By: Yoona Eom Evolution - What is it? Natural Selection Over Production Just-A-Note Evolution: The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species. Over Production: In some ways, the 5 factors may seem very similar to each other, but through this project i got to know a lot more about each part. Mod 3 Natural Selection the gradual change in a species over time My Definition: the change found in a species after a short or long period of time Natural Selection: My Definition: The strongest survive. In other words, if some organisms of a species have certain physical characteristics fit for that particular environment, then they will survive and have offspring better than those who don't have those same characteristics. How does Natural Selection lead to Evolution? There are five factors that effect natural selection. My Definition: production in excess of need or stipulated amount when an organism produces way more offspring than needed Real Life Example Salmon and sea turtles over produce their offspring because they know that many will not survive. Honeycreepers are all the same birds, but they have different beaks that help each in eating the different foods they eat. an organism possessing characteristic(s) as a result of mutation the preferential survival and reproduction or preferential elimination of individuals with certain genotypes (genetic compositions), by means of natural or artificial controlling factors. a difference in structure, form, or function of organisms of the same species rivalry between two or more organisms for an object desired in common two or more organisms fighting for needs and wants such as food, shelter, and mates a form or structure modified to fit a changed environment a characteristic developed in an organism that helps to survive in their environment Two bucks compete during the mating season for the doe. A lion and some hyenas are competing for their food source. The first one is an example of intraspecific competition because two organisms of the same species are competing for a common need/want. The second one is an example of interspecific competition because two different species are fighting for the same thing. Although these are all pigeons, they all have different characteristics, such as longer feathers, puffier breasts, or longer necks. This is an example of horse variation be cause although these are all horses, their structure, such as shorter legs or larger bodies, will impact the way they live. the characteristics of a certain species that help survive stay for more generations, while the ones that don't help disappear Looking at the picture, we can infer that the giraffe with the longer neck got more food. Therefore, the characteristic of having short necks would have disappeared over the years so that giraffes can survive better. These are peppered moths that many people know about. Before the industrial revolution, the ivory colored ones survived more because they camouflaged with the lighter colored trees. But after the industrial revolution, the trees got stained in black and the darker colored ones survived better. Many people relate evolution to humans changing from monkeys to humans, but that's up to you to believe. BUT, there are other ways evolution is seen in the world, and it may not be in the way we think it is. Since natural selection basically means the strongest survive, the strongest has to appear first. In order for this to happen, organisms change over time to fit that environment. As we know, evolution is change in a species over time, so this would be evolution. For example, "Darwin's Finches" have differently shaped beaks although they are the "same species." These particular beaks help them survive in different environments. But, in order to get to that point, they would've had to change over a long period of time. Eventually, in order for the strongest to survive, organisms must change, so this is why natural selection leads to evolution. ...and its parts When i started this project i didnt know the difference between variation and selection and natural selection. They all seemed simliar!!I think i get it now. :) I hope you enjoyed this presentation! The End
