Barbara Mallory Structures of Animal and Plant Cells Taking a Look at Plant Cells
Under a Microscope
The following materials are needed for this experiment:
1. microscope
2. elodea leaf
3. slides
4. water Figure A is what a plant cell would look like under the microscope. Procedure: Cut a peace of leaf and put the sample on a glass slide. Put a couple of drops of water on the leaf sample then place under the microscope for viewing. Taking a Look at Animal Cells
Under the Microscope Designing a 3D Model of Animal and Plant Cells To further engage the students in learning, they would design a model of a plant or animal cell and present the model to the class. Students should be creative by using a variety of materials that will display what each cell would look like. Be sure to label. Here are some examples: Plant Cell Animal Cell Figure A:
The student used food to display the parts of a plant cell Figure B: The student used clay to structure of an animal cell. The following materials are needed for this experiment:
1. microscope
2. cheek cells
3. cotton swabs
3. slides
4. iodine dye Procedure:
Rub the inside of your cheek with a cotton swap. Rub the cotton swab on a glass slide and put a couple of drops of dye on the on the slide. Place slide under the microscope for viewing. Students can view their own cheek cells under
the microscope.Students will notice how their cells are round or irregular shaped. The dense color is the nucleus and the cell
membrane is on the outside of the cell.
