waiters serving customers food and drinks, dining experience and private screenings. Social Experience Going to the cinema also enables audiences preview or watch trailers of up and coming movies that are soon to be released in cinema. These previews/trailers will suit the genre of the film they are watching, therefore, audiences are now informed of what other films will be released soon and can decide to go and watch them at a later date. Trailers/Previews An example of how technology has changed within cinema is the cinema Vue: A personal experience from visiting the cinema is when I went to see 'The Hunger Games' with a group of friends - on this day we chose the VIP seats due to the fact that they are better seats, they are much comfier and their is more room for people to sit - but the main reason we chose these seats was because the cinema was full and they were the only ones available. We were all really excited to watch this film as it had very good promotion and was advertised a lot on social media and TV; however, what spoiled this experience was the fact that it was so packed their were a lot of chatty people in the cinema who would constantly speak during the film - in addition to this, there was a young girl sitting on the row behind who continuously kicked the back of my chair. Personal Experience Section A: How and why do stars attract audiences? This an example in the cinema 'Vue' on their website they illustrate that they now have improved picture quality and sound quality which could easily be the decision maker to why audiences will go to the cinema as its difficult to get this kind of quality at home watching a pirated film. Will Smith Will Smith (born September 25, 1968), is an American actor, producer, and rapper. He has enjoyed success in television, film and music. In April 2007, Newsweek called him the most powerful actor in Hollywood. Smith has been nominated for four Golden Globe Awards, two Academy Awards, and has won four Grammy Awards.

In this prezi I will look at why Will Smith attracts such a wide audience Career Will Smith started his career as a hip hop artist duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince with their friend Jeffrey "DJ Jazzy Jeff" Townes as turntablist and producer. The three were known to perform very comedic and humorous songs, they eventually went on to win a Grammy Award in 1988 in the Rap Category. In 1990 NBC created a sitcom about Will Smith's career called 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-air' and was what started his acting career. The show was successful and began his acting career. Smith set for himself the goal of becoming "the biggest movie star in the world," studying box office successes' common characteristics The show made Will Smith a young star and was soon idolized by a large audience of young people. The breakthrough in Will Smith's career was in 1996, Smith starred as part of an ensemble cast in Roland Emmerich's Independence Day. The film was a massive blockbuster, becoming the second highest grossing film in history at the time and establishing Smith as a prime box office draw. He later struck gold again in the summer of 1997 alongside Tommy Lee Jones in the summer hit Men in Black playing Agent J. In 1998, Smith starred with Gene Hackman in Enemy of the State. Career: Breakthrough Later that month, Smith starred in the film I Am Legend, released December 14, 2007. Despite marginally positive reviews, its opening was the largest ever for a film released in the United States during December. Smith himself has said that he considers the film to be "aggressively unique". Since then he has been in massive blockbusters such as I am Legend, Hitch, The Pursuit of Happiness and Men in Black III Due to his massive success within the film industry and the amount of awards he has won, Will Smith is now a well known actor and a big Hollywood star therefore this is one of the main reasons how he can attract audiences because people immediately think of the successful films he has been in. As a result Will Smith is idolized by both men and woman; men in terms of they want to be like him, they aspire to reach his level of success, and woman in terms of that they admire him and are attracted to him. Within his career he has built up this great and humorous persona that many people love and will be a reason they will go to see a film with him in it. In addition to this, he attracts old and new audiences e.g. children who grew up watching 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air' now will go to see his films in the cinema however there are also new generations of people who will go to watch him in movies as he varies the genre of films he stares e.g. Sharktale - iRobot, in addition the series of 'TFOB' now airs on kids television channels such as 'Nickelodean'. Stuff with education motivation speach nickelodean awards running and reading you will learn how to not quit when things get hard in your life (running) - no problem you can have that no one has already solved in a book (reading). Richard Dyer Theory Social Phenomenon How stars are understood as fulfilling a social and cultural function Stars as signs is about the problems associated with a star and a particular representation of a character in a film and how the two interact. Construction
Dyer starts by establishing the basic principles of constructiveness and places this in an analysis of its place within the relation of production and consumption. The star paradigm - the star and actor are different entities the media helps create "the star" - they create a manufactured product - image control The search for vehicles for the furtherance of the star Stars as commodity (a product something you sell) dr no ursala To what extent do additional ways of making money affect the kind of film that Hollywood makes. Stars are commodities who are produced and consumed on the strength of their meanings. Stars are a form of capital (money), investment, the market (used to sell films), Their only value resides in what meanings and effects they have - they embody social values - ideas about life, social types, sex roles

- Does the stars image confirm societies view or rebel against it. Johnny Depp - Rebel challenges social norms, tattoos - Denzel Washington/Will Smith - mainstream hegemonic norms (family man, expressive towards education) Johnny Depp oppositional character, divorced. Section B: To what extent do additional ways of making money affect the kind of films that Hollywood makes? Increased amount of animated films as it is much easier to make toys for the films and to market the product further in things such as Happy Meals. They know that children will want the toys and their parents are likely to pay for them.
Technology is improving e.g. more social media sites therefore they are able to market films through this.
They know that star power is a succesful way to earn money on a film therefore when there is an increase in popularity around a certain actor a number of movies with them in it will be released within a short space of time. e.g. Natalie Portman Black Swan - Thor - No Strings Attached - Your Highness were all released in the same year.
A lot of video games are made after a film is released however video games are becoming so popular Video games becoming inspirations for movies e.g. Assasin's Creed Madagascar 3 Video games

Yes:
Appeal to wider audiences
Consider the story line, target audience: if they create a film that will appeal to a wider audience they can be more successful e.g. a vast majority of films produced in the UK link to heritage, nationality - its not globally appealing
Utilize new distribution methods e.g. social media, the internet, TV etc
Take advantage of the developing technology consider special effects and animation that is now available
More funding = bigger budgets for film makers - a vast majority of film makers in the UK have minimal funding therefore struggling during post production, production distribution, and exhibition.
Explore star power: don't just get the same British actors in every movie No:
The American Film industry has grown so much it may be difficult to compete
They get more funding for their films enabling them to create big blockbusters that will be successful all around the world. This also benefits them in terms of special effects, star power etc.
Hollywood have created this image - we have grown up with American programmes/films e.g. Disney therefore we aspire to have lives like ones depicted in Hollywood Films
