Always refer to your degree plan when choosing a college level math. Discuss your degree plan with your advisor or counselor on a regular basis.




Colleges determine the options best for you by assessing a student’s skills in Math, Reading, and Writing.

Students will have several options to improve their skills: enroll in developmental education courses if applicable, the Academic Enrichment Program, tutoring etc.

You may be placed in a developmental course that is based on your scores and is appropriate for your skill level.

Re-testing may be required and you may retest at any time.

After testing, a “TSI Individual Success Plan” will be developed in collaboration with Your Academic Advisor or Counselor. There are multiple ways to be successful.

You are placed in the correct courses or other developmental options that will help you be successful.
This activity is also designed to ensure that students do not attempt the assessment without adequate preparation.

This pre-assessment activity is required by the State before testing.

On the day of your test, you will be asked several questions before being allowed to proceed. One of these questions will be for you to affirm that you have participated in this Pre-Assessment Activity.
Pre-Assessment Activity Overview
Were you provided with information and/or an activity to help you understand ALL of the following?
Texas Success Initiative
You will receive your test scores immediately after testing. The test results will include diagnostic information for the advisor about your skills in math, reading, or writing.

See an Academic Advisor or Counselor for appropriate course score interpretation and course placement. You are also required to visit them at least two times during the semester.

Re-testing may be required and you may retest at any time.

- Eliminate distractions.
- Breathe slowly and easily. Remember when stressed to breathe.

This test assesses your current skill level only, not your ability, your intelligence, or even your likelihood of doing well in college.

Plan on about 5 hours for the test
- May take breaks between test sections
- Test may be completed in more than one sitting
- Essay must be completed in one sitting

If you have a physical or learning disability and need testing accommodations, please meet with the DSS Office prior to testing.
Tips For Success
Know what to expect on the day of your test
You will be testing online in a lab with other students

Cell phones must be turned off

Paper and Pencil will be provided

Calculators are NOT allowed (it is possible that calculators may be allowed
or otherwise provided within the test when needed) A calculator is provided within the test where appropriate.

On the day of your test, you will be asked several background questions before being allowed to proceed. One of these questions will be "Were you provided a Pre-Assessment Activity?" and you can mark "yes" and proceed.
