Dropping the Ball
[A] What was his idea
In 1590, someone climbed to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and dropped two balls. The two balls had different masses. They were similarly shaped and also had similar densities. Until this person completed this experiment, it was commonly believed that heavier objects fell faster than lighter ones. He was out prove this wrong. He believed the force of gravity would be the same on the different objects.
[B] Who Worked On This Experiment?
It is popularly suggested that Galileo was the first to conduct this experiment. However, others have also conducted this experiment. These include and are not limited to Albert Einstein, University of Virginia, and University of Michigan students.
In 1932, Apollo 15 astronaut, David Scott conducted the experiment on the moon. He was surprised to find that do to the lack of air resistance, a 16 oz hammer fell to the ground at the same time as a feather.
[C] When & Where
This experiment is believed to have first been conducted in 1590 Italy. It was an amazing breakthrough. As mentioned before, people used to believe heavier/bigger objects would fall faster than a smaller one. When he showed them his results they realized the force of gravity was the same on both objects. Gravity was pulling them to the ground at the same rate.
[D] How It Helped
Because of the results of this experiment, we understand more. We learned how air resistance works. It helped us in the form of making parachutes, planes, and other airborne objects.
This also inspired many to repeat this experiment. He kept his experiment accurate with numerical measurments making it easy for us to understand today.
