History of Investment Banks In Malaysia
Investment banks are established in Malaysia on March 2005. (Bank Negara Malaysia, 2005)
It is introduced by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) with the purpose to strengthen the finance sector
It is licensed to perform investment banking functions by Securities Commission and BNM
The new structure required the merchant banks, stock-broking companies and universal brokers to be transformed into investment banks latest by first quarter of 2007.
In other words, it is the merger of merchant banks, stockbroking companies and discounts houses to become investment bank.
As a point of reference, the conventional role of discount houses can be described as keepers of liquidity for the banking system.
Generally, discount houses specialize in short-term money market operations.
Thus, in order to further restructure the financial sector and to create a more dynamic and strong financial environment, BNM promoted the following merger:
A merchant bank and stockbroking company within the same banking group:
Two stand-alone discount houses with one stockbroking company;
A universal broker (UB) with one discount house.
