Thoughts Aloud
The evacuee that comes to live with Enid’s family is called Alfie, he is 13 and he is from a very poor family. He is always hungry; in fact Enid’s mother says he will eat them out of house and home. He is very clever and at school he gets top marks for all his work. He has made lots of friends at school and is very helpful at home in the house.
Enid is 12 years old and lives with her parents in a little village in the Welsh valleys. One day her mother tells her that an evacuee is going to come and live with them. Enid is an only child and spoilt. She is not happy as she has a nice home, lots of toys and she doesn’t want to share her life with anyone else.

Plenary...
The local shopkeeper is an elderly lady and very often bad tempered. She doesn’t like the evacuees. She thinks they are all thieves and hooligans. She doesn’t trust them and suspects they are stealing from her shop.
Enid’s father, Jack always wanted a son but he and his wife couldn’t have any more children. He really likes Alfie because they have a lot in common for example Alfie is interested in football. He thinks that Alfie is very polite and he is impressed with how helpful he is around the house and how well he does at school.

Enid is jealous of all the attention that Alfie gets and decides to get her own back. She steals something from the local shop and hides it in Alfie’s satchel. She then tells the shop keeper that she thinks Alfie has been stealing food and sweets from the local shop. The shop Keeper goes to her house to report the theft to her father Jack, who is sure that Alfie would never do such a terrible thing. However, when Alfie’s satchel is searched, the stolen item is found. Jack is furious and he tells Alfie that he must return to London.
