Stained Glass Windows
of the Middle Ages
Stained Glass windows created a powerful multimedia experience.
Imagine this:

Most of your days are spent working long hours in mills or farms on your Lord's manor. Living conditions are devastating as disease, war and poverty are an everyday reality. Then once a week you prepare to go into to town and visit the cathedral.

Upon walking in almost all of the senses are invoked:
Sound: choral singing, ringing of bells running deep through the halls of the cathedral
Smell: incense and candles burning, floral offerings
Taste: offerings that were provided during the mass
Sight: the ornate architecture of the cathedral; tall large columns, dark halls,
ILLUMINATED
by large, detailed stained glass windows bringing in light and casting its color across the floors.

The feeling they received was intense and can be compared to what in present day?

Aside from church or halls, where is a place you frequent on the weekends that invokes these senses?

How is it comparable in sound? smell? taste? and sight?
Stained glass windows replaced frescoes of earlier times.
12th century
14th century
Make colored glass.
Cut it to fit a pattern.
Join the pieces together with lead.
Fill in any gaps with clay (putty)
Brush with sawdust to remove excess clay (putty)

Stained Glass Windows
of the Middle Ages

In medieval times, great churches were constructed and adorned with all manner of artwork, all designed to honor biblical themes. During the construction of the churches and cathedrals, a new art form developed - the stained glass window.






A stained glass window is a bunch of different colored pieces of glass that actually made a picture. In medieval times, sometimes they were just large pieces of colored glass in pleasing geometric shapes. Mostly though, they were designed to show a scene from the Bible.



These beautiful windows provided light for the interior of the church, and were a way to educate and communicate those who were illiterate.

Variety-The use of different elements of art to create interest to a work of art.



Unity- Also known as harmony. quality of oneness or wholeness created when all parts of the art work together to unify.
PART 2

1. Attach the white paper you drew your image on to a piece of black construction paper.

2. Cut through both pieces of paper, removing anything left white on your drawing.

3. Remove the white frame. Decide which side will be the front and which side will be that back.

4. Pick up all the colors of tissue paper you will need. Flip your black frame to the back, lay the color of tissue paper you want in the space and trace over on the black lines.

5. Cut the piece of tissue paper and glue!
I will create a stained glass window like those seen in Medieval Art with an balance of Positive and Negative Space.

PART 1
1. In your sketchbook, draw 2 ideas:
-2 images with an EQUAL balance of positive and negative space. ALL LINES DRAWING MUST BE ABOUT 1 CM THICK!!!!!!
- Plan on what colors you will be using now; list them on your sketch.
SUGGESTIONS- use 3-4 colors for the background (negative space)

2.Choose 1 idea from your sketchbook.

3. On the blank paper Ms. Munguia gives you; Sketch a solid border at least 1 cm thick.
