Theme vs. Main Idea
One of the more difficult things we will work with this year will be differentiating between theme and main idea. One of the best ways for us to get better at telling the difference between themes and main ideas is to look at some popular stories and songs and extract the themes from them.

Often times, songwriters want to convey a larger mesage to listeners through their lyrics. Most of us can think of songs that mean something special to us. The reason these songs stick with us or mean something special is because they contain themes that relate to our lives.
Music
We have looked at different films as a class in an attempt to differentiate between topic/main idea and theme. Now that we understand how these two things are different from each other, we can begin to work on extracting theme. We will do this by looking at some of the themes present in music and

We will listen to "I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack, a song that has touched many hearts throughout the years, and see if we can extract the theme.

Choose an excerpt from the lyrics that you can use to explain the theme to the class
