Exposition Chapter 1 - 6
Jonas was frightened about the Ceremony of Twelve. He remembered that plane flew over the community and he found out that "frightened" was not precise word according to the precision of language. Jonas and his family talked about the day and their feeling while they are having supper, Jonas followed the precision of language and decided that he was feeling apprehensive. Every morning, the family unit discuss about their dream and Jonas experienced Stirring. Mother gives him a pill and the Stirrings were gone when Jonas took it. It talks about Caleb, the child who accidentally died falling to the river. In the Ceremony, the book tells us what do the children receive each year.
Rising Action Chapter 9 - 18
He started to Receive joyful and painful memories from the Giver. Jonas received the Giver's favorite memory which was the memory of Love and Grandparent. He started to see colors that nobody else except for the Giver and himself can experience. Jonas realized that he can Give the memories to Gabriel. He started to see his community in a different way, for instance when his friends were playing "the game of the good guy and the bad guy", Jonas recognized it as a game of war.
Inciting Event Chapter 8
In the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas was selected to be the Receiver.
Climax Chapter 19 - 20
Jonas saw the Record of the release of the smaller twin done by Father because he was curious what release meant. He realized what release really meant and that Father was hiding the truth because it was his job. The Giver planned the escape for Jonas to find the Elsewhere.
Falling Action Chapter 21 - 22
Jonas escaped the Community when the whole Community was in the Ceremony. He remembered Father announcing Gabriel will be released because he didn't stop crying the night when Jonas was staying in the Annex room with the Giver. Jonas decided to take Gabriel to the long journey to the Elsewhere. Community send the planes to search for them, Jonas made Gabriel and himself "cold" with the memory of snow so that the searcher won't find them. Jonas and Gabriel starved because they ran out of food that they stole from the Food Service. Jonas and Gabriel experience lots of things: forest, snow, rain, animals, starving.
Resolution/Denoument Chapter 23
Jonas felt very weak but he knew that the Elsewhere was not far away. It started to snow, and Jonas talked to Gabriel about the snow. The baby didn't answer because he became weak. The bicycle stopped, and Jonas could no longer ride on it. Jonas was exhausted, and he suddenly felt happy, remembering about his family, friends, and the Giver. Using the last bit of energy, Jonas reached the top of the hill and found the sled there. Jonas started down riding the sled. Jonas realized that he knew this place: yellow, red, and blue lights on the tree inside of a house. He heard people singing from the house, and he thought he heard the music behind him.
