Many problems don't require ever thinking direction. I walk 50 m and then walk a further 30 m, what is the total distance walked? Simple, no? How about this one? I am paddling my canoe on a river. I can paddle at 3 m/s and the river is moving at 1 m/s. How quickly am I covering ground? What are we missing? Direction! The quantities representing the speeds of the canoe and the river are not sufficient as direction plays an important part in the outcome of this problem. A quantity that consists of both numerical size (magnitude) and a direction is called a ... Vector
