Pros Photo editing has changed the way we look at the world. it has brought so much knowledge and beauty to us. Now we are able to view photography in a different way. Photo editing makes the
unimaginable possible. It makes us able to take control of our photographs and change them however we want to. Bibliography How has Photo Manipulation had an impact on us and the world? By: Saskia Schneider Photoshop was one of the first ever photo editing software created by the brothers John and Thomas Knoll in 1987. Thomas was a pHD student at the University of Michigan and began writing a program on his McIntosh Plus (the third model of computers in the McIntosh line) to display grey scale pictures on a monochrome display called Display. This caught his brother John's attention and he recommended Thomas to turn it into a image editing program. It took the brothers six months to work on the program. After giving a demonstration of their creation at Apple and Adobe, Adobe decided to purchase the license and in 1990 the first Adobe Photoshop was released. Photoshop is the current market leader for image manipulation software and is considered an industry standard. More than 90 % of creative professionals have Adobe Photoshop software on their desktops. It is deceiving us. It tells us what beauty is and actually misleads us into thinking that only if you beautiful you can fit into society. Photo editing can make someone look good or bad. It can distort bodies in a none artistic way through commercial advertising. In these ads necks are made longer, eyes made bigger, and waists are slimmed down. This creates a look that is impossible to achieve even by models. Photoshop is one of the most commonly used pieces of software by professionals and average computer users. Professional photographers and editors say that Photoshop is a good thing and has helped them deliver excellent results in their work. But the list of celebrities involved in manipulation imaginary is huge. This list includes people like Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Clarkson. Muscle tone is added, inches erased away from hips, waist, thighs, arms, and skin tone is lightened. As you can see in the pictures editors erased hips, and thighs of Kelly. They also made her arms and cheeks thinner. In the photo of Beyonce someone made her skin and hair lighter. All these things are done to manipulate viewers into thinking celebrities are the perfect person, even though they are just like you and me. Another example of image manipulation is shows from recent research. A model Filippia Hamilton of size 4 who worked for Ralph Lauren appeared deformed in a company ad in Japan, her head appeared larger than her waist. The model says she was fired for being to fat. They told her that she did not fit into their designer clothing anymore. As shown you can see that the model was already very thin and that they just thought she looked fat because of the editing of her head. Ralph Lauren refuted her charges and took the responsibility for the manipulation of the image in the ad. Image manipulation has been used to persuade or deceive viewers and improve story-telling and self-expression. The range of changes that photo editors can make varies from
- correcting background lighting, remove red eyes to - transforming a human model's body type, removing people, combining images. The technology and software available today like Photoshop allows amateur and professional photographers alike to alter their shots. Citations about impact of Photoshop Using Photoshop as routine part of the process
Becky Olstad, Photography Instructor at The Art Institutes International Minesolta: "There is a a general misconception that the use of Photoshop inherently means manipulation. It allows us to control exposure, contrast, color balance - things that are routinely controlled in a traditional darkroom."
Using Photoshop to create unreal pictures
Fabio Apelbaum, Director of Graphic Arts at a television station: "When you look at a magazine, 98 % of what you see in the fashion industry is unreal. We have taken the human beauty to an extreme that beauty itself can complete with." Photo manipulation- Media Photo manipulation can give magazines creative and dramatic visual boosts and can generate sales. That is the reason why its so tempting. Editors want the images to grab many peoples attention. Photo editing is good until a certain point. Editing light and contrast is an example but changing skin color, editing body shape like hips, thighs, stomach, and chest is going over the line. It's as if people could just change your skin color to make it look appealing and attractive for other people eyes. Its actually misleading viewers and not showing the truth. Types of digital image manipulation History of Photoshop History - image manipulation prior to Photoshop Prior to Photoshop image manipulation was achieved by retouching with ink, paint, piecing photos or negatives together in the darkroom, scratching Polaroids or airbrushing photos. Results were similar to digital manipulation but much harder to create. An early example of manipulating photos was in the early 1860s, when a photo of Abraham Lincoln was modified using the body from a portrait of John C. Calhoun and the head of Abraham Lincoln from a portrait by M. Brady. 1. Technical retouching
Manipulation to restore or enhance photos like adjusting colours, contrast, white balance, sharpness, removing elements or visible flaws on skin or materials
2. Creative retouching
Use as art form or commercial use to create more interesting creative images for advertisements. Creative retouching for fashion, beauty, advertising, image-composting. My Proposal My essential question was "How has Photo Manipulation had an impact on us and the world".I found from researching that photo editing was used since the invention of Photography. For example a photo of the 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln was photo edited in the 1860s. Back then they didn't have computer so they used ink retouching, paint, double-exposure in a dark room to manipulate his body. So, photo editing has been used since the the mid 1800s and is still widely used all over the world. Throughout my Prezi presentation I have learned that Photo manipulation is used in magazines, posters and advertisements. It also has a huge impact on girls and body image because society makes them believe having the perfect body is the only way of fitting in. Photo manipulation is the application of image editing techniques to photos in order to create an illusion.Photo manipulation has become widespread on the media. It is influences our opinions on political parties, body images, celebrities etc. Due to this it's become a controversial issue. Photo manipulation is used to broadly adjust contrast/brightness and to fix problems such as glare and red eye. However how far can we take this? Photo editing is acceptable until a certain point. Removing distracting items from the background as long as its not disrespecting the situation in the photo. They think that they will only be accepted in society if they have the perfect body. So, they work out and lose weight without thinking of their health and wellness. Their only focus is weight loss and its becoming an obsession. More women are affected than men. The most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia is when people have a fear of gaining weight and have a distorted few on their body size. Many teens with anorexia restrict eating through dieting, fasting, or excessive exercise. Others may start binge eating, which is forcing themselves to vomit up their food using excessive exercise and laxatives. Bulimia is similar to anorexia. Someone with bulimia may excessively eat or extreme exercise forcing themselves to vomit, and prevent weight gain. Although these disorders are very similar, people with anorexia are usually very thin and underweight while people with bulimia are usually of normal weight or overweight. The media is a big part of photo manipulation and its usually used in every magazine. Photo manipulation has pros and cons. It makes photographers and editors able to creatively and artistically change their photo and make them creative photos of fantasy . However photo editing also has a harmful side. When photos are manipulated its damaging our society. Advertisers are not trying to be artistic, they are attempting to change the image of beauty in the minds of the viewers. But this look is not achievable not even for actual models. Because of this many people become disorders like Bulimia and Anorexia to deal with the problem. Photo manipulation has a huge impact on these peoples lives as well. They think that if they are skinny everything will be better, however they don't know that these disorders can affect their whole body. Without treatment 20% of people with eating disorders will die. After making my project I have learned that Photo manipulation has a magnificent impact on us people. The Photoshop effect This 5 minute video shows the difference between a manipulated photo and a real photo. It shows the truth about Adobe Photoshop and photo retouch.
