Then Jonas and The Giver had a talk
about the Receiver of Memory before
Jon
as, and what had happened to her.
The
Giver told Jonas that she was an
exc
ellent Receiver of Memory and she
was
much like Jonas, always wanting
to
receive new memories and very
ent
husiastic about doing so. Until
The Giver showed her a
few memories
about terrible things,
after that,
Ros
emary couldn't take it. She went
to
The Committee of Elders, and had
ask
ed to be released(this made The
Com
mittee of Elders make a rule for
new
Receivers of Memory). When she
was
released and all her memories
were returned to the citizens, The

Giver didn't help them, because he

was so upset at himself.
Then Jonas learned
about the pain of
broken bones, which w
as real pain,
the k
ind that ev

he le

was b
ecause those

the Committee of Eld

about
hunge

overpopulation, and
why t

nity. La
ter he
asked The Giver

The G
iver told hi

unexpected.
Jonas then asked The Giver why they can't give the people some of the memories, The Giver told him he tried to think of something during all his years with all of the knowledge he had, but couldn't. Then, Jonas suggested that he and
The Giver come together and think
of a plan to change that, but The
Giver said that rule was made a
long time before both of their
times. That evening, Jonas and his
family were talking about how well
Gabriel was doing and that they all
hope he will not be released, Lily
wanted another newborn after Gabe
went away, but her father said no.
That night Gabe slept in Jonas' room, and when he wouldn't go to sleep, Jonas put his hands on Gabe's back, started thinking about the memory of the boat on calm ocean waves, and accidentally gave some of the memory to Gabe. He then quickly took his hands off of the now sleeping Gabe and wondered if he should confess to The Giver that he accidentally gave Gave some of the memory. He decided that he wouldn't tell.
The next day, The Giver didn't want to give any memories away, because he was in pain. When Jonas asked how he could help, and The Giver told him to lay down on the bed, he was given a memory of dehydration that led to death. When Jonas was done with the memory, he didn't want to be the Receiver of Memory anymore. He sat in his room afterward, but still went back every day to receive
memories. Once he asked which memory was the favorite of The Giver, in return, The Giver gave Jonas a memory of love, the one emotion Jonas had not experienced yet.
Then, Jonas knew why he must give
the citizens back all the memories,
so they could feel love and other
emotions. In turn, this gave The
Giver the idea to have Jonas travel
away from town and find Elsewhere.
Together, they came up with a plan
for Jonas to fake his death in the
river, get a bike and ride to
Elsewhere. When the time came(which
was at the yearly December ceremony),
Jonas took Gabe, his dad's bike, and
and headed for Elsewhere. When he got
to a small cottage, he heard music,
and knew that he was at where he
thought was Elsewhere.
