Transcript of HOW WAS EDUCATION IN THE 1960S DIFFERENT FROM NOW?

1960s:
School did not end until 5pm vs. modern day 3pm.

1960s:
Students strictly wore uniform.

1960s:
Schools were much more religious and based many of their teachings and lessons
on religion.
MAIN IDEA:
During the 1960s, segregation was definitely POWERFUL. The rules and values were far from our modern views and morals today. The 1960s time period and OUR generation is like night & day.
WHITE and COLORED students attended different schools due to their nationality.
HOW WAS EDUCATION IN THE 1960S
DIFFERENT
FROM
NOW
?

NOW:
Colleges are NOT racially
segregated. Everyone is
treated the same way,
no special treatment
and no prejudice ways.
:
NOW:
It is illegal for teachers to lay their hands on a student. Modern day teachers discipline kids by simply communicating verbally and giving out consequences.
*Colored students had
LESS success because
schools often favored
white races.
*Every race except for
white was negatively
viewed.

1960s:
White colleges were described as "excellent", while colored colleges were "failures".
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
In the generation of To Kill a Mockingbird, racism ruled society. People based their opinions and judgements on
the color of an individual's skin tone. My topic relates to this book considering it is in the 1960s also, which means the characters in the story had to experience the same treatment and follow the same laws at school. People placed ethnicity as the TOP PRIORITY, but in life, it is what's on the inside that matters the MOST.

Teachers during the 1960s use to discipline kids by PHYSICALLY hitting them.
Relationship between student and teacher was very respectful and uptight.
1960s was the
"GOLDEN ERA"

"THE GOLDEN AGE"

of American education

Schools taught exactly what they needed to succeed in life and
prepared them for
the real world.

.
1960s:
* Textbooks could NOT be used or
previously used by the opposite race.
{Ex: If a white person has
used a book, the next owner MUST
be the same race.}
NOW:
*It does not matter who has previously owned your book, everyone is treated
equally.
THEN
NOW
1960s:
The FIRST teacher allowed to teach pregnant was in the 1960s. Before then, teachers were NOT allowed to continue with teaching while pregnant.
