Made up of 330 Islands and 500 reefs.
Capital is Suva.
Speak English, Fijian, and Hindustani.
Viti Levu (Big Fiji), Vanua Levu (Big Land) Background Information The first settlers were the Lapita who arrived in 1500 BCE.
2500 years later, Polynesians invaded Fiji.
In 1643, Abel Tasman became the first European to visit Fiji.
1800's saw an increase in interaction between Fijian society and the westerners. History of Fiji Economy Exports clothing, fish and sugar
Imports food, machinery, cars, and petroleum
Raise cattle and chickens
Grow coconuts and sugar cane

More than half of Fiji's people are Melanesian descent.
1/3 are imported laborers from India.
Fiji's population group is Chinese, European, Micronesian, and Polynesian.
