Transcript of Nervous System

Nervous System
Nervous System
A system in our body that sends messages to and from the brain
3 parts of the Nervous System
Cerebrum
Biggest part of the brain
Cerebellum
The cerebellum is a balancing act.
Medulla
Also known as brain stem
Grade 5- Mr. deCastro
1.
The Brain
- the command center of communication
Weighs about 3 lbs.
Cerebrum
,
Cerebellum
,
Medulla
Makes up 85% of the weight
Part of the brain deals with logic
Thinking part of the brain

Controls voluntary muscles
Memory lives here-short and long term
It controls balance, movement, and coordination.
Get you to walk, jog, play sports, etc.
Small but very powerful
Connects the rest of the brain to the spinal cord
In charge of everything your body needs to stay alive- involuntary such as breathing and circulation
2. The Spinal Cord
- cord in our spine made of nerves that branch out to all parts of the body
Highway of information
What happens when someone is paralyzed?

loss of muscle function for one or more muscles. Can also have a loss of feeling in an area.
3. Nerves and Neurons
- "wires" that send messages to and from all parts of the body.
They are like the road for information to travel on
Stimulus
- any change in the environment.
Sensory Neurons
- neurons leading to our senses. It tells us when there is something going on in the environment.

Motor Neurons
- lead to the muscles and cause them to react.
2 Kinds of Neurons
Sensory Neurons
- neurons leading to our senses. It takes information from the outside world to the brain.
-touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound
Motor Neurons
- lead to the muscles and cause them to react.
The human brain many contain up to one trillion neurons

Ways to care for the Nervous System
1. Protect your head and spinal cord- use a helmet
2. Do not use drugs
3. Do not overload your senses
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!
Typically, the spinal cord will be
severed
