NATO April 1949, Canada, and the US joined Belguim, Britian, Denmark, France, Iceland, Itay, Luxenbourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and portugal to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Nations agreed that "an armed attack against one or more of them shall be considered an attack against all of them. postwar period the international community looked to the UN to protect nationa from invasion or destabilization by foreign goverments to maintain world peace The Soviet Union's frequent use of its veto power in the Security Council prevented the UN from effectivly dealing with a number of postwar problems NATO

North Atlantic Treaty organization Loius St. Laurent proposed creating an "ssocition of democratic peace-loving states" to defend Western Europe against attack by the soviet unioun Officals had great interest in st laurents idea
in 1995 the soviet union responded to the formation of NATO by creting the Warsaw Pact a military alliance with its satellite nations in Eastern erope
