Rhetorical Precis for Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus, a famous actress/singer, contributed the biggest role in the song "wrecking ball" (2013), composed by Stephen Richard Moccio. Whether or not she sang it to send a message to someone, it is something only she knows for sure, she talks about how they chained their hearts in vain and how she's now heartbroken. Miley's purpose is to expresses herself and what she felt about her breakup with Liam Hemsworth, she states indirect lyrics for her ex in this music video. She sung with emotional detachment to this song for him and her audience who may not be sure of what she's feeling and what a breakup might seem like.
Song Background
The official second single from Miley Cyrus' new studio album "Bangerz", produced by Dr. Luke and Cirkut, co-written by Sacha Skarbek, Stephan Moccio, Dr. Luke, Maureen Anne McDonald and Henry Russell Walter, portrays Cyrus' feeling from a recent breakup.

Verse 1
We clawed, we chained our hearts in vain
We jumped never asking why
We kissed, I fell under your spell.
A love no one could deny

Annotation:Imagery, internal rhyme, apostrophe ; its contradictory
“we” kissed, and “I” fell, which signals to be a one sided relationship. Shows she is vulnerable
You can picture clawing and chains. Also its contradictory because “we clawed we chained our hearts in vain” describes damage and restriction rather than falling in love

Pre-Hook
Don't you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can't live a lie, running for my life
I will always want you
Annotation: Anaphora- repeats “I” at beginning of every sentence. She’s basically saying that even though she got hurt, she’ll always want him. Unconditional love?

Hook 1
I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was wreck me
Yeah, you, you wreck me
Annotation: Imagery, Simile, juxtaposition
You can picture a wrecking ball & broken walls.
Simile because she compares herself to a wrecking ball & Juxtaposition, 2 contradictory characters. She describes herself as a wrecking ball, yet she’s the one that got wrecked? “All I wanted was to wreck your walls”? Also ironic

Verse 2
I put you high up in the sky
And now, you're not coming down
It slowly turned, you let me burn
And now, we're ashes on the ground
Annotation: Apostrophe, pun, metaphor,
Apostrophe she references her ex a lot. “I put you high up in the sky” is a pun && she uses a metaphor in saying there are ASHES on the ground.

Bridge
I never meant to start a war
I just wanted you to let me in
And instead of using force
I guess I should've let you win
I never meant to start a war
I just wanted you to let me in
I guess I should've let you win
Annotation: Apostrophe, she means that instead of trying so hard, she should’ve just opened up to him. Shes apologizing. Maybe instead of forcing myself into your heart, I should have led you into mine.

Hook 2
I came in like a wrecking ball
Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung
Left me crashing in a blazing fall
All you ever did was wreck me
Yeah, you, you wreck me
Yeah, you, you wreck me
Annotation: Simile, imagery, hyperbole.
Again comparing to a wrecking ball. Imagery because you can picture her swinging, crashing.. & hyperbole because she is kind of exaggerating her pain, maybe?

Comparison
Similarities: In both the lyrics and the music video you can see/ hear her pain.

Differences: The fact that Cyrus is nude in her music video does not relate to her emotional lyrics. Miley also licks a sledge hammer possibly symbolizing that she possibly enjoys the pain, but her lyrics say otherwise.
