"The wise learn many things from their enemies." "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes." The previous quote was by Walt Whitman, and relates to page eight of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Background on this Quote Connection to Fahrenheit 451 The connection that we made from the Fahrenheit 451 to the quote by Walt Whitman is that Montag (the main character in the story Fahrenheit 451) constantly contradicts himself, as does the speaker of the quote. For example, on page 8 in F.451, Montag spends a lot of time thinking about his earlier conversation with Clarisse, and is constantly questioning himself and contradicting himself. This shows how F. 451 relates to Walt Whitman's quote. By Eileen and Maeve Fahrenheit 451 Walter Whitman lived from 1819 to 1892. He was an essayist, American poet, humanist, and a journalist. His works were published into over twenty-five different languages! We think what Walt was trying to say in his quote was that man contradicts himself all the time, sometimes without even knowing. Pictures Relating to Allusion #1 Connections to Fahrenheit 451 The previous quote was by Aristophanes and relates to page 145 of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Background on this Quote Aristophanes lived from 448 to 385 B.C.E . He was a Greek writer. Aristophanes was born into a wealthy family and wrote many comedies, some of which still exist. We think that what Aristophanes meant by this quote was that wise people often times mot only think of their enemies as evil and horrid people, but as mentors. The connection that we made from the Fahrenheit 451 to the quote by Aristophanes is Montag learned from Beatty (the chief fireman in which Montag betrays) and then was able to outsmart him. Montag listened to Beatty, and somehow seemed to pull apart Beatty's words and use them against him.
